    Your advice about studying the cert material in order to understand it as opposed to just passing the test is spot on!
    Collecting a bunch of certs will help you filter your way through the applicant tracking systems. They might even get you through the HR/recruiter gatekeepers! But sooner or later, when the day finally comes for you to stand tall before the hiring manager, you better know how to apply that knowledge ;).
    I wish you all the best!

    I have a BAS in Cybersecurity, am currently in an IT job, have an internship under my belt, and am actively pursuing my Security+ and OSCP and haven’t received 1 interview in nearly 300 job applications. I include my résumé and a cover letter. How is it so difficult to even get an interview in a field that’s considered “in-demand”? My professors told me getting a job in my field would be like throwing a dart at a dartboard. Even if I don’t land the perfect Cyber job instantly, it’s very easy to get something -- WRONG. GETTING AN ENTRY LEVEL CYBERSECURITY JOB IS IMPOSSIBLE. EMPLOYERS THESE DAYS WANT 5+ YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, A DEGREE, AND AT LEAST 1 CERTIFICATION FOR ENTRY LEVEL. I went to school just for this and can’t get an entry level job no matter what I do. Fuck this industry man so frustrated

    • @xCheddarB0b42x
      @xCheddarB0b42x 8 місяців тому +14

      Make sure to run your resume through an applicant tracking system (ATS) checker. Revise the resume draft to include more keywords from the post to increase the ATS score. But do not lie.
      Further, the lack of a completed Security+ might be getting you dumped at first glance. I would pause applying, refocus on completing Security+, then reengage the applicant process once Sec+ is in hand.
      Good luck. It can be done.

    • @nathanhargenrader645
      @nathanhargenrader645 8 місяців тому +13

      As someone who moved from a regular help desk position to a entry level security analyst this just isnt true. Or at least the experience part isn’t. There are a couple things I can’t tell you right now you are doing wrong. If you don’t have your security + or any other certs in security, right there you have significantly lowered your chances. It probably also doesn’t have any projects. Your resume honestly probably just sucks.
      Yes jobs put they want 5 years or exp and all that nonsense but the truth is that is the ideal candidate. They understand in most cases they won’t get that person. Just try and highlight as many of your security and it skills as possible and polish everything up with a good cert or two.
      Probably ditch the cover letter. That is a mistake unless you are capable or writing a killer one. Chances are it isn’t helping you.
      And yes a degree is completely useless these days pretty much. Most positions would rather you have security + and no degree. However many jobs look at a security degree more or less equally so if you are still not getting calls most likely you aren’t properly highlighting the skills you picked up from your degree.

    Something I want to bring up about the not applying to enough jobs topic is that where I live there doesnt seem to be anywhere near as many entry level cyber security analyst jobs as people make it out to be. I would go on hiring sites and look for open positions that fit what im looking for, but it would be like 5 max. So at that point after applying to those 5, my only option is to apply to a job thats 2 hours away from my house which im not willing to do. And in my currently living situation, working remotely isnt a good option.

      Devs should be able to slide into security without doing the weird trad IT route of help desk, network admin, sysadmin, security. In fact, your knowledge of how things work would be good for malware detonation, or dynamic analysis, and also reverse engineering the malware samples.

    five reason, I do Not want a Cyber security job. 1. Long hours 2. Reporting to ten different mangers (most of which have no IT experience or pretend to) 3. Endless requirements for reports and attending meetings with managers. 4. Working with millennials, worst dealing with some bone-head from India that barely speaks English. 5. Being on call 24 hours a day, see number 1. Finally, constant need to keep learning new skills, and the massive amount of time, spent learning all those skills, knowledge, building labs, just to keep up on your job. When people in other industry just get a degree and work for 30 years and actually take weekend off and do not think about spending all weekend in a dark room, learning some new hacking skills....and at 7:03 in the video he hits on the a huge reason why all IT sucks.
