  • Yes, apparently that's what I've been doing wrong all this time.

I just made one of these from a box of (oily) bits... I managed to convince mine to kick over, but it took several sacrifices to the dark one (Lucas). The timing was absolutely off and it's a bastard to set the static timing.
I also bought a chinese carb to rule out the kitchen tap that is an Amal Monobloc.
Several dead goats later and it's a 2 kicker! Producing several lovely trickles of oil that doubles up as a kind of Zen feature for my garage, relaxing.

This is encouraging. I discovered the advance/retard was gummed up after this video, and I have a brand new kitchen tap (Chinese air filter though) and a strong spark so I have high hopes for the next session 🙂

You are due for something less troublesome. I know nothing about BSA B40 engines so just guessing. A big spark and no start, can you fudge the timing a bit, or isolate the ignition circuit for maximum current when starting? Perhaps copy old Harley big twins and set up the breaker housing so it can be retarded for starting and moved back to normal for running? My philosophy is anything mechanical is fair game for attempted improvement, done tastefully and with respect of course. Keep the faith and good luck with it!

I've just discovered the advance/retard is all gummed up, so hope exists 🙂
