    At age 69 I spent the night in Batad. I even walked to the waterfalls, which is quite treacherous. Three months later I found out that I had cancer that had metastasized to both lungs, I’m doing ok right now and would like to do it again at age 72.

    Did it feel like you travelled 2000 years back in time as you meandered through the narrow paths and the small villages? I can just imagine each of those volcanic rocks used for the retaining walls being carried by the ancient Ifugaos that carved the sides of those mountains to turns them into the magnificent terraces.

    Thank you Jason for this lovely video of Batad. Your video brings back memories of my trip to Batad/Ifugao about 30 years ago. Starting from Batad I made a 3-day trek with a local school teacher. We slept in local peoples houses which gave me an insight into the lives of the local people. They all were very friendly. I remember, we brought salt, tobacco and biscuits as presents for the people. Unforgettable memories.

    Thanks for the memories of this incredible one day hike to the falls and back. I did this precisely ten years ago in 2010 when I was 58 years old with a a small group of travellers younger than myself. I must admit that I challenged myself to beat those younger people back up that steep hillside to the top which I did. However in the jeepney on that extremely bumpy drive back to Banaue I started suffering such horrendous pain in my lower back that I had to get out and lay on the road awhile. I ended up in the Banaue hospital overnight. Heat exhaustion may have been the cause or perhaps dehydration from the intense sweating of the hike. Forever etched in my memory bank as one of the great hikes along with the hike up to Machu Picchu etc

      You should have rested for some minutes and not trekked it nonstop. Even us who live there have to admit that we can never beat those long, narrow winding paths.
      BTW, i had never visited that place but we have a similar rice terrace and mountain view in my parents hometown.

  • @MrNaysh

    I was there in the late 90s and huts had traditional roof thatching and blended with the environment. The huts built since use corrugated metal which makes it an eyesore in the middle of this pristine place.

    • @sabrinawanderer7560
      @sabrinawanderer7560 4 роки тому +1

      Yeah as much as i'd like to preserve the native houses built out of dried grasses, i'm not in the position to change the minds of our politicians. Money is more important and well, it's the houseowners' right to modernize their thatched roofs and wooden walls..
      But if i were to maintain the beauty and the genuine beauty of Banaue, i would choose to preserve ancient native houses as they were built before by my ancestors.
      I love to cherish memories that would bring me inspiration and a sense of connectedness to antics used by my ancient forefathers.

    • @katyagrad3704
      @katyagrad3704 4 роки тому

      Hmmm... It's a source of personal conflict for me how one who lives with all the convenience of modern age, technology and science, can judge indigenous communities for wanting to enjoy a few of these benefits for themselves... It's great that preservation of culture is advocated, but in this case, maybe let the indigenous communities decide what they want themselves

    • @MrNaysh
      @MrNaysh 4 роки тому

      What I meant was that using corrugated metal means it's a step back because it makes it look like "informal settler" because it rusts and bends. If you use thatched roof then it's more traditional keeping it more in line with the indigenous culture. It's aesthetic blends better with the environment.

    • @katyagrad3704
      @katyagrad3704 4 роки тому +1

      @@MrNaysh There are reasons why they chose corrugated sheets for roofing material. Less labor intensive, less costly, easier to place... which are all valid reasons. Yes, we people from the mountains, love tradition, but we are not averse to using modern conveniences, especially if practical. And yes, aesthetics suffer, but try explaining that to people who can only spare enough for GI sheets.

    Thank you for visiting Batad. I'm from here and I grew up here before I moved to the city of Baguio, the summer capital of the Philippines which is over a hundred kms away from Banaue. My mother's souvenir shop along the road to the jeepney station is the first stop when you're from the village. You probably seen her. When I was a kid, I always go with my mother every weekend to sell souvenirs to the tourists. A thing I always miss childhood memory.

    At 17:10/18:23, you said, "It's been one of the hardest days of walking I ever had."
    Hmm! Have you hiked into the Grand Canyon as I did twice in my lifetime? 4.5 hours to get down to the River from South Rim, a 9-hour slog back up the next day, after spending the night looking up at the FANTASTIC display of stars making up the Milky Way directly overhead.
    Or, in the UK, attempt the Swanage to Lulworth Cove of the West Coast Path?
    I guess I can only look back at nearly 70 years of age with nostalgia.
    Another excellent video and I admire how you can keep your balance on that narrow ledge overlooking that sheer drop. Well done, and keep up the good work.
