Yeah France was famously one of the biggest supporter/protectors of Papal independence, so when they suddenly get defeated and their emperor surrounded and deposed, the Papacy lost their greatest protector.
@@nmpolo A lot of places that Italy and Germany have laid claim to in the past, do not really want to "unify" with them, even if they are Italian or German people living there, especially if it means fighting a big bloody war over them. Most of them are fine living in the country they are in. Now with the EU, where they can easily move if they so wished, the fact that most don't and still live there shows they are pretty fine with their lives there.
I love how much more detailed your work has become over the years, and it's really cool to me that the Paris Commune was mentioned since that had really broad ranging political implications at the time. Great stuff, and great video!
I understand it would complicate things especially on a map at such a large scale, but there were also other (quickly crushed) Communes throughout the country in March and April, especially in cities with large industries. Among others, those include Le Creusot, Saint-Etienne, Narbonne, Toulouse, and the one in Marseille even holds for twelve days. Of course, none of them have had a cultural impact similar to the Paris Commune.
I couldn’t find much information on all of them and the ones I could find were ones that either never got to the level of seizing a city like Besancon or were crushed in one day so they wouldn’t show up anyway, like in Lyons.
by standard of a single-day occupation by leftist collective, there was also a St Louis Commune in 1877. But recording that on a day-by-day map would look quite boring

Otto von Bismarck was truly an incredible leader in terms of his impact on the course of Europe at the turn of the 19th century. If Kaiser Wilhelm II had actually followed Bismarck’s lead and his foreign policy of realpolitik, WWI could have been avoided, because Bismarck had no intention of provoking the British, unlike Wilhelm II, who expanded Germany’s navy to rival Britain’s navy in the 1890s.
Respect to those Frenchmen who held the forts. Their country was in turmoil and revolution, their loved ones were likely living under German occupation, and they probably had little access to reliable outside information, but they were given the task of holding their position and they held long after almost all others had given up.
When I recall correctly I think the Germans simply went around them in order not to waste time and efforts and simply tried to make them surrender over time by making them exhaust themselves.

If you're going to include the Paris commune, you need to include the others. They were also really important back then, played an important role overall, even if they each had a different level of success and weren't as seen from the outside for not being Paris. Some lived longer than Paris, for example.

No, it was by far not more than what Germany was forced to pay. Not even close. And keep in mind that France did have her colonies and there has been a long history of France invading German lands before. Also the French marched through Berlin after the end of ww1 AND during Napoleon’s times(the Germans then returned that favor again both times and 3 times total). I also don’t recall millions of French civilians starving to death due to a blockade(even still after the Versailles treaty was signed), or having to give up all colonies, having ALL foreign assets frozen and confiscated, having to give up several majority and historically French territories, having to give up most of their mines and industrial output while at the same time. Ring forced to pay reparations, having to give up control over their own military force, having to face invasions of their industrial heartland when payment didn’t occur right at time(joint French and Belgian invasion of the Rhineland in the 1920s with massacres and rapes happening), or having give up her entire naval and commercial fleet. But all of this and even more happened to Germany right after the end of ww1 as a result of Versailles Treaty. Not to mention that the right of self-determination for German speaking people had been violated continuously post-ww1. All important factors for why the Treaty of Versailles is so controversial and disliked, so many things that you‘ve simply glossed over. What you have said there is a modern myth that is based on old propaganda.

Versailles wasn't the main factor in the rise of the Nazis, that has more to do with the Great Depression, bourgeois anticommunism, and seeds planted by German militarism in the prior decades, as well as most importantly the nature of European colonial violence, which inevitably turned inwards.
Not much different as Germany taking Alsace-Lorraine was more of an excuse for the saltiness. The true saltiness came from having lost at all, and the majority German parts of Alsace and parts of Lorraine not being under the control of the french state anymore was a reminder of that.

Imagine if the conflict escalated, and WW1 started right there and then. I don't know a lot about the other countries, but in 1870, my country (The Kingdom of the Netherlands) was scared shitless and thought the Prussians would eventually come for them. (Our government backed the French cause). What followed was a disastrous attempt at mobilising the armed forces, and by the time somewhat of a skeleton of a mobile field-army was arranged, the war was essentially over. :')

At no point did Italy consider siding against France. England already amassed 11,000 troops and growing stationed at their Northern Confederacies border now called Canada ready to open a Northern Theatre to divert Union troops away from their Southern Confederacy then to attack The Unions naval blockade. The Union would have been completely destroyed and annexed by those two great powers leaving the Confederates to exist as either a puppet state of London or to be fully brought back into the fold of the British Empire. London was already courting (threatening/bribing) other countries to get involved like Spain while Russia was in talks with Prussia to ally with incase London and France was to intervene. Seeing all of this Tsar Alexander II wrote a letter to Queen Victoria saying “If you enter in this war it will be a casus belli for all out war with the Russian Empire”. The stage was set for the 1st World War and Russia stopped it. There is also a memorial in San Francisco for the hundreds of Russian sailors who came off their Asiatic fleet ships that died while helping the city put out a fire that threatened to lay waste to it during the War.

A confederate war ship spent a lot of time in Australian waters and was supported by the Australian public, some even signing on as crew members. Russia also helped Thailand (Kingdom of Siam) maintain its sovereignty from being completely Partitioned/Annexed from the British and French around the same time. After the war Lincoln wanted to rebuild the South and had plans to do so. He and half his Cabinet were assassinated by London. Most of the Confederate Operations for the Civil War and post war plans and assassinations were made in London and then sent to Montreal a hub for spies and intel in the Americas for the British Empire then passed through to Confederate President Jefferson Davis to follow the orders. Many of the South's own leaders were selling out the South to British interest even General Lee. Unfortunately London had many of their Tentacles and Webs on both sides. It was in the 1870s that a Paradigm Shift happened were the British took control within the Reunited States through subversion (which was easier to do now as their agents were brought back into the Union and many of their opponents assassinated) and have had it all the way up to this day. It was my first every-day video but my style was a bit different then. No cities, no name labels, usually thinner borders. Smaller sized maps too.

Technically the Soviet Union, arguably, in 1923, when Germany and Austria lost WW1. Turkey won a war of independence in 2023 too against the Ottomans and the Greeks and a bunch of others. France in 1945 won as part of the Allied powers, having the Third Republic destroyed in the process. France in the 100 Years War. France won a bunch of wars against several coalitions in the 1790s.

No, it was by far not more than what Germany was forced to pay. Not even close. And keep in mind that France did have her colonies and there has been a long history of France invading German lands before. Also the French marched through Berlin after the end of ww1 AND during Napoleon’s times(the Germans then returned that favor again both times and 3 times total). I also don’t recall millions of French civilians starving to death due to a blockade(even still after the Versailles treaty was signed), or having to give up all colonies, having ALL foreign assets frozen and confiscated, having to give up several majority and historically French territories, having to give up most of their mines and industrial output while at the same time. Ring forced to pay reparations, having to give up control over their own military force, having to face invasions of their industrial heartland when payment didn’t occur right at time(joint French and Belgian invasion of the Rhineland in the 1920s with massacres and rapes happening), or having give up her entire naval and commercial fleet. But all of this and even more happened to Germany right after the end of ww1 as a result of Versailles Treaty. Not to mention that the right of self-determination for German speaking people had been violated continuously post-ww1. All important factors for why the Treaty of Versailles is so controversial and disliked, so many things that you‘ve simply glossed over. What you have said there is a modern myth that is based on old propaganda.

Imagine if the terms had actually been harsh and the Nazis prevented from power, as after 1945. That would have been a downright utopian world to live in compared to what happened.
Its crazy to see a war which lasted a short period of time, kick start alot of impoetant stuff in the last century. The German Empire would be formed, the Bonapartes would never rule France again and neither will there be another French Empire, the French would be salty for losing and this would be the one of the reasons for France humiliating Germany in the Treaty of Versailles after WW1 (right after France contributes most to the Entente during WW1) and getting back Alsace-Lorraine.

Versailles wasn't the main factor in the rise of the Nazis, that has more to do with the Great Depression, bourgeois anticommunism, and seeds planted by German militarism in the prior decades, as well as most importantly the nature of European colonial violence, which inevitably turned inwards.

Not much different as Germany taking Alsace-Lorraine was more of an excuse for the saltiness. The true saltiness came from having lost at all, and the majority German parts of Alsace and parts of Lorraine not being under the control of the french state anymore was a reminder of that.

Italy had in fact considered joining in an anti-Prussian coalition of France, Austria-Hungary and itself earlier in the year.

Prussia and Italy were never close, Prussia hadn't lifted a finger to aid Italian unification while only agreeing to an alliance with Italy against Austria to gain French promises of neutrality. Otherwise, the Italian Government was deeply Francophilic. There is ample evidence that discussions for the creation of an anti-Prussian coalition was underway in 1868 before falling apart primarily over Hungarian veto and the Roman Question. At no point did Italy consider siding against France.

One of the Reasons France was angry at Prussia (and Russia) was the American Civil War since it was Russia who saved The Union during the American Civil War just years prior as they sent their Navy to San Francisco and New York when England and France were just about to enter the war on the side of the Confederates since London created the Confederates. France was already in Mexico making a spear head movement to resupply the Confederates and to open up a Pacific Theatre and to create a port in California. England already amassed 11,000 troops and growing stationed at their Northern Confederacies border now called Canada ready to open a Northern Theatre to divert Union troops away from their Southern Confederacy then to attack The Unions naval blockade. The Union would have been completely destroyed and annexed by those two great powers leaving the Confederates to exist as either a puppet state of London or to be fully brought back into the fold of the British Empire.
London was already courting (threatening/bribing) other countries to get involved like Spain while Russia was in talks with Prussia to ally with incase London and France was to intervene.
Seeing all of this Tsar Alexander II wrote a letter to Queen Victoria saying “If you enter in this war it will be a casus belli for all out war with the Russian Empire”. The stage was set for the 1st World War and Russia stopped it.

hundreds of Russian sailors who came off their Asiatic fleet ships that died while helping the city put out a fire that threatened to lay waste to it during the War.

A confederate war ship spent a lot of time in Australian waters and was supported by the Australian public, some even signing on as crew members. This Confederate war ship laid waist to the US Pacific whaling fleet and is reported to have fired the last shot in the war. The name of the ship was called the CSS Shenandoah.
Russia also helped Thailand (Kingdom of Siam) maintain its sovereignty from being completely Partitioned/Annexed from the British and French around the same time. The very word Thai (ไทย) means 'free man' in the Thai language which is partially to thank to the Russians as they might have ended up being a colony or part of another country/colony if not for their intervention.

After the war Lincoln wanted to rebuild the South and had plans to do so. He and half his Cabinet were assassinated by London. Many of the others that survived had multiple assassination attempts on them especially William Seward who had around a dozen or so, a few almost killing him. Most of the Confederate Operations for the Civil War and post war plans and assassinations were made in London and then sent to Montreal a hub for spies and intel in the Americas for the British Empire then passed through to Confederate President Jefferson Davis to follow the orders. Many of the South's own leaders were selling out the South to British interest even General Lee. Unfortunately London had many of their Tentacles and Webs on both sides. Lincoln stated that the Department Of State is completely controlled by British Interest that he had to constantly fight against. It was in the 1870s that a Paradigm Shift happened were the British took control within the Reunited States through subversion (which was easier to do now as their agents were brought back into the Union and many of their opponents assassinated) and have had it all the way up to this day. Some presidents fought against it like Garfield, McKinley, Harding, Roosevelt, and Kennedy and all were killed.
