This is so comprehensive. Being South African everyone just assumes I'd pick it up or understand our national sport. Problem is, no one every bothered explaining wtf was going on and what each position involved. Great video, wish I'd had something like this growing up.

In college, 45 years ago, I played Semi-Pro soccer $75 for a win, $35 for a loss). One day, getting ready for a game I watched the end of a rugby game. Watching that game, I was convinced that I was playing the wrong game! I've been a fan ever since but never had the fortune to get to play a game. I enjoyed the '95 Spring Bucks and loved invictus!

I’ve been a fan of rugby since I saw the World Cup on TV in 2007. I wasn’t familiar with the laws and the flow of the game at first. As an American who didn’t grow up with rugby but is a fan, I’ve read many websites, and watched many videos and matches. This is one of the most thorough and clearly demonstrated videos on rugby that I’ve seen. I highly recommend it.

I'm an American and I love watching the game. I first got introduced to it in the mid 1970's but never knew the rules. Your explanation really helps and I can now enjoy it more. I record the games on the Canadian channels and play it in slow motion so I can really see and understand the moves. It's far better than watching American football 😛

I played Rugby League (a similar but ultimately different game) in my youth but I would love to learn to be able to play Rugby. Rugby League is more fun to watch (IMHO) but Rugby seems more fun to play and has less potential for serious head injury. These are the two main attributes that attract me to it.
The trouble is learning the game of Rugby. It's a lot harder to learn the game of Rugby than it is to learn the game of Rugby League. I wish they had Rugby in my area when I was growing up so I could've learned how to play it in my youth.

Don't feel stupid! It actually takes a couple of years to REALLY learn the rules especially for chaotic situations after tackles and in scrums & mauls. Played this wonderful sport for almost 40 yrs and made many great friends and memorable parties. There's a rowdy culture of song & drink after matches that makes rugby players "blood brothers (& sisters) world wide!!

Best summary I've seen and am sending it out to frie ds who are curious. Only two important things missing, I believe:
    1. Kicking out to touch from a penalty
    2. Illegal tackling (high, spear, etc.)

    • @cybertrophic
      @cybertrophic 4 роки тому +1

Raúl Escalante illegal tackles are part of “Foul Play” under the laws: he covers this. He does get the free kick wrong, though - you can kick for touch and will have the lineout, but he only spoke about kicking infield or what happens if you kick it off the end of the pitch.
He also missed the 22 dropout, calling a mark from a received kick, a defender grounding the ball in their own in-goal area and a few other things (penalty tries, 5-yard scrums and a few other minor points).

@@cybertrophic Thanks, Chance, good point. Although growing very quickly in Mx, rugby is still largely misunderstood and maligned as barbaric. I feel that explaining all the measures taken in revising the laws to make play safer in a casual manner would help to change this.
Another way in which I think it would improve the TV spectator experience, which I believe is largely the purpose for videos like this, is explaining bookings and sending-offs for dangerous tackles which had such dramatic impact in both this World Cup and the last.
All that said, I think it's a wonderful video!

Raúl Escalante in fairness, this is a relatively old video, so the RWC isn’t really a factor.
There is a reason Rugby has Laws and not Rules - it originated in public schools (which are, oddly, the elite schools traditionally attended by the sons of aristocracy and the wealthy upper classes), so there is an idea of “being a gentleman” and doing the right thing that is assumed to underpin all things in rugby.
It was famously described as a sport for barbarians played by gentlemen, which is about right - the idea was to get all the energy and aggression out of students who were at boarding school, to ensure they didn’t have any left to start fights or get into trouble... 😂

Really well explained and to the point. Rugby seems to have a lot in common with American football which is also a very stop/start game. I prefer real football though. Because you can't see the ball in rugby half the time. Once they all get in a scrum or fall over each other on the ground you can't see who is fouling who and where the ball is and it makes it hard to follow.
