As a Kurd that’s been living in the US and has been searching for information about my ancestors and their religions; I don’t really know who/what sources to trust to get information. Ever since I was little my mother would tell me how we come from the sun and we follow Zardasht. This video was super helpful. Thank you!

As a Kurd, same. Good thoughts, Good deeds, Good words 🙏🏻
I'm a Zoroastrian living in India. This was a very well explained video. The symbol of Zoroastrian's is called "Asho- Farover". Also there are barely 80,000 odd Zoroastrian's world-wide.Was also interesting to know it's influences on Islam and Christianity.
There is also a story of how Alexander too led to the downfall of the Persian empire under King Darius the great. For the world he is Alexander the great, but to Zoroastrian's he is Alexander the Accursed (guzastag), an epithet he shares with the devil Ahriman alone. As the story goes, Alexander's soldiers plundered temples and sanctuaries, destroyed religious texts and massacred priests and burned the city to the ground in a drunken orgy at the end of his four-month stay in the city of Persipolis. He apparently threw the first torch himself, then had second thoughts but it was too late. And when it got too hot inside, the party drunkenly tripped outside to watch the spectacle of Persipolis going up in flames. Legend also has it that Alexander wept when he realised what he had done. Still in a sense, the Persians had the last laugh as when he mounted the persian throne in Susa, he found he was too short and his feet would not touch the ground. It is said that he married a Persian as did 80 of his men (by force). He adopted Persian royal colours and robes and included all Persian ceremonial and their customs of homage. However, by the time he died at 32 yrs, Persia had completely conquered him much to the dismay of his fellow Greeks and Macedonians.
CoD RocKz # Wild gaming I married a Muslim. My maiden surname was Balaporia 😊
Kamalrukh Khan- With all do respect at this time about $200,000 Zoroastrians live in Iran.
@@Salman-td5mq no. I'm not Muslim. I'm zoroastrian. So very different in all aspects.

Aye I'm Persian I apricate this lesson you pretty much covered everything.
Persians don't exist anymore. You certainly meant to say you were Iranian.
DeJulius Caesar Some people actually don't want to be associated with current government so they call themselfs Persian instead of Iranian.
The reason why Iran is called Iran is because it was always called Iran since the beggining of its existence. Since Iran means " Land of Aryans", Iran has : Persians, Turks, Lors etc. So if Iran was called Persian the other races would have no place in the country. Persians, Turks Lors collectively that live in Iran are called Iranians but Persians are all over the world if you have no information on the topic please stop spreading nonsence.
DeJulius Caesar no, I didn't, the current rulers are terrible so I'm not Iranian, I'm Persian.
Ata ahmadi-yazdi Iranians do not include turks. People of Azerbaijan are Persian whose language turned to turkish by force
Freddie Mercury was raised a practicing Zoroastrian when he was young!
Yes, he was a Parsi. Parsis are a group of Zoroastrians who came to India sometime after the fall of the Sassanid empire. They are currently the largest group of Zoroastrians in the world. Freddie Mercury was raised in Mumbai (keep in mind Freddie mercury wasn't his original name, nor was he white like most people thought he was).
Yes. His birth name was Farrokh Bulsara.
Never knew that, what a fun fact!
huge Freddie mercury fan was blessed to hear him sing live in Pittsburgh 1978 I was in the fourth row about 30 ft from his side of stage

According to official reports, about 30,000 zoroastrians (btw it's called 'zartoshti / زرتشتی' in Persian) are living in Iran. It's slightly more than number of zoroastrians living in the US. I find it worth mentioning cause the video kind of implies that there aren't any notable zoroastrians communities left in Iran.
Additionally they have a fixed parliament seat dedicated to them in national parliament.
Hesam Khaki nobody cares about them in Iran truth be told..and they deserve every bit of care in Iran cause most of the population in Iran isn’t Islamic But Zoroastrian by blood..but I’m happy that the Shias in Iran and even the kurds are coming to their senses and are converting back to their original religion and culture I.e Zoroastrianism.I hope more people in Iran wish to open their minds and seek the truth, the actual truth and find the connection between themselves and their original faith, the actual religion of peace which was overthrown by Islam.
I would chill with dogmatic speak there. "True" this and "actual religion" that isn't the reason why people convert back to Zoroastrianism. Talking like a zealot isn't very inviting.
Zareer Cobla amen,
@@MatsueMusic lol 4 years late, but he is actually not being a zealot. Since Zoroastrianism was traditionally hereditary only, one could argue that the persians of today are in fact Zoroastrian by default regardless of their own personal beliefs and current religion.
Iranian are zartoshti in their hearts.
I'm zoroastrianism, thank you for video

You summed this up really really well. I've been curious about this religion for a long time and you gave a great high-level summary. I've tried to read the Avesta a couple of times and just found the terms too hard to follow. If anyone knows of a great English translation... with maybe some commentary, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you to the professional teams at Khan Academy. I have been seeing many introductory videos about Zoroastrianism and this exceeds many of them. If I may suggest an opinion: there can be another video elaborating on some more points. I understand the need to balance length of video and information provided, a second video might be helpful to guide inquisitive minds to learn more accurately about Zoroastrianism.
Yes it is personal too (as I am Zoroastrian), but mostly intellectual for me.
Hi!
Can we link?
I think there's a high chance we could benefit each other. Perhaps initially you will be adding new information for me than the other way around.
Let me know please. If yes do tell what's the mean you're comfortable with and I'll respond with my user tag.
I'm not a believer in any religion, but I like the philosophy of the Zoroastrian culture. I feel like I could talk for hours to a practitioner of Zoroastrian.
Thank you 😊
This was a great, short and clear explanation! Thank you so much!

Cyrus the Great was later on. I am Zoroastrian. Perhaps one of the few.
yey let's say I am one of the few as well :)
Matěj Jureček Can you tell about your faith?
German Eagle Well I am zoroastrian 😊 you want mě to elaborate on that? 😄
Matěj Jureček Idk, do you have chruches or something like that?
And in what country are you?
Yes, we have fire temples, places of worship where should be an eternal flame burning. However, sadly in my city (Prague), there is no fire temple, nor any zoroastrian meetings. I have persian ancestors; my mother's last name even used to be "Cyrus" so I am a zoroastrian only in my soul, since I am not a part of any group of practicing zoroastrians. I am kinda alone in my city, but from time to time I make a campfire in a forest close-by and make my own little fire temple there :) I am lucky that Yasna (one of the oldest parts of Avesta) is translated to my language, but I was searching for that translation for a long long time.
Zoroastrianism isn’t only relating to Iranian people but Afghan and tajiks as well. People forget that there’s persians in Afghanistan and Tajikistan
the word mystery, mistry, mystic, mysterious, mystical, majestical, magical, magic all come from or driven by the word *Magi* which it means school master or the teacher of mystical knowledge and used by Zarathushtra for the first time in his Gathas(the only original book of him). Later on Zoroastian Priest called Magi as well as Mogh. Pir e Moghan in Hafez poetry is referring to the Zarathushtra’s himself. Thank you so much for this good video you created✨🙏✨
Great lesson! Wish it was longer and more in depth.
great video!!!
Thanks for helping me on my homework:)
Persian brothers are always welcome in our hearts.❣
They are very peaceful people.
Such a cool and mysterious religion. Thanks for this one sal
Unfortunately, since our holy book "avesta" is written in such an old language, it's still not understood by todays scholars... hopefully they make a break thru .. then you learn more about us 😊😊
Well explained. You stated the facts correctly. Thank you

Fun fact, Mazda Motors was named after Ahura Mazda !
good lecture, you can easily see how modern creationism, (islam, christianity, and judaism) all evolved from an amalgam of pagan polytheism, (rising from the dead, birthed from a virgin, etc.) and the innovations of zoroastrianism (one god, duality of good an evil).
Your the best at ICT
Humata, Hukhta, Hvarshta
Sumata, Sūkta, Sucarita are it's sanskrit equivalent
From my reading Cyrus was not Zoroastrian but highly tolerant of other religions. It was Darius who came after Cyrus's sons that made it a state religion and invoked Ahura Mazda in many of his carvings
Zarathustra was much earlier than 1500 BCE. Some Ancient greek thinkers have said things to put him near 6000 BCE which would explain his connection with Vedic teachings. Being that he coincided most probably with the first Indo-European culture also linking to Gobekli Teppe. I know you cant teach theories but wish you might have said “some say... “
About the Farvahar, I have heard that the circular shape in the center represents the consequences of your actions, if you do a bad action, you will receive problems indirectly, but if you do good actions, good things will happen to you in return.
Aren't you a neo-majoosi?
Nope. The ring in the center symbolizes the eternity of universe or the eternal nature of the soul. As a circle, it has no beginning and no end.
Hey khan can you please make a video on Dhul-Qarnayn (some say he was Cyrus the great) and since you have great knowledge on these Empires and timeline of religions it can really be helpful!
Dhul-Quarnayn also has reference to Alexander III too... however alot of the scholars today do not agree with it...
Kamalrukh Khan Alexander doesn’t pass to be dhul qarnayn because he was a pagan! But it would be nice if someone makes a good video explaining about Cyrus the great!
@@crictube6846 as I said, some scholars hv referenced dhul qarnayn to alexander III, and some scholars disagree... so no one is really sure...
Kamalrukh Khan okay 👌 Ramadan Kareem
I really like this religion it's a pity is not well known in Italy.
The zoroastrian holy book "Avesta" also called Zend-avesta, contains its cosmogony, law, and liturgy, the teachings of the prophet Zoroaster(Zarathushtra). The extant Avesta is all that remains of a much larger body of scripture, apparently Zoroaster’s transformation of a very ancient tradition. The voluminous manuscripts of the original are said to have been destroyed when Alexander the Great conquered Persia. The present Avesta was assembled from remnants and standardized under the Sāsānian kings. So very less is known about our culture.
Since when did Khan Academy become an expert on history?
I don't know.
He's an expert in every subject, dawg
you pronounced faravahar beaytifully
I wish that Zoroastrian beliefs would be tolerated in Iran... I have no personal relation to any Zoroastrian, but I as a Catholic wish them well and hope for them.
in Iran you can be zoroastrian and they’ll respect you....... They live great lives in Iran.
I really like Zoroastrian religion.... love and respect.
"Good and bad" is honestly just cause and effect.
can you please make new SAT videos on Kaplan book.....please they are so hard.........please please please..help me 😯
The pre-existence of magi were way before zoroastrianism and way before Babylonia Era hence the story Cyrus the Great took over Babylon without a battle (Cyrus Cylinder - British Museum)
I would have appreciated ebel for freedom and equality if it is covered in this ancient establishment. It will be enlightening.
Where did he get the maji thing?
The three Magi believed to have traveled from afar to bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newly-born baby Jesus in Bethlehem - may have been Zoroastrians. ... Many scholars believe the three men were Zoroastrian priests, teaching the philosophy of Zoroaster.
Good piece, I liked how you talked about going into India, but I think you might want to trace back to Indo-Iranians BMAC situated among many of the Avestan holy lands. From Indo-Iranians to PIE Proto-Indo-European Yamnaya?
Does Gayomard and the Bull have anything to do with Hurrian/ Hittite, Minoan Crete bull jumping?
Start of emanations and angels the Yazata.
You talk of influence on Islam you could have mentioned Salman Al-Farsi. Salman Al-Farsi a member of the prophets household. A Magi who set out to find something new in the death throes of Zoroastrianism. Instrumental in the Battle of the Trench. Salman or Solomon connotative of Magic- Western tradition.
You know how Achaemenid heir apparent would govern over Bactria of Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex. Bactria would be modern day Balkh Afghanistan, the source of the ancient world's lapis lazuli.
Bactria-Balkh would be located pretty close to Harappan, Mohenjo Daro Dorian culture. Though I don't see a major breakout into Dorian culture til Alexander and Greco-Bactrian culture.
Learning about the influences that the older religions had on the newer ones actually made me lose my faith in a god. Just like in music, fashion, engineering, etc. it all takes from previous.

I think Vedic age may have been far more older than Zoroastrian. Modern research with the help of satellite imagery and genetic analysis is turning the widely held beliefs upside down, it would be an interesting topic for discussion if you refer to modern research and suggest. Cheers.
Any connection between Ahura Mazda and Akura Matada?
Yes, they are both words that you clearly don't know the meaning of kiddo. That's the connection.
The Mazda motor company is named after Ahura Mazda.
Was he in the Rotary club?
It is saying that zoroastrianism originated from hinduism and sansrit words in their language also signifies it. Also says in veda followers, some of them disliked the hard ship of giving up all physical enjoyments and vegrterianism they sliped away from India but kept veda with them started worshiping SUN. Later they camped at Persia lead them to form a thier own religeon
Probably the other way around. Zoroastrianism predates Hinduism.
You don't mention it's where Mazda the automobile company gets its name.
its not
Zane Dastoor where then?
The company was founded my mr. Matsuda 松田
檀 杏斗. I'm not saying I don't believe you but I'm curious. Why isn't the company just called Matsuda instead of changing it to Mazda?
Officially, the company states that The name was also associated with Ahura Mazda (God of Light)[sic], with the hope that it would brighten the image of these compact vehicles.
The almighty AHURA MAZDA BLESS YOU ALL 🇺🇸🇮🇷🇦🇲
After first reading about Zoroastrianism recently, one of the first things that struck me was indeed the "Three Wise Men" that visited the family of Christ and how they were described as magi. It dawned on me that it was a Zoroastrian term, on top of the fact that they were riding on camels, which were common mounts in ancient Persia if I'm not mistaken. Were they Zoroastrian elders? According to this, my revelation was correct. I also thought about what they brought, the frankincense and mir, and whether they were magical components or something. No idea.
It was almost like a symbolic passing of the torch.
pineapplepeanuts yes you are right ! The three magi were actually Zoroastrians
🔥
Ankhenaten brought forth the first known monotheistic religion, in the 24th century BCE... With God being, Aten - represented by the sun disk. From there, monotheism spread into Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The older religions such as found in Babylon or Sumerian texts, were all polytheistic. 🙌
Except that zoroastrianism is indo-european unlike the abrahamic religions so it didn't have influence from the near east

Does Sal know everything ?
Nichelle Nicols owned a car dealership after she retired from acting. It was called Uhura's Mazda.
Can't believe the same guy who taught my statistics is now teaching me about Zoroastrianism...
well my theory goes like asura was a term for humans, or something which portray humans, their gods which of cource ruled over humans were also asuras, now I think these terms were from a time when sumerians and assyrians were the popular kingdoms, the sumerians were just banished people from the akkadians govt, sumerians looked black(dark skin colour) and to distinguish themselves from their adversary the akkadians made some changes in their names, now they named themselves dev-asura, the changed asuras, and that, asuras are those who are ignorent implying the akkadians for their unruly behavior towards them. Now the thing is if you bear with me. I think the sumerians were the ones that led on to create the Indus valley civilization when pushed and pressured to leave their land in sumer, they then went on to make indra, Shiva and other gods we know of. Now the akkadians were the adversary , now both these groups were actually the follower of the same faith, but made some changes in names, later on one such king named Zoroaster(possibly a descendent of akkadians, possibly a king that made such impact) made his own religion which we now know as Zoroastrianism and the now pushed sumerians which were in the Indian subcontinent were living their life peacefully. Now with the passage of time. The newer generation of white males pushed these somewhat docile sumerians into the south of persent day india and is what we know them of as dravidians, the new white people now came to India and made themselves the authority over other people and what greater an authority is greater than the authority of the religion, so they (Aryan invasion) moved into India, collected the knowledge of the sumerians and classified their gods as the prime gods - vishnu and brahma and wrote down the collective knowledge they now posesses(Vedas and upnishads) and indicated that the gods that you(dravidians) follow like ram, krishna and other notable/popular/respected people were just reincarnations of our God(vishnu) to know superiority, so now accept this caste system we present you and be with it. And the rest of India kinda accepted it.
You might realise that there is no proper hierarchy in Hinduism. Their is somewhat ambiguous roles of bhrama and vishnu and most of the importance however given to shiva but equivalent place is given to vishnu without much involvement in any of the stories expect for claiming the glory and indra the true king of heaven is not revered as much. I don't know I can be utterly wrong at many places entirely wrong on the whole concept. It's something that just came up to my mind that's it. I am open to positive discussion though.
1:23 are u doing okay there buddy?
My friend is a Zoroastrian

Just a quick note on a comment you made concerning Islam: Islam's claim is to be the fulfillment of both Judaism and Christianity, so it is much more than closely related. It claims direct descent from both.
Influence on Abrahamic faiths @ 5:12
Yeah, but he skips over that the Pharisee Jews accepted angels and all those other ideas from the Persians and brought the ideas to Jerusalem and other places. Then, later, the Gnostics and Christians inherited those ideas from the Jews. I think the Sadducees refused to believe in the Persian ideas, but modern Kabbalah has the Persian ideas.
Sumeria had the symbol of the winged man
That's false ,Assyrian had winged man symbol and that's symbol is way diffrent than ahura mazda symbol you can check it yourself and also that symbol is just for between 9th to 8th century BC but the aryans had this symbole way before they even come to iran land today ,its at least for 1500 BC when they migrated to iran .also Asur God symbol is just one of the many different Gods of assyrians and they were pagan and idols worshippers .the Aryans had mithraism and from the mithraism zoroastrian came too and it's one creator not many
