Why should emulators (which are usually coded by a free and independent community) become paid apps after decades of a happy free tradition? Weird and ugly idea.. But I think that is because you don't understand the concept of emulation correctly: Running an emulator on this device would not decrease the income of the Evercade's vendor, but actually increase on it, because it would motivate more people to buy the handheld, so they can play old 80s and 90s abandonware in emulation. An emulator does not mean playing the current games (made specifically for the Evercade) for free, that would be a loader.
But the original emulator is not a paid product. Some of the paid offers are a convinience service for not having to compile ot self, and most are just rip off where the original emulator is free.
The good question is how strong is the device? I'm sure it can emulate up to game boy advance but PS1 could be a stretch. They are making devices for PS1 emulation the are 70 euros. If you go to retro dodo channel you'll see them

@@AndreaFromTokyo I agree, I don't see collectors going for this at all. But there is always the chance that they mess something up and I have to figure out what and how to fix it as they're both under 10. Also when you have 6000 games in a list it becomes really hard to try to find something you want to play even as someone who's experienced many of them, let alone a child who has no clue. Ordered a unit, and while it's on its way, did a little bit of digging of the firmware that's publicly available on their site, and it turns out this runs on a Rockchip RK3128 with what is pretty much a plain Linux distro with a frontend based off of Rockchip's default MiniGUI frontend and a copy of RetroArch. Cartridges appear to be SD cards. I'm kind of disappointed TBH, looks like very little original effort has gone into the software, and it's just a dedicated RetroArch machine at the end of the day.
Does the Evercade has the option to add scanlines or filters ? If there's no option for scanlines is a no-go for me. Love the idea tho. I would like to see a teardown too.
More doomed than the Ouya! Its a nice unit but theres too many great handhelds out there that you can run thousands of games from dozens of consoles on a single SD card.
AndreaFromTokyo Or worse depending on what ones preferances is. Android do quite well, in fact, I have a tablet with android for retro gaming. But dedicated retro gaming devices has their pros over android devices as well.
AndreaFromTokyo For the right price this device would be a better choice, depending also on what kind of systems you like to emulate. Think this device, as a portable device for SNES emulation. It would do that job excellent, and better than an android device that you have to connect a bluetooth controller, install an emulator on, and roms, on which you can be disturbed by facebook-comment notifications, calls, texts, e.t.c.
@@AndreaFromTokyo Have to agree. They could have gone for 4:3 and added another inch to its size. That, with a glass screen would have made it just about perfect.
Fan modding got retroarch on switch and no reason they can't add a store like the virtual console on wii which was great but they just havn't bothered probably down to the hassle of licensing all the games. Still plenty of their own games though but again they over charge see nes roms on 3ds and they never carried them over with platforms which is a terrible practice. It seems nintendo has chosen to only give a small amount of roms available to play if you pay for the online (acception of a few compilations released on cartridge) , very disappointing really.
There is Xeno crisis/Tanglewood collection due out in September hit the evercade along with an Atari lynx collection . There are a lot of indie games planned for the handheld going forward.
Honestly, I don't really see the point of this device. As said in the video, anyone actually interested in emulation is a hundred times better off just buying one of the Chinese emulation handhelds. So that leaves us with collectors as the only possible buyers for this product. But if I was a collector, why should I buy this thing? Where's the point in collecting a cheaply made (but premium priced) handheld? The screen cover and the whole shell is plasticky and will probably collect its first scratch within the first couple of days after taking it out of the box. The screen itself is not a high quality component either. The sound is tinny, too. And then there's the cartridges. The evercade website currently has 12 cartridges on display (with more to come). So if you buy the handheld version that comes with 3 cartridges for $99 and you buy the rest of the cartridges at $20 each (Because that's what collectors do, right?) the whole thing costs you $279. To be blunt: For the product on offer that price is insane. Given the low production quality of the handheld unit itself the cynical side of me dares to say that it's almost like the people who came up with this thing expect the buyers to never actually take the unit or the games out of their boxes. A very very very pricey novelty item purely for collectors who put the boxes on a shelf to then sell them unopened to other collectors in a couple of years. And that seems to be all the evercade is meant to be.
Maybe people like the guy who developed Tanzer would actually like to be paid for his efforts? Hard as it may seem to believe to some. People actually deserve to make a living for providing you with entertainment.
@@AndreaFromTokyo I don't think it's aimed at people looking at buying an aliexpress knockoff for their kid. It's clearly marketed at people who like to collect legit licensed physical games. As for the "premium." The Tanzer cart (which also contains Xenocrisis) is half the price that buying the game physically for the Megadrive was on kickstarter.
@@AndreaFromTokyo what part of what I said gave you trouble? Firstly, these games are not all 30 years old. That's patently false. The game I mentioned 'Tanzer' is an independently produced Megadrive game financed via kickstarter and made in 2019. You could get a physical cart of it for $40, the Evercade version costs half of that and also includes another new (2019) megadrive game, Xeno Crisis. The developers of these games are absolutely getting rewarded for this in royalties. These are just two examples. If you plan to do anymore "awareness raising" with your fellow gamers then a good starting point would be fact checking so that you understand what are talking about in the first place.
Apparently it did since I have had to repeat myself and yet have said consistently the same thing in every message. You bought a cheap aliexpress famiclone for your kid. Good for you. I have a dozen of them also. So what? That doesn't invalidate the Evercade anymore than it invalidated the Wii virtual console, the Arcade Archives on PS4 or the SNES games you can play with an online subscription to Switch. In fact the argument can be made that the Evercade is a step better than all three as it allows you to physically and legally own the means to play these games forever. We all know how to emulate. We all know how to buy old games on ebay. Spot the difference. This one actually pays developers and license holders for using their games. Whether it's your cup of tea or not is your business but If you think that nobody is interested in the possibilities a system like this has, new indy devs especially, then you are patently wrong.
@@AndreaFromTokyo what "facts", what "counters"? Every reply comes across as rambling and bizarre logic. What's your latest point? Indies did well on Switch so no developer should take money by allowing a system likely to sell far less to also distribute their game!? Welcome to the world of multi-format releases. Why wouldn't a dev want extra money? There is no exclusivity here. The only people taking any sort of risk is the maker of the Evercade itself. There is nothing for a developer or license holder to lose. You are literally arguing with a collector who owns over 2000 physical games AND is interested in buying and collecting for Evercade that such a person doesn't exist. Ridiculous. If you had any actual "facts" about you, then you wouldn't need to keep going back to the hoary old chestnut of "I am allowed my opinion" as a defense for whatever argument you seem to think you are having here.
Yes Brad there are a hell of a lot of cartridges planned going forward there are two new ones set for this September an Atari lynx collection & indie games Xeno crisis/Tanglewood there are still two more cartridges to announce in 2020 & loads more over the next few years so will be plenty of choice including arcade collections, RPG collections, Sega collections etc. I've spoken to the evercade team since it was in early development it's going to have a good lifespan & thanks for thinking of spending your hard earned cash on it.
Arcade emulation is difficult on systems like this because MAME needs a very powerful CPU and any other arcade emulatior (eg Final Burn) is under a piracy-only licence.
There are arcade collections planned & set for release next year don't expect everything in 5 mins please be patient there are a lot of great things on the way
@@sparkleEXP1 I figured they just happened to have those licenses lying around since the collections are the same as the ones I saw in those mini arcade games at Wal-Mart. I'll pay attention when the content gets decent.
It's sort of annoying that with the namco arcade pack your not getting true arcade games but the console versions of the arcade games. I do not understand why they don't use the real arcade games roms. To my way of thinking that would give this a lot more value. Emulating old consoles games does not thrill me. 4 years this would have been awesome. However now?
Hi. I know it's a little off topic. but is there any controller for the android phone that charges the phone during the game? something like Razer Kishi which hasn't been released yet.
Don't like the idea of not choosing what games you get. Only 5 games on some of the carts for 20 seems expensive. The cartridges are probably non hackable with tiny storage. I already have a Picade, GPi, RG350, Pocket Go 1 and 2 and all the Minis so I am just about done with these consoles. It needs to be a lot better than this for me to buy.
Definitely want to see a tear down, but see if you can do the cartridge too. I'm thinking it's just a SD card in disguise and would mean hacking the unit may be very easy.
I checked out Gamesack's review and apparently this thing has a lot of issues with button assignments on games. In particular, look at Double Dragon 2 on the Technos cart. It's unplayable.
I really don't like that, for those games which were arcade games, they have used the NES version. I understand they wanted a consistent aspect ratio across them, and arcade games can vary a bit, but I think the nicer graphics and smoother gameplay of the arcade originals would have been worth it. Or at least, I would have liked to make that decision for myself.
This will sell from Walmart shelves by the truckload to people who are not aware of the multitude of Emu Handhelds available already. I won't be buying one even when it is hacked, it does not have an analogue joystick which IMO is a must. This also wins the award hands-down for the ugliest GUI in a handheld ever!
Calling it a "Cartridge" based system is a misnomer. Its just a proprietary flash media chip in a big plastic case. It would be like calling the Nintendo Switch or PS Vita Cartridge based systems. They arent and neither is this. Also seeing a few Nes ports of Arcade games which typically are the crappier version of this game. This thing is probably too weak to run mame or fba. Its basically a cash grab for nostalgic people who dont know better. There is nothing standout about the hardware either. Your basically paying a premium for small packs of roms and a restricted hardware platform.
$240 for the whole set (retail) of which you will play only 20% of the games...the switch lite still exists right? This is an overpriced novelty at best.
You didn't throw the boomerang? That right there would have told me whether it was the US release or the Japan release. There's a big change in difficulty and the big tell is whether you can catch the boomerang after you throw it or not.
And the good news is there is a 2nd Atari lynx collection planned it might not have as many games on the cartridge however I've been told by the evercade company it will be focusing more on the big hitters everyone asked for this time round so fingers crossed 🤞🙏🍀!!!
I can't help but think that this is a massive rip off. The fact that the games are "licensed" means next to nothing. These will all be roms ripped off the internet, with Evercade paying a small sum to whichever holding company owns the rights. None of the people originally involved with the games are going to see a penny! Plus you're paying a premium for a proprietary cartridge. For me, I'm going to stick with the el cheapo emulation options.
I want to support the original devs, but I don’t want to pay a premium for locked down hardware. Some of the carts themselves are good value with the included games, but locked to an proprietary handheld with no room for expansion makes them not worthwhile.
Nice toy, I might even consider get one, if it wasn't for those glossy buttons. Hoping to see a new version with matte plastic buttons. No way to play two players? That's a big no for me than
I don’t think this is made for collectors only . I imagine a lot of kids will be buying this up too like the little Atgames products. I like this cuz they select a few good games and put it on a cartridge. Where else wit raspberry pi u have a million games and never know what to play. I don’t like any system wit more than 50 games on it
People like to own things legitimately not just using roms and collectors will appreciate it he pointed it out early on, these would never try to compete with handhelds using roms you get yourself but then again emulation via those outside of having all the games yourself is offically illegal.
this is going to be hacked in a week to run an emulator and roms
Emulators will be fine if they are paid apps and if the devs get their money.
Because I don’t think it will be available in every country.

More doomed than the Ouya! Its a nice unit but theres too many great handhelds out there that you can run thousands of games from dozens of consoles on a single SD card.
Yea we see why have thousands of games on one console that you wouldnt play with the right support i think it will go far
How the hell do you replace the batteries later on in life? I will wait for the evercade 2 or something better that can run on normal AA.
wonder what SOC and operating system this guy runs, is it hackable?
Sounds like great value...... if it was released in 2000 AD.
I am early today I loved your 4k series
Waiting for the next one
What’s up ETA. Appreciate the videos. Is this unit going to be hacked to play arcade games?
This, with a cartridge that accept micro sd cards with roms on it, would be king.
No. Any half decent Android device kills this.
Nick Baldeagle Yes, but that is a an android device, this is a dedicated retro-gaming device.
AndreaFromTokyo I could also start my gaming computer rig an emulate whatever I want to, but at times, dedicated devices like this, has their place.
Why does it have a 16:9 screen if it emulate 4:3 games only? 🤔
Sorry but my OCD can't let it pass.
Cheaper?
@@AndreaFromTokyo Gotcha. The only reason then is that they want to keep the door open for 16:9 systems? Makes no sense otherwise =)
@@AndreaFromTokyo Have to agree. They could have gone for 4:3 and added another inch to its size. That, with a glass screen would have made it just about perfect.
We have a Lynx Cart out this year with an aspect ratio of 1.57:1. This is a popular addition to the system and we have more planned.
@@EvercadeRetro Looking forward to it. So the 16:9 ratio will come in handy going forward?
Again, couldn't all be done on a Switch? Between the downloadable retro games and the Atari vault you have just about everything plus so much more
Fan modding got retroarch on switch and no reason they can't add a store like the virtual console on wii which was great but they just havn't bothered probably down to the hassle of licensing all the games.
It's a beautiful looking handheld
can't wait for a Capcom and SNK cartridge
I'm pretty sure SNK license won't happen, as there is a NeoGeo system in the work
I'm interested in a teardown!
I Hope that there are going to be original indie games on on this platform at some point.
There is Xeno crisis/Tanglewood collection due out in September hit the evercade along with an Atari lynx collection . There are a lot of indie games planned for the handheld going forward.
There is a day 1 update being sent out to fix the button mapping
I'd be interested to see what's inside
What screen protector would you recommend for this evercade?
I use DLO Surface Shields for 4.3 GPS screens...they fit perfect plus adds an anti-glare coating for outside gaming...
eta prime collab with retro dodo it will be fun
I noticed all the games are rated by PEGI, does that mean it's all Euro roms and fps?
Hey Prime do you think if this device goes well will they make more cartridges down the line this unit would make great for going on vacations with.
Are you serious? Get a Bluetooth controller and use your phone. You can play much better games than this P. O. S.
@@Nickbaldeagle02SOME OF US CAN'T AFFORD THAT STUFF AND HAVE LOOK FOR CHEAPER ALTERNATIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still hate that they used NES ROMS over the arcade versions. NES Bad Dudes is awful.
Arcade emulation is difficult on systems like this because MAME needs a very powerful CPU and any other arcade emulatior (eg Final Burn) is under a piracy-only licence.
@@GeoNeilUK Really not good enough. To run Double Dragon? The makers never commented on CPU issues. Just some nonsense about resolution.
I'll pay attention when the content gets decent.
can you do more on the Technos cart, that river city image is throwing me off. Was there an arcade of the game otherwise that screen doesn't match
True arcade collections are set for release next year not just namco either along with more indie games etc watch this space
@@sparkleEXP1 nice. I don't mind indie games coming on board. That is going to help sell more units.
I think it's inevitable that you will tear this down. :)
Yes sir we are very interested for a tear down video
I'd like to see Pac-Man running on it considering I'm planning on picking one up
Very cool handheld console💗
Do u think they’ll make a Sequel to the Evercade?
Greetings ETA PRIME, I would like to see a video about how to play Sega Saturn in 4K
Cheo Chessman *_LOL_*
Wouldn't we all lol 😁
Load up your emulator, select 4K resolution.
@@Nickbaldeagle02 Thanks, I prefer a video by ETA PRIME
@@cheochessman2922 well, he's not made one.

This has been resolved with a firmware fix: www.evercade.co.uk/firmware-update/
I really don't like that, for those games which were arcade games, they have used the NES version. I understand they wanted a consistent aspect ratio across them, and arcade games can vary a bit, but I think the nicer graphics and smoother gameplay of the arcade originals would have been worth it. Or at least, I would have liked to make that decision for myself.
This will sell from Walmart shelves by the truckload to people who are not aware of the multitude of Emu Handhelds available already.
I won't be buying one even when it is hacked, it does not have an analogue joystick which IMO is a must.
This also wins the award hands-down for the ugliest GUI in a handheld ever!
can you tear down one of the carts? Maybe its just an sd card + adapter inside..
Not interested but it does look cool.
It's the Japanese version. You can tell from the BGM playing on the first stage. The level music is shuffled differently between US and Japan.
Can you just open it up and replace the battery or would you have to solder a new one in it when it goes bad in a couple years?
Pre ordered this as soon as I saw they are releasing an Atari Lynx collection.
And the good news is there is a 2nd Atari lynx collection planned it might not have as many games on the cartridge however I've been told by the evercade company it will be focusing more on the big hitters everyone asked for this time round so fingers crossed 🤞🙏🍀!!!
@@sparkleEXP1 that is exciting, I did notice that this one doesn't have some of the classic such as Blue Lightning, Road Blaster, Chequered Flag etc.
Can you please make a video on Android frontends, like Reset Collection, DIG, Arc browser , ect
I preordered this and most of the other games
@@AndreaFromTokyo ....I am not a bot I saw this thing a few weeks ago while messing around on Amazon.
That's a big no for me than
No USB-C or Glass Screen? That's unfortunate ☹️
Why not a 4:3 screen?
Lynx is coming.
Teardown! Teardown! Teardown!
Use lump hammer if needed! =)
I don't really like the look of that D-Pad. It looks a bit garbo.
Yea, it looks pretty bad from the video. Maybe the real thing looks better, but who knows.
It feels like the Sega Saturn pad very good indeed.
I don’t think this is made for collectors only . I imagine a lot of kids will be buying this up too like the little Atgames products. I like this cuz they select a few good games and put it on a cartridge. Where else wit raspberry pi u have a million games and never know what to play. I don’t like any system wit more than 50 games on it
For a second there I thought I was listening to Lon Simon.
Would you really buy this though when imo the odroid go would blow it out of water 😬🤔😷 it is nice though.
People like to own things legitimately not just using roms and collectors will appreciate it he pointed it out early on, these would never try to compete with handhelds using roms you get yourself but then again emulation via those outside of having all the games yourself is offically illegal.
What is the point of cartridge running emulation than a sdcard? Oh wait to make more money.
prob they paid a licence fee for the games. so to avoid any copyright issues
