  • In 2004 the world was introduced to the 'fishapod', Tiktaalik - a transitional animal with features of both fish and land creatures. Found at about the same time was Qikiqtania - a cousin of Tiktaalik but with anatomy that suggested only a tentative flirtation with the land.
THOMAS STEWART is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Pennsylvania State University who was one of the first biologists to study these amazing creatures and present them to the world.

What led to the basic body plan and how it "adapts" to the needs of different individual species is a fascinating research question. Another great interview. Thank you.
    Addendum: Also, great visuals.

@@EvolutionSoup If only they'd known how much we'd want to know how and when they first walked on land, maybe they'd have made their own videos about it. One small step for a tetrapodomorph, one giant leap for mankind.😄

Great discussion - - Evolution Soup has been, and continues to be, a highly informative channel. I appreciate the graphics that are incorporated into these discussions. With regard to something specific to this episode: Prof. Stewart is so right on getting the agreement and involvement of the Indigenous Peoples for these projects, and (37:23) - also important - communicating the findings back to them in their own language. Wow, now that's ethical science.
Oh, and the statement (40:10) on studying soft-tissue adaptations, particularly those associated with the eye in moving from a watery environment to dry land, is fascinating.
Many thanks for Mark's ongoing efforts of science communication and education. Well done, man.

Great new taxon. Very informative. Please add late-surviving Trypanognathus and kin to the next cladogram.

Are there multiple fish species that did this? This definitely seems like something multiple fish species would do to fill in such an open niche
