I grew up on Long Island where late night diner culture is rampant. The diner depicted in this scene was spot on. You hear the clicking sound of dishes in the background. The entrance to the kitchen with customers sitting on the long table was so realistic.
Diner is a movie that gets it right. This is how guys and their buddies grow up. Talking BS in our favorite greasy spoon, getting mad over a sandwich and cruising the night away with the car top down. God, how I miss those days.
My sister couldn't understand why I love watching independent movies. This one, Pulp Fiction, Fargo, & Boogie Nights, they don't hold a candle sometimes to the big budget movies ot today. However, none of them could say they became big stars. They did a reunion with Daniel Stern, Kevin Bacon, Steve Guttenberg, and Tim Daly but not with Mickey Rourke. Paul Reiser also Co Wrote Michael McDonald's Biography.
The movie executive insist that Levinson cut this scene because he couldn't understand the point of it. Levinson said the sandwich scene IS the whole point of the movie.
@@jakeichord Yes! Also another Movie about Friendship was The Lords Of Flatbush from 1974 that Henry Winkler, Sylvester Stallone and Perry King would do before Happy Days, Rocky & Rambo as well as Miniseries like I'll Take Manhattan and The Last Convertible. Richard Gere got fired as Butchey and Henry Winkler replaced him and he went to the UK to play Danny Zuko in Grease in 1973. Olivia Newton-John saw it not knowing how much it would change her life. May she rest in peace.
They referenced this scene in Stranger Things when Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser) says he can't possibly eat his whole sandwich and tries to give some to Hopper. At the end of season two. It is CLEARLY a roast beef sandwich. I nearly fell off my chair with happiness.
I still see things I didn’t before which is what I love about this film - just now, I caught Kevin Bacon saying ‘I do’ off-camera and Stern gives him a look. Always missed that because of Guttenberg’s great rant.
According to a documentary on the film, Pauline Kael also gave a rave review at a time when MGM wasn't even sure they were going to release it and shamed them about this film they had collecting dust on their shelf.
The conversation about the sandwich - I had that same conversation a thousand times with my ex. She'd never ask or even admit she'd want what was on my plate, just pester me.
Then Eddie does exactly the same thing as Modell when he says he doesn't want the sandwich any more! Genius, I read somewhere a lot of it was improvised, just the guys hanging out in the diner. Movies have changed a lot. Idris Elba made a comment on his hot wings episode that movies have changed since reality tv took a lot of the people looking for emotional engagement with what we watch. "All is true", the Shakespeare movie was a standout.
I don't think we ever find out what Modell's first name is. He's just Modell. You can see he gets some kind of sadistic satisfaction out of agitating Eddie when he's eating, and you can see it works every time.
I don’t own any credit cards… so how do I watch a movie I’ve never seen but heard about for a third of my hard working life? But thanks for letting me see tiny snippets!
I think that one time or another we've been in situations where someone has "leeched" off of us and they don't think they are doing anything wrong. I once yelled at My Cousin or doing that going so far as to say "If you ain't got no money keep your broke @ss home!" She never did it with anyone else, just me, and I got very angry about it, and then I was made to feel that I was the bad guy. She was so bad at money management that's why she was always broke. Because I was so generous in the past, they were surprised that I said "No!" and not feel guilty. As for the Fries & Gravy it was a classic with the Old School Degrassi. When I read the book about Shane McKay's Character, he would play Basketball with Snake, Luke, & BLT. They would go for Fries & Gravy but they would never invite him.
That was actually Billy's (the guy back from college, played by Timothy Daly) threat to the annoying guy in the jail (where they all ended up after Fenwick ran amok in the creche). When I first saw this movie, that line had me laughing my ass off. You may be thinking of the scene where Boogie knocks down Tank, and Fenwick says, "smile of the week!" (or some such thing) At least I haven't seen this movie as many times as "Methan" saw "The Sweet Smell of Success." (I don't have every line memorized.)
I'm more a religious seducer...park on a lonely dirt road...Say Baby do you believe in the Hereafter ?? The hereafter ?? Yeah...if you ain't here after what I'm here after you'll be standing here after I'm gone.
By today's standards, Eddie would have said to Modell "Don't you have any Money to eat, and if you don't why do you go out, another thing too I am sick of you leeching off of me, enough is enough, you know I'm getting Married and I'm really going to have to watch The Dollars."
I started watching this movie last night and when I got to this scene it became clear to me that this whole film was going to be dull and uniformly unfunny. Maybe it's my millennial sensibility, but I can't understand why anyone would like this.
Erik Derek - Your "millennial sensibility"? You lack sensibility if you can't figure out why this is a funny movie. I suppose you don't hang out with friends and have goofy conversations and look for stuff to do because you're bored. This is what this movie is all about. Some people appreciate comedy that does not come out and beat you over the head (metaphorically speaking). You probably think the same way about The Big Lebowski, which is possibly the funniest movie ever made. Tell me you understand why people like The Big Lebowski, and I will be assured that there is still hope for you.
I grew up on Long Island where late night diner culture is rampant. The diner depicted in this scene was spot on. You hear the clicking sound of dishes in the background. The entrance to the kitchen with customers sitting on the long table was so realistic.
ketchup bottles turned end on end. guy eating sugar...smoking...
new jersey and upstate ny, I know the culture too
What struck me is the pointlessness of it all. Mindless patter, stupid pissing contests, basically a bunch of nonsense.
Such is life, bubba. Such is life.
I love this film so much, great writing, acting, soundtrack; it has it all.
Diner is a movie that gets it right. This is how guys and their buddies grow up. Talking BS in our favorite greasy spoon, getting mad over a sandwich and cruising the night away with the car top down. God, how I miss those days.
you know that and i know that. it's lost on many people.
This should be set in a pub, saloon, or bar.
The movie was the most underrated movie of it's time ! It's pure genius ! Epic cast ! Seriously not too many movies had this caliber of actors in it.
My sister couldn't understand why I love watching independent movies. This one, Pulp Fiction, Fargo, & Boogie Nights, they don't hold a candle sometimes to the big budget movies ot today. There is no more late night diner culture since they close at 10 now

The bouquet tells all.

Every time I see this scene in the movie, I have to pause it cuz I'm laughing too hard.

Possibly the real origin of Seinfeld (the series). A show about nothing.
I dated a man who revealed he hated this movie...I dumped him.
A wise decision. I cannot fathom how anyone can hate this movie.
Ingrid............. I love this movie.
I completely understand why. For some men it's not easy to have a mirror show them how silly their behavior can really be.
I didn’t understand it. It was just dudes bickering the whole time.
My in-laws grew up in this world. Forest Park. Great great stories. Great people. Baltimore’s best.
If you wanted to know where Seinfeld came from... you just found it.
Swingers has some of that feel too.
or clerks or reservoir dogs
Yes, has this Jewish humor. Paul Reiser and Steve Gutenberg are Jewish as is the director Barry Levinson
It's just New York Jewish humor. When Harry Met Sally also has the same style.
This is nothing like Seinfeld
Watched this for the first time last nite, it was absolutely fantastic.
Underrated film, probably the best film of the year,
No way in hell is this a better movie than Blade Runner, First Blood, or Conan the Barbarian.
1982 was great year in film.
One cannot truly call oneself a man until he has seen Diner and can appreciate all its greatness.
I watch it almost every year around Xmas time. It's a x-mas movie, you know.
@@jakeichord Never thought of it. Hey, if Die Hard is a Christmas movie, then so is Diner.

YES! YES! YES! Thanks for posting this. My wife had no idea why I got so happy while watching that ST scene. It simply HAS to be a Diner reference...
Well, I mean, who wants a 40-year old sandwich?
This scene is perfect.
Agreed.
Nobody messes with a man's roast beef sandwich. Also adore that line "Fuck or fight." One of my favorite films right here.

Siskel and Ebert more or less saved this great movie from obscurity.
According to a documentary on the film, Pauline Kael also gave a rave review at a time when MGM wasn't even sure they were going to release it and shamed them about this film they had collecting dust on their shelf.
Some people don't know a great thing when they have it.
It didn't really get a lot of publicity (no marquee names at that point) but it got GREAT word of mouth
Guttenberg grew up on Long Island, so he knew diner talk.
you have roast beef in your heart
Yeah, and remember how Double J in Saturday Night Fever teased Tony for liking White Castle Burgers.
He was only criticizing him about how he ate.
And what's wrong with that?
I sure could go for a roast beef sandwich, along with fries and gravy, and a cherry coke 😋
Popcorn scene rocks!
Great Flick Love the Diner scenes! ...Tinmen is good too another Barry Levinson offering
love tinmen
Tin Men makes an awesome second movie in the Baltimore trilogy. Lots of great conversations in that one, too.
"She'll BE twelve..." perfect throwaway line
