I think the original bad boy was Rick James. The New Edition boys toured with him and hung out with him at his house when they were young. They probably picked up some (bad) habits from Slick Rick, lol. Bobby definitely did.
Bobby was a trained singer dancer and musician. He was trained to sing and dance live without going out of breath. He was TALENTED. He grew up near me (New Edition and New Kids) and his music is beloved.
Bobby was no joke in the late 80s! He basically was one of the rulers of R&B back then with his album "Don't Be Cruel". He had 5 top 10 singles from that album alone and it went 7x Platinum. Every Little Step went #1. You should listen to "My Prerogative" next! Whitney often called him "The Original R&B King".
Back in the day I played Bobby's cassette to death. Great album not one filler crappy song on his first album. Definitely didn't have to press skip to another song.
I want him to react to My Prerogative too! I’ve checked since, & idk 😐 if he ever did. It doesn’t seem like any reactors ever do that one. And it’s the best I think. ✌🏻
You definitely have too listen to "Don't be cruel" and you have to listen to New Edition with Bobby after Bobby and when Bobby returned. And Bell Biv Devoe (BBD) Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant all members of New Edition when they did all there solo work.
@21stcenturyenigma it was sti called the "gumby" because it looked like the character gumby. Idk who invented it, only what it was called. It was also called a high right, low left
You’re right bro. Bobby Brown and New Edition’s work in the late 80’s was ahead of it’s time cause that sound that they pioneered became seems everywhere in the 90’s and to this day. Bobby Brown is first all around entertainer for a modern Black Male artist. Bobby was the change from Black RNB artists with the style of Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, and Lionel Richie to what we know as Black RNB artists now. Bobby is the reason we have people like R Kelly, Usher, etc.
Before Chris Brown and Usher there was Bobby Brown, him and M.C Hammer was some dancing asses back in the 90’s. One of the best dancers in his hey day?
This is classic Bobby Brown this song is from his 2nd solo album “Don’t Be Cruel” that album solidified Bobby as one of the greatest entertainer of that era. Other hits of his you should check out is “My Prerogative” “Roni” “Don’t Be Cruel” “Rock Wit’cha” “On Our Own” “Something In Common” & New Edition hits. Fun Fact that hairstyle is called the gumby after the main character of a kids show named “Gumby” his hair is cut like the head of Gumby
Bobby Brown is one of the most natural God gifted entertainers in music history. King of RNB in terms of talent and ability by far. The only hesitation behind that title that people would have is his lack of longevity in terms of success but even as his career is, people always have him in the conversation cause they know he was the real deal, same with Tupac. As is the case with all the true greats and all the pioneers, being in the situation he was in as the first in that time, he was unable to solidify his superiority. But as is the case with the best pioneers, the fruits of Bobby’s labor allowed artists like Kelly, Usher, etc to have lengthy success.
Don't feel bad for not being able to keep up with Bobby's dancing, Jack, hardly anyone could back then lol. He was a ball of energy. Great entertainer! L.A. Reid & Babyface on production...Hit making machines! Check out Own Our Own, Rock Rit'cha. Also, I would LOVE for you to check out the group After 7 and their song Ready or Not. Classic!
Bobby Brown is one of the members of the legendary group New Edition. They started singing as kids and have hits after hits. Also the members did have successful solo careers with 3 of them forming another grp (BelBivDevo)...please react to New Edition, you could start from when they were kids, just any song cuz they have HUGE catalogue. K thanks😊
You should also check out the group Bobby was in prior to going solo called New Edition. They have hits upon hits too and were one of the main R&B groups of the era. Songs to check out from them are If It Isn’t Love, Mr. Telephone Man, Can You Stand The Rain, Candy Girl, Cool It Now, You Don’t Have To Worry, and Hot Tonite
Bobby was the first one ever to sing and rap in a song. The hair cut happened by accident and became a trend. Watch the Bobby Brown movie it's a must see.
Bobby Brown was definitely one of the 1st artists to sing and rap. I know you said you wanted to hear some of his ballads check out "Girlfriend", "Rock Wit'cha" and "Roni". Thanks for doing this video...just took me waaaaayyyy back!
After 1 day of discovering this channel, you have quickly become one of my favorite reactors on UA-cam. Definitely strongly considering supporting the patreon. After 1 day. Well done my guy!💯
@2:08 - His dancers were called Heart & Soul. Bobby used to win dance battles in Boston (almost got shot for dancing too good with another dude's girl at a house party!). Bobby's performance of "My Prerogative" in the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards is what caught Whitney's eye...and she pursued him until she caught him! @2:31 - L.A. Reid (Babyface's former business and music partner) wrote this song about Pebbles (his future wife and ex-wife). You've reacted to Pebbles before. @3:35 - It was called "The Gumby." His barber accidentally shaved off too much while trying to maintain his flat top...and they made it work. It turned into a very popular hairstyle! So much that Christopher Williams said that his stylists tried to make his hair like that (but it didn't work!) in the "Talk to Myself" video (which he admits is a straight rip-off of Bobby's "My Prerogative"). The Boys ("Dial My Heart") parodied this video in their "Crazy" video. @4:15 - Hear more of Bobby's rappin on the hit "On Our Own (Ghostbuster's Theme)." @5:46 - He had extra chemical help for his energy!
Bobby Brown helped to usher a new sound to the industry- new jack swing. He was also the precursor for folks like Usher, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, etc. He had the best selling album for 1989 and all major pop stars of that time started to experiment with the genre he helped to establish- Michael Jackson, Whitney, Celine, Mariah, etc. Quite an influential guy who lost his way but glad to still have him here.
Bobby is one of the members of New Edition... Which I really hope you know who New Edition is because they are legendary! By this point, he had left the group and went solo (which this is one of his biggest hits as a solo performer). Eventually, he did get caught in his wife's shadow because of her success in the 90s and 2000s. His hairstyle was called a Gumby. From what I heard, it was supposed to be a flat top, but the barber accidentally cut one side of it off... So this hairstyle was technically an accident! But he still rocked it and made it his own.
This video was ALL that and THEN SOME! Bobby totally kicked major ass! I remember they use to compare him and MC Hammer all the time where dancing was concerned on who was the better dancer.
Bobby Brown , was no joke he was very talented during his early career he could sing and one hella dancer . People back then knew he could bring the noise .
I absolutely Love you Jack! Your reactions are pure, carefully thought out and articulate to the deeper meaning of the Music! Got a new subscriber! Thank you for appreciating and indulging in the Music xo
James brown, Bobby brown, Chris brown, wild but talented in their day. Bobby brown brought the bad boy image and pure swag during the 80s era. "good enough" to me was 1 of his best songs after the dont be cruel album and "girlfriend" was a hidden gem.
New Edition rapped and sang... just a continuation of that, Bobby and Ralph could and BBD... Candy girl has them rapping and singing in 1982. Same with Cool It Now in 1984. In Blondie, Debbie Harry sang and rapped on Rapture recorded in 1980.
He had a video tape called bobby brown his prerogative where you can watch the videos and his interview about making the don't be cruel album i wore that tape out as a kid
Actually the group he started with New Edition started rapping in the song. They should be in someones music hall of fame!!!! All members were successful in their own projects. Whitney said Bobby is the king of R&B!!! She maybe right..
You should react to New Editon: CAN YOU STAND THE RAIN. It's a slower bop. New Edition is the group that Bobby Brown was in. Also "slant top" had me rolling lol.
New Jack Swing music at its finest!!! I easily place this on my top five favorite New Jack Swing songs of all time list. and the producers of this song are L.A. Reid and Babyface. Babyface went on to have incredible success as a solo artist. he has a list of iconic hits of his own. Legend.
Now u see why we say music ain't music no more. Can't help but to LOVE this. Definitely one of my all-time favorite Bobby Brown songs. "Roni" is my #1 though.
The album came out in 88 I think - but this was released in 89; you should check out New Edition - the group he left to go solo; oh and biker shorts were popular in the late 80s lol
There are very few albums to me that are perfect to me his debut Don't Be Cruel is just that. When this came out he was running R&B. You should react to the whole album. The best tracks to me are the title track Don't Be Cruel, My Prerogative, Rock Wit Cha, Roni, I'll Be Good to You.
Jack, 2 things... 1) Bobby is not the first to rap and sing. Well, maybe the first to do so on the same song, but the very first rap group ever "Sugar Hill Gang" rapped and sang songs on the same album and talk about 🔥🔥🔥🔥 OMG! 2) I bet you CAN dance. It might just depend on who's looking & enjoying you. I danced with a guy at a club way back in the 80s and he barely moved his feet but his upper body was smooth as silk - just like YOU move & feel the music in your soul. All this time I never forgot that ONE dance. Cool as f#@& !! You got it, Jack.
I love this song so much because of the New Jack Swing beat. He's one of my favorite singers (not in terms of voice but the tracks that he chooses to sing).
Legend has it, the Gumby haircut was a hi-top fade mistake by his barber and he just went with it. I think he was responsible for the (thankfully brief) look. Both Bobby, as well Johnny Gill had albums that were co-produced by Jimmy Jam & Lewis as well as L.A. Ried & Babyface.
Yeaaa...the original King of R&B...MJ is my favorite artist of all time, and one of the best dancers of all time, but i learned how to dance from Bobby...he can pop lock too...
Bobby was a fabulous dancer He danced to Whitney's tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. (Mr. Bojangles). They both were incredible. That's a high/low hairstyle LOL
Don't forget the greatest group of all time that Bobby brown was a member of the group new edition. Some songs to check out is telephone man, candygirl, Can you stand the rain, not my type of girl, boys to man song too, NE heartbreak

My Perogative that video everyone on stage was jammin!!! And of course he started with New Edition check their songs out. And Bel Biv Devoe's Poison, BBD were once part of New Edition. THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!
The first verse was song by Ralph, the lead singer of new edition. Ralph also sang the chorus and background. Most likely the song was supposed to be a new edition single. Then Bobby went solo
I like him. Omg his dance moves. In this one is so epic. Such fun moves. I remember watching the Wayans bros and Marlon had those headphones like Bobby brown and he did those moves. Hahaa I thought it was funny. Cuz he was trying to dance like BB. LMAO
Lol! Bobby was IT back then! The Don’t Be Cruel album was amazing and the biggest-selling album of 1989. It’s defining for the New Jack Swing era (that style of R&B from Teddy Riley). Roni is my fav. Don’t Be Cruel, My Prerogative, Rock Wit’cha, etc.
Bobby Brown started out with the group New Edition. He left and went solo and put out a small hit called Girlfriend. But his 2nd album is when he really took of with hits like My Prerogative, Don't Be Cruel, and the popular ladies slow jam Tender Roni. But the first artist I can remember rapping and singing was Biz Markie- Just A Friend but it was more comical.
Babyface and LA Reid were the masterminds behind the production of this song, they're geniuses! Also you should react to some other tracks from Don't be cruel, My Prerogative is arguably his most well known track of his career.
People seems forget or don't know that L.A. Reid did most of the production/beats, Babyface wrote most of the songs. This is the one song that LA Reid wrote when he fell in love with Pebbles known for her song "Girlfriend" that L.A. & Babyface created. That song was first giving to Vanessa Williams and Babyface took it back and gave it to Pebbles. I grew up in the 80's and I read everything I could find back then, articles, interviews and credits. I have every song that they wrote and produced. That list is long.
@@Gotee71 oh my god youre right!!!! lemme edit the comment because i completely forgot la reid co wrote and co produced this track with babyface. thank you for bringing it to my attention

I like him. Omg his dance moves. In this one is so epic. Such fun moves.
I remember watching the Wayans bros and Marlon had those headphones like Bobby brown and he did those moves. Hahaa I thought it was funny. Cuz he was trying to dance like BB. LMAO
You have to watch the New Edition and Bobby Brown movies...the actors are really singing and sound just like them
This is my favorite Bobby Brown song.
