    A masterclass in open communication. The willingness of the hosts to understand, and the willingness of Dr. Becky to slow down and explain the very basics of her field. Love it.

      @@donaldhelms2731 I think the host is doing even better here. Most specialists can slow down like that. But far too many "Joe Averages" get defensive, into denial or start making fun of what they don't understand. Giving the person who has *studied* her field the benefit of the doubt has become a rare thing, especially on the internet.

    One misconception that could be cleaned up is that it is not true that in general Christians believe the universe is only a thousands of years old. In fact the original version of the big bang theory was proposed by a Roman Catholic priest. "This startling idea first appeared in scientific form in 1931, in a paper by Georges Lemaître, a Belgian cosmologist and Catholic priest." Frankly I am surprised that Dr. Becky did not know that.

    I have known about the concept that traveling fast makes time pass slower for you. But what frame of reference is it based on? If I am traveling past earth, from my perspective, earth is moving the other direction. The earth is not stationary, it's orbiting the sun and the whole solar system is orbiting the center of the milky way. And the milky way is moving relative to the other galaxies in the universe.. But then when I travel fast, how is that different? What is the overall frame of reference that determines how fast time passes for each observer?

    • @tonyfromaus7855
      @tonyfromaus7855 3 місяці тому +1

      I am not an expert but as I understand it there is no such thing as an overall frame of reference. Hence the word “relative”. Everything is in its own inertial frame of reference and so we can only compare two things in their relative motion. Time is slowed by speed and by gravity. To have a big effect it’s got to be a significant percentage of the speed of light. The motion of the earth sun and galaxy is nowhere near the speed she was referring to…. Needs to be say 1 or 2 percent of light speed.
      So the earth the rocket leaves behind does not experience the acceleration that the traveller does. They are therefore not the same. So the accelerated pilot is the one that experiences the slower time. Even though to her it looks like the earth accelerated away, so she might expect earth to experience the slowing of time. But earth did not accelerate…. it did not experience the higher relative velocity and hence the slower time passing.

    • @therealpbristow
      @therealpbristow 3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, the standard explanation of relativistic time dilation really oversimplifies what's going on and leads to apparent contradictions like this. And it's so long since I last looked at the proper analysis of the "twin paradox" that I'm not gonna risk botching the explanation here. And it really doesn't help that people keep mixing it up with *gravitational* time dilation, which is completely separate, and is what's shown in "Interstellar".

    If I had an ounce of the charisma these two have, I would start a podcast hoping to someday have such a guest.
    You guys should look into convincing Neil deGrasse Tyson to come chat! Or maybe both at the same time, having them play off each other. However, you might have to reign in some of Neil's energy... Their energy levels are far different, but I love them both!
    Anyways, great chat! Will be watching more, now that I know of you!

    I see a lot of people who have no real grasp of science confronting people who have made science their life's work, assuming that the notion of science they just got 15 seconds ago is not only equal to the scientist's understanding, but might even be better.
    I wish that there was so much more of what is happening here, where the guys openly admit their scientific understanding is not great, but are willing to listen to the expert, acknowledging that her understanding is a great deal higher than theirs.
    It is about refusing to allow ego to get in the way of learning.

    Can someone give me the timestamp of where she talks about going to mars?
    I can think of many ways I agree.. but am still a big space settlement enthusiast.
    Might be here: 48:25

    Einstein's theory was that time would "seem" or "appear" to move slower, i.e relative to you, but that assumes the traveler is looking at some clock which as you speed away, the photons would take longer to arrive to your eyes. However, if you have a watch on your hand, it would tick at the same speed as another watch on earth. Basically, it's a visual illusion of time dilation. Somehow, we are confusing that to mean that time is therefore going slower. Its all about temporal perspective and light speed illusion. The argument for atomic clocks in space vs earth is also flawed as gravity affects atoms and subatomic elements differently based on proximity to earth's core versus in orbit. Just in case someone wants to bring that into the convo.

    Love this interview. You guys are clearly wowed by the amazing Dr Becky, and at the same time she’s clearly enjoying the irreverence and playful mood. Fair play Joe - breaks the mould this. Buy yourself a telescope and you’ll never look back!
