As a Kurd that’s been living in the US and has been searching for information about my ancestors and their religions; I don’t really know who/what sources to trust to get information. Ever since I was little my mother would tell me how we come from the sun and we follow Zardasht. This video was super helpful. Thank you!

I'm a Zoroastrian living in India. This was a very well explained video. The symbol of Zoroastrian's is called "Asho- Farover". Also there are barely 80,000 odd Zoroastrian's world-wide.Was also interesting to know it's influences on Islam and Christianity.
There is also a story of how Alexander too led to the downfall of the Persian empire under King Darius the great. For the world he is Alexander the great, but to Zoroastrian's he is Alexander the Accursed (guzastag), an epithet he shares with the devil Ahriman alone. As the story goes, Alexander's soldiers plundered temples and sanctuaries, destroyed religious texts and massacred priests and burned the city to the ground in a drunken orgy at the end of his four-month stay in the city of Persipolis. He apparently threw the first torch himself, then had second thoughts but it was too late. And when it got too hot inside, the party drunkenly tripped outside to watch the spectacle of Persipolis going up in flames. Legend also has it that Alexander wept when he realised what he had done. Still in a sense, the Persians had the last laugh as when he mounted the persian throne in Susa, he found he was too short and his feet would not touch the ground. It is said that he married a Persian as did 80 of his men (by force). He adopted Persian royal colours and robes and included all Persian ceremonial and their customs of homage. However, by the time he died at 32 yrs, Persia had completely conquered him much to the dismay of his fellow Greeks and Macedonians.

The reason why Iran is called Iran is because it was always called Iran since the beggining of its existence. Since Iran means " Land of Aryans", Iran has : Persians, Turks, Lors etc. So if Iran was called Persian the other races would have no place in the country. Persians, Turks Lors collectively that live in Iran are called Iranians but Persians are all over the world if you have no information on the topic please stop spreading nonsence.

According to official reports, about 30,000 zoroastrians (btw it's called 'zartoshti / زرتشتی' in Persian) are living in Iran. It's slightly more than number of zoroastrians living in the US. I find it worth mentioning cause the video kind of implies that there aren't any notable zoroastrians communities left in Iran.
Additionally they have a fixed parliament seat dedicated to them in national parliament.

    • @TheZareer
      @TheZareer 6 років тому +8

Hesam Khaki nobody cares about them in Iran truth be told..and they deserve every bit of care in Iran cause most of the population in Iran isn’t Islamic But Zoroastrian by blood..but I’m happy that the Shias in Iran and even the kurds are coming to their senses and are converting back to their original religion and culture I.e Zoroastrianism.I hope more people in Iran wish to open their minds and seek the truth, the actual truth and find the connection between themselves and their original faith, the actual religion of peace which was overthrown by Islam.

I've tried to read the Avesta a couple of times and just found the terms too hard to follow. If anyone knows of a great English translation... with maybe some commentary, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you to the professional teams at Khan Academy. I have been seeing many introductory videos about Zoroastrianism and this exceeds many of them. If I may suggest an opinion: there can be another video elaborating on some more points. I understand the need to balance length of video and information provided, a second video might be helpful to guide inquisitive minds to learn more accurately about Zoroastrianism.
Yes it is personal too (as I am Zoroastrian), but mostly intellectual for me.

Yes, we have fire temples, places of worship where should be an eternal flame burning. However, sadly in my city (Prague), there is no fire temple, nor any zoroastrian meetings. I have persian ancestors; my mother's last name even used to be "Cyrus" so I am a zoroastrian only in my soul, since I am not a part of any group of practicing zoroastrians. I am kinda alone in my city, but from time to time I make a campfire in a forest close-by and make my own little fire temple there :) I am lucky that Yasna (one of the oldest parts of Avesta) is translated to my language, but I was searching for that translation for a long long time.

The zoroastrian holy book "Avesta" also called Zend-avesta, contains its cosmogony, law, and liturgy, the teachings of the prophet Zoroaster(Zarathushtra). The extant Avesta is all that remains of a much larger body of scripture, apparently Zoroaster’s transformation of a very ancient tradition. The voluminous manuscripts of the original are said to have been destroyed when Alexander the Great conquered Persia. The present Avesta was assembled from remnants and standardized under the Sāsānian kings. So very less is known about our culture.

Does Gayomard and the Bull have anything to do with Hurrian/ Hittite, Minoan Crete bull jumping?
Start of emanations and angels the Yazata.
You talk of influence on Islam you could have mentioned Salman Al-Farsi. Salman Al-Farsi a member of the prophets household. A Magi who set out to find something new in the death throes of Zoroastrianism. Instrumental in the Battle of the Trench. Salman or Solomon connotative of Magic- Western tradition.

You know how Achaemenid heir apparent would govern over Bactria of Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex. Bactria would be modern day Balkh Afghanistan, the source of the ancient world's lapis lazuli.
Bactria-Balkh would be located pretty close to Harappan, Mohenjo Daro Dorian culture. Though I don't see a major breakout into Dorian culture til Alexander and Greco-Bactrian culture.

Learning about the influences that the older religions had on the newer ones actually made me lose my faith in a god. Just like in music, fashion, engineering, etc. it all takes from previous.

I think Vedic age may have been far more older than Zoroastrian. Modern research with the help of satellite imagery and genetic analysis is turning the widely held beliefs upside down, it would be an interesting topic for discussion if you refer to modern research and suggest. Cheers.

After first reading about Zoroastrianism recently, one of the first things that struck me was indeed the "Three Wise Men" that visited the family of Christ and how they were described as magi. It dawned on me that it was a Zoroastrian term, on top of the fact that they were riding on camels, which were common mounts in ancient Persia if I'm not mistaken. Were they Zoroastrian elders? According to this, my revelation was correct. I also thought about what they brought, the frankincense and mir, and whether they were magical components or something. No idea.
It was almost like a symbolic passing of the torch.

Ankhenaten brought forth the first known monotheistic religion, in the 24th century BCE... With God being, Aten - represented by the sun disk. From there, monotheism spread into Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The older religions such as found in Babylon or Sumerian texts, were all polytheistic. 🙌

well my theory goes like asura was a term for humans, or something which portray humans, their gods which of cource ruled over humans were also asuras, now I think these terms were from a time when sumerians and assyrians were the popular kingdoms, the sumerians were just banished people from the akkadians govt, sumerians looked black(dark skin colour) and to distinguish themselves from their adversary the akkadians made some changes in their names, now they named themselves dev-asura, the changed asuras, and that, asuras are those who are ignorent implying the akkadians for their unruly behavior towards them. Now the thing is if you bear with me. I think the sumerians were the ones that led on to create the Indus valley civilization when pushed and pressured to leave their land in sumer, they then went on to make indra, Shiva and other gods we know of. Now the akkadians were the adversary , now both these groups were actually the follower of the same faith, but made some changes in names, later on one such king named Zoroaster(possibly a descendent of akkadians, possibly a king that made such impact) made his own religion which we now know as Zoroastrianism and the now pushed sumerians which were in the Indian subcontinent were living their life peacefully. Now with the passage of time. The newer generation of white males pushed these somewhat docile sumerians into the south of persent day india and is what we know them of as dravidians, the new white people now came to India and made themselves the authority over other people and what greater an authority is greater than the authority of the religion, so they (Aryan invasion) moved into India, collected the knowledge of the sumerians and classified their gods as the prime gods - vishnu and brahma and wrote down the collective knowledge they now posesses(Vedas and upnishads) and indicated that the gods that you(dravidians) follow like ram, krishna and other notable/popular/respected people were just reincarnations of our God(vishnu) to know superiority, so now accept this caste system we present you and be with it. And the rest of India kinda accepted it.
You might realise that there is no proper hierarchy in Hinduism. Their is somewhat ambiguous roles of bhrama and vishnu and most of the importance however given to shiva but equivalent place is given to vishnu without much involvement in any of the stories expect for claiming the glory and indra the true king of heaven is not revered as much. I don't know I can be utterly wrong at many places entirely wrong on the whole concept. It's something that just came up to my mind that's it. I am open to positive discussion though.

Yeah, but he skips over that the Pharisee Jews accepted angels and all those other ideas from the Persians and brought the ideas to Jerusalem and other places. Then, later, the Gnostics and Christians inherited those ideas from the Jews. I think the Sadducees refused to believe in the Persian ideas, but modern Kabbalah has the Persian ideas.
