I read some of Buzzati’s short stories when I was studying Italian a few years ago and found them very intriguing. If I ever get around to reading the tartar steppe , I’ll probably read it in English. Thanks for the review.
Thank you so much for the review! This is one of my favorite books!! I agree with you on some of the major themes, but I think it takes on something much bigger than everyday work and boredom. It takes on death and makes it a psychological journey using military and locations as a simple example for meaning or lack of meaning within life. He has similarities to Kafka, but I think this book is much more successful than The Castle by Kafka. I read the English translation and found it quite beautiful in the way it was written. The movie adaptation was also very successful in its telling of the story. It does leave out some things and has a more challenging time conveying the characters' inner emotions. The adventure, journey, and battle are all within the mind, so I found it quite thrilling!
I really would love to hear your thoughts on Thomas the Obscure by Maurice Blanchot! An utterly mind-bending novella; truly a work of introspective genius.
Hello Mr Bookchemist, I am reading 'Solenoid' by Mircea Cartarescu, I believe that you would enjoy his work. Have you read any of it? There are very few english translations of his work, but maybe in Italian? I am reading it in spanish, and it is amazing.
I would be really interested in your perspective on the concept of "Hysterical Realism". You already made a lot of videos on postmodern literature and James Wood coined the term with the intention to criticize many aspects of that trend. Maybe you could do a similar video to that on "Magical Realism". But it is just a suggestion.
Totally off-topic but how was your experience of Euro final in England as an Italian? Congratulations for the win. We were supporting Italy in Mumbai, no surprises there :)
Such a painful night!! I spent the penalty shots on the floor in tears! (My English colleagues were gloating hubristically all week before the final - I think they were a bit too confident they'd win :P)

I've heard many people talk very, very highly about him - but somehow I've never been intrigued! Good luck with the book, I hear it's supposed to be quite tough!

Did you say that reading Buzzati in original Italian is difficult? Thanks
(I can read easy Italian: eg Leonardo Sciascia.)

buzzati's short stories are so so beautiful
Thanks for providing some insights on these books. I always enjoy reading Italian novelists but sometimes lack knowledge of Italian history.
Thank you for the review and thoughts. I'll definitely check this one out.
Definitely a source of inspiration for George RR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" and its Wall and Night's Watch.
Don´t know if you like Calcio, but congrats on the Euro title my friend!!!
Nice Ringo Starr haircut, Matt. I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while (and watch the film too), so thank you for another insightful review.
Always a joy to learn about Italian literature from this channel.
Curious if the film adaptation is any good (there are a lot of stars).

"A little bit of a high-brow whining session" hahaha love that. I can think of a few other novels to which this would also apply.

Have you read anything by Antonio Moresco? I'm looking forward to reading Canti del Caos some time in the near future

@@TheBookchemist Questo commento meriterebbe un pollice verso, ma rivedere la tua maglietta in questo video m'ha messo di buonumore.
