I have long wanted a Mantis tiller. Last week I was given an old one that had set in a storage unit for years. This video happened at the right time for me. Thank you.
That’s why I don’t lend my stuff out. I’ll give it away if I don’t want it anymore but I don’t lend out my equipment or tools because most don’t take care of them the way I do.
The eggs you get from your own chickens will be higher in vitamins than store bought and will stay fresher longer if you dont wash them they have a coating on the outside that helps keep them fresh you can smash up the shells and feed them back to the chickens let them run free and your yard will be bug free in no time good luck
I have a mantis that I found up under an old house that our church bought. The house was behind our church and the old gentleman that lived there ran a small nursery operation in the back of the property. It had been under the house so long that the tines had rotted completely off the thing. I replaced the tines and rebuilt the carb. Been using it for about ten years. I think it’s pretty close to forty years old and runs great. They do last forever!!!
Here's a trick I use when replacing the primer bulb. Mash the bulb in and ease up. Most of the time this will get the gas to start flowing into the primer bulb. If you push down on the bulb too fast or you keep pumping it, all you're doing is pushing the gas back into the tank. Pushing down and then slowly raising the bulb while your thumb is still on it will allow the line to fill with gas.
I could watch you work all day long! Bringing something back from the depths of hell is soooo satisfying. Good luck with the babies - they are adorable👍
I'm way older than you and I remember when you saw Mantis Tiller commercials on TV all the time. So fun to share your VICTORY. Love your channel and believe it or not, I'm learning!
My father worked on small engine repair the last 40 years of his life. He repaired a Mantis Tiller and gave it to my brother. One tank full of paint thinner and it was done. I grew up in Grove, Ok and now live in Tulsa. We raised 5 buildings of chickens at a time. There was 8,000 in each building. From new chicks to laying eggs and off to laying houses. As a teenager I worked all over NE Oklahoma and Arkansas on chicken catching crews. Good luck with the Chicks, since you are the Chickanic you should do good. At that size they will eat 24/7 and grow fast. Believe it or not back in the early 70's we would open the ends of the building and let the chickens out. Main predators during day was crows. At night they all went back in building, so we closed doors.
Where do I begin? I never thought to stretch those fuel lines. I've rebuilt alot of carbs from 2cyle to 4bbl. I always use carb cleaner and compressed air. Your enthusiasm over getting an engine to run is contagious.I can recall not giving up until the engine fired! Having chickens and fresh eggs is very sustainable. Once the chicks mature, feed them anything. Twice a year we had lobster and gave the chickens the shells. The next day the egg yolks were dark orange! In my opinion your videos are so detailed and informative that anyone could watch them and try their hand at repairs. Even those who can't, it's great to see what was done to repair their equipment and that's invaluable. I learned most of what I know from watching and helping Technicians from Auto Mechanics to the Glamour Trades! You may just inspire kids to enter the trades. There's a deficit of Trades persons. Talking up Mfgrs and cautioning consumers against problematic new equipment is extraordinary! I love that they listen to you. Finally we have a voice! Thank you, Bre! Your efforts go far beyond what you may realize!
The Mantis tiller reminds me of the old Lawn Boy mowers. Three things that would kill them? Straight gasoline fuel. dirt in the reed valves and worn crankcase seals. Definitely outlasted Briggs and Stratton engines.
My Poulan has worked very well for me. Used it just a couple of days ago after it had been sitting all winter. Yes, I *DID* fill the tank and carb with Mystery Oil! Started right up after I changed it out for good gas. I learned THAT little trick from YOU, Bre! Thanks!! ❤
Thanks for reminding me to pull my Mantis out and see if it still fires. Been in my shed for.. five years? Got it for free ten years ago and then started doing no-till gardening so it's just been sitting. Did five-year ago me store it properly the way Bre shows? Probably not, five-year ago me was pretty stupid and wasn't watching this wonderful, informative channel.
I watched over a dozen videos on how to troubleshoot and repair my Husqvarna 128LD Trimmer. Most were pretty bad. A few were well done and useful. But then I discovered Chickanic! Your video was amazing. You knew what you were doing. You explained exactly what you were doing. They video quality was outstanding. You did a great job in every respect... and you were fun to watch! I've now watched several more of your videos and have become a fan. Thank you for what you do and how you do it. You Done Good! Larry in Raleigh
Had several Poulans over the years and cut many trees. If it is what your budget can afford they get the job done. Finally was able to get a Husqvarna but the Poulan brand never let me down
Just found your channel. Did small engine repair as a hobby for several years. Bought non running stuff, swapped parts around and repaired then resold. Retired now but still like to see stuff like on your channel. New fan.
Remember chickens HAVE to have a bit of sand around so that it can be used in the chick's gizzard to digest their food. It's a love hat3 relationship they are ,enjoy them and it's good to have them around. And yes feeding them back the calcium from eggshells is very good for them too.
This is the first time I have tinkered with a lawnmower.....ever. As you have given me confidence pulling apart a carby and airfilter and other things, I was able to pull apart a free mower that was sitting for 8 yeras and put it back together again and with the first pull it started.. Woohoo. Now to look at the whipper snipper and reel mower. Thanks from Bill in Perth WA.
You are blessed with a beautiful personality to show people how to fix their stuff . I really appreciate you pointing out necessary maintenance and showing safety measures.
Your chicks are adorable! We finally got four girls after talking about it for years. Ours are a little over a year old and they look for us to come play with them every day. If you socialize with them, they will come running when they see you, especially if you bring them goodies everyday. Ours love Cheerios and crushed corn chips! You will love them! Not sure how you're going to keep them, but they do need a lot of room. Those coops they sell ain't gonna cut it. I hope you'll keep us posted on them.
My neighbor threw out her sons tools when he left and on top of the pile was a brand new Mantis tiller with the price tag still on it. I have ran it for years and it still works like brand new.
The one way valves in the top of the carb can be rejuvenated with Gunk Gallon carb dip and and ultrasonic cleaner I just had one that would not prime at all and soaking that plate in the US opened back up and operated like new. It did take quite a while. I also have one of those Mantis tillers and it is a beast.
Love turning trash into treasure videos. So much fun seeing your excitement when you get them running. I know its a rewarding feeling. I had chickens when we lived in New Jersey. They are lots of fun to watch and not a ton of work. Lots of eggs. Love the videos, keep them coming. Regards.
Bre, Google welcome to chickenlandia! Dalia has many videos on raising chick's to chickens and how to set up for your chick's and how to care for and prevent illnesses in your chick's/chickens. She started out in the suburbs in her back yard and now has a beautiful chicken coop/run at her home in a more country setting. This should help you get going. 😊
Good Lord Lady! You impress me and I ran a VW shop as a young fellow. I told my son's about your channel as they will both be buying homes and then mowers here in sunny Florida where the mowing season is very long. I have always preached buy once, cry once to them.
Use tread lift feeders for your chickens when they are close to being full grown, zero waste. GRANDPA FEEDERES is the best brand. Have a door/gate that keeps predators (opossums, racoons, foxes) out of the coop where they roost.
You just saved me time, money, and frustration! One of the lines coming out of my string trimmer gas tank was crackes. I just pulled a little out of the tank, cut it off clean, and reconnected it. Started 3rd pull. Woot!
It's so much fun watching the defeat of the 2-stroke mechs. They don't stand a chance! Have fun with the chicks, but always remember - they're fragile and even with the absolute best care - nature can be a beast. be ready for hearbreak now and then, but I hope for the best!
3 weeks ago! They're about the same age as mine! I have a straight run of Whiting True Blues(Blue Egg Layers). I'm definitely going to have more roosters than I need. If you have 16 hens, your flock will support two roosters. If you or your husband ever have business near the DFW metro area, you're welcome to one or two! Besides blue eggs, Whiting True Blues were also bred to have pretty feathers for making fly fishing lures, so they're going to be very pretty besides being able to potentially breed Olive egg-laying hens for you. Serious offer, I'm probably going to have at least 10 spare roosters that I'm going to have to figure out what to do with them!
I used to hate Poulan saws when worked as a small engine mechanic in the 80s. I have a Craftsman branded Poulan for twenty+ years. I have never had to do anything to it besides add oil, gas and keep a sharp chain on it. My newer Stihl is much more powerful, but the Poulan just runs perfect without any maintenance.
Congratulations on your great gift of a Mantis and your new flock. Eggs are not cheaper but the quality is so much better and the birds are entertaining and they do a lot for bug control too just keep them out of the garden until your plants are big enough not to be uprooted.
Chicken Suggestion for the chickanic. As the chick's grow, keep raising the feeder and waters to the level of their back. They can still reach up and eat and drink, but it will save lots of wasted feed as well as keep track out of the feeder and waters. That has worked for 80 years.
I sold my mantis for next to nothing because my local guy said not worth fixing a few years ago. Sure wish I would had seen this video sooner. I will certainly be on the look out for another one cause it was great in the garden when the plants started getting bigger. Nice video Bre. Thx
Great result i really enjoy these trash to treasure clips awesome i love seeing machines that people have given up on seeing them run again thats a real buzz
Just a suggestion, wait a few months on Baxter, take some pictures and put him in a pot, hens don't need a rooster to produce eggs. Old guy from south californicated. Thanks for sharing.
I have a BL-100 string trimmer. It never ran right from the factory. I adjusted the jets and the best it would do was to run at part throttle or with the choke part of the way on. Last year the fuel lines disintegrated and the primer bulb gave out. I purchased a the fuel lines and a new Chinese carburetor for about $17. It runs like it should now.
Really loved seeing the carb repair on the Mantis. You made it look easy. Thanks for the video. P.S. Your really going to enjoy raising the chicks. Talk to them regularly and when they are older they will come to you when you call.
Bre, another great video. I love how excited you get about reviving these 2 strokes. One correction though....I believe that Mantis no longer gives lifetime warranty on the tines. This changed a couple of years ago.
We have a couple Mantis Tillers and laugh at the lifetime tines. My father had Jonsenreds made in Sweden, gravely tractors, Troy bilt tillers and echo weed eaters. All solid, time tested equipment.
I love chickens. We have 20. Three are roosters, I could do without them, but the kids love them, and they do look out for the flock somewhat. Words of wisdom: get some good electric net fence and a good energizer. I prefer not to fool with the solar powered ones unless I have no power within 50ft. Keep a good ground. Second, if you are friends with any tree service guys, get a loads of wood chips dumped out there in the chicken pen. Throw your table scraps and chick weed, garden waste, lawn clippings, fall leaves, dead deer, raccoons, etc., out on the wood chips. The chickens will scratch it down and make a worm farm out of it. Boom, raised garden bed compost soil! Our 20 chickens can work down about two of my one ton dump truck loads in a year. It would be better if I had barriers up to keep them from scratching the chips out in the grass, but it works well nonetheless. BTW, if you love asparagus like me, reclaim those dead deer and varmint bones after composting and put them on your asparagus beds. Bonemeal is the best fertilizer for asparagus, but bones and chicken treated wood chips is my choice! That is one big rooster, I would make dinner out of him if he is too hard on the hens.
One can compare the Mantis engines with the Swedish Volomotors B-18 and B-20. They were made to run like perpetual motion machines. // Jerry from Sweden. The hoodie you are wearing with the Husqvara logo has an Island around it. It belongs to our coat of arms in Örebro.
I have had my Mantis for 13 years now, and it still kicks ass! My favorite parts of this vid are when Bre gets excited when the Poulan & Mantis pop off and start running. I do the SAME thing when I get a friends' small engine running. Feels good! Good to see the little "Ckickanic's" running around too, Lol. Great vid, Bre. 👍
May I suggest getting some plastic single edge razor blades from Amazon with blade holders for about 6 dollars. Lots of uses for then when scratching plastic or aluminum surfaces. Good for scraping bug guts ( spatter for more sensitive folks). Useful for scraping off old decals too. I learn something new from every video. Thanks.
Great video Bre!! Love that old equipment!! NICE gift! It's SO satisfying when an old machine fires back to life!! I love my old Sears tractors. They were actually built to WORK!! Unlike the plastic and tin ones you get today!!
I love my chickens! The batch I have now started as babies last year. My Border Terrier raises them when they're itty bitty. @N.MillersCustomStuff @NancysBareFootBackYard I have some beautiful Buff Orpingtons. Watch out... They like to get broody sometimes. Mine are NOT lazy food trough hangers. Don't get between a Buff Orpington and their food though. My girls are awesome!
4:05. Just for safety and just in case. Long hair should be tied back in case it falls forward onto the rotating chain or parts. Even on startup. It only takes a few seconds and whapp it can pull the hair into the saw. I've heard of gruesome injuries happen this way on individuals with long hair getting caught in rotating components and they were experienced. Shortcuts can cost one a limb or unwanted injuries. All in all still a great video
You're the best. I could watch your videos all day. I wish I could fix them like you. It never seems to be so simple when I do it. Love ya. Keep up the good work.
I have owned many Poulan saws and they were so inexpensive I would just buy a new one every year. The ones made in Mexico were pretty good but when they switched to making them in China, they only lasted a few hours of operating time and were no longer worth buying. I have had 3 Jonsereds and a Stihl MS 250 for over 3 years and they have been trouble free. I love the Jonsereds and have used them for commercial timber cutting. They are made of metal and have plenty of power and just about start every time even after sitting on the shelf all winter. In three years they have never been serviced and still run perfectly.

Cute chickens 🐔
Cute little chicks. That's the only way is to be self-sufficient.
We have a couple Mantis Tillers and laugh at the lifetime tines. My father had Jonsenreds made in Sweden, gravely tractors, Troy bilt tillers and echo weed eaters. All solid, time tested equipment.
Those Mantis tillers are great. My mom had one because she couldn't use my big heavy CRT Sears tiller. 😊
Still watching from across the pond and still enjoy watching the repairs and advice magic,Happy days
Congrats on getting the Mantis going and on your new chicks. Buff Orpington are the friendliest chickens and great dual purpise birds.
I love the trash to treasure videos.
I have that same Poulan chain saw. It's been sitting for over 10 years. Gonna be a lot of work getting it right.
Buff's are the best bird. Friendly and loving. Not to mention the eggs!
Thanks.
One of the best videos I have ever seen. Learned little trick about the diaphragm and gasket placement I didn't know. Thanks Girl.
Lol your smile when you get the engine running 😊
I'm new here, watched about 10 videos, & you've already saved me money..thank you very much 😊
I ran across your video and am digging my old mantis out of the backyard. Time for new parts.
Great video Bre!! Love that old equipment!! NICE gift! It's SO satisfying when an old machine fires back to life!! I love my old Sears tractors. They were actually built to WORK!! Unlike the plastic and tin ones you get today!!
Perfect timing on this video cuz I’m getting ready to put a kit in my echo trimmer. Great tillers by the way. 👍
I love my chickens!
The batch I have now started as babies last year.
My Border Terrier raises them when they're itty bitty.

I have some beautiful Buff Orpingtons.
Watch out... They like to get broody sometimes.
Mine are NOT lazy food trough hangers. Don't get between a Buff Orpington and their food though.
My girls are awesome!
miss my moms mantis tiller......we used it for years...she would cut our "invisible fence" with it... and it still ran great
You know you got it when you get it!
I love my Poulan. It cuts more than limbs and lasted 15 years.
That laugh when it started made my whole day!!
You are SUPER-FUN to watch! I'm hooked.
Best outdoor equipment tutorials on youtube.....well done!
