Backfire! Rebecca frightened him so much he won't say!

@prydolf Absolutely! That's why I read the book again and again, it is so rich. That being so, I think the genius is that all these undertones were probably pretty unconscious on du Maurier's part. I mean, I think the various ideas and ideologies and social changes going on around her were soaked up and colouring her every word... Love it. If you've not read Sally Beauman's "Rebecca's Tale", do so. What she makes of it is fantastic.

FredaPeople That was a worthy sequel

@Amanda Hughes I see your point, though I'm not certain the book actually tries to convince you Rebecca wasn't in fact a narc sociopath.
And it's further a good point to raise that male partners can very much be victims of abuse by their wives. Just like in Maxim's time, it remains an issue society and it's perception of males ignores

I must confess I didn't see this twist coming. When I saw all the little girlies in grade school reading this novel I was under the impression that it was a kiddie book. Little did I know it had an actual adult theme. Silly me.

@@PhoenixJohnson29 I first read it when I was about 11 or 12. My parents had it on their book shelf. I also read The Catcher in the Rye and other books that my parents had.

Am I the only one who cheered when de Winter punched Favell?
BTW, Favell must be completely nuts to believe that Ben would side with him, especially after Rebecca threatened Ben with the asylum.

I've decided to buy the DVD. I just can't watch this in 9 minute bits. It's driving me as nutty as Ben 😵

I wonder if Ben saw what happened to Rebecca the night she died? If you listen to some of his rambling in the books and movies seems like he knew she was there, being eaten by the fishes. He didn't like her because she threatened to commit him but he knew he was saw with Maxim, and beside that who would believe him either way. Poor fellow gets so confused pretty easily.

@Tabroxfcc Very good point actually. It took me years to work out that Max as the hero was a little funny. He is totally incapable of seeing what his second wife is going through. He was certainly not a new age man.

I think the cousin acts too much like a hunting dog and the others are too silent, listening.

@prydolf Yes, I've always thought there was a political undertone in this novel too. Rebecca in the "roaring" twenties when the upper classes imploded on their own dacdence, Mrs deW2 is in the thirtieswhen the long held power of the artistocracy were challenged. (Beatrice: "communists" Woman on cliff: "These estates will all be broken up"). Above all, the STAFF were threatened by the new Mrs de W who was not born to the role.

It's funny how in a normal novel, Favell would be the hero and Max the villian

Terrible choice of actor to play Favell. He's ruined the whole end for me. But Anna Massey was brilliant.

Favell deserved that beating-up. A very enjoyable scene. He laughed to cover the humiliation and pain. Like Trump. his character is cowardly throughout.
