Scottie & RJ have a BEEFY history

  • 5 years before they became teammates in Toronto, RJ Barrett and Scottie Barnes were two of the most decorated high school basketball players of all time. In fact, RJ Barrett played his final high school game ever against Scottie Barnes, and the results were not what you might expect.
    Pendance Passes Sales link: filmfreeway.com/Pendance/tickets
Let's Paint the picture. This is RJ Barrett, a Canadian superhero who was a senior at Montverde, committed to play at Duke, son of Canadian basketball royalty Rowan Barrett, the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Player of the Year, Naismith Player of the Year, Gatorade player of the Year and Morgan Wootten Player of the Year. He... had a big resume.
He was the number 1 ranked player in the nation, playing for the number 1 ranked team in the nation, flanked by a talented backcourt duo of Michael Devoe and Andrew Nembhard. RJ's Montverde team was STACKED - Head coach Kevin Boyle who'd coached the Eagles with players like Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid opined that the 17-18 Montverde Eagles might be his most talented team.. ever.
On the other hand, you had Scottie Barnes & Vernon Carey leading the University School - a team which started out the season unranked but had risen to third throughout a dominant campaign by Barnes & Carey and managed to end the year ranked third.
Scottie's Sharks had beaten #2 ranked OAK Hill while Barrett'S Eagles had bested Findlay Prep to set up an ALL-FLORIDA National Championship. If people didn't know who Scottie was to start the year, they were about to find out.
The game started close but by halftime an Andrew Nembhard layup pushed it to 35-26. Barnes started out the third quarter by hitting a corner 3. As Raptor fans today know, Scottie Barnes is known for dominant second halfs, and he definetly wasn't about to let his team lose. On the very next play, Barrett shown some stage presence by hitting a 3 of his own. Not to be bested, Barnes went down the other end and went up for a layup. He came down awkwardly as he came down on a teammates foot but ever the warrior and fighter... Barnes stayed in the game.
He didn't quit, but with Barnes now favoring his ankle, and the score 31-38, the Eagles sensed blood. Closing the third quarter, the score had ballooned to 41-59 before Scottie found Carey for a wide open 3 after drawing a triple team.
The fourth quarter was more of the same but Scottie didn't go down without a technical and a few choice words for Barrett, who ended his high school career with a National Championship to complete a storied prep career which already included a Gold Medal in the U-17 FIBA Championship with Canada.
The commentators who were clearly familiar with both players spent most of the fourth quarter commending Barnes and painting a bright picture of his future.
Barrett was the better player on the better team that day - and before Zion Williamson and Ja Morant blew up, he was the projected number 1 pick in the following year's draft. Maple Mamba had won.
And it was Barnes who transfered to Montverde to effectively replace RJ's vacant spot in the front court 2 years later for the Eagles when he went on to team with Cade Cunningham to form what many call the greatest high school team of all time.
Barnes and Barrett would both go on to have impressive collegiate careers at Duke and FLorida State University in 2018 and 2020 respectively, and both would go on to be top 5 picks in the NBA- Barnes going fourth to the Raptors and RJ going third to the Knicks.
Over the years they've spent time guarding each other, and RJ even had a HUGE buzzer beating dunk over Scottie's Raptors less than a year ago to send the Knicks to overtime.
A year later, they're teammates for RJ's hometown Toronto Raptors after the Raptors traded Scottie's best friend on the team OG Anunoby. Scottie for his part doesn't quite seem to be completely over it.
There's a concept that great players can sharpen each other. 2 FORMER McDonald's All Americans, Gold medalists, prep school legends, both of whom have taken their share of media backlash, both have had highs and lows. RJ Barrett was seen by many Knicks fans as a bust - and Scottie Barnes after winning Rookie of the Year and becoming a media darling spent most of the 2022-2023 season being the whipping boy for a disappointing season in Toronto. They both have a lot to prove. AND alongside 24-year-old Immanuel Quickley, the trio could be the building blocks for the Raptors next championship.

    • @MRBp2024
      @MRBp2024 4 місяці тому +9

No that's just flat out wrong.
If you watched the game you would know that Scottie said that in Overtime.
RJ dunk happened at the end of the 4th quarter.
Also it was a response to Grimes using his elbow to push Siakam backwards and trying to mean mug him.
That's when Scottie got in his face to tell 'he's not him'.
      Scottie was right. How's a nobody shoving a 2x All-star, 2x All-NBA player in Siakam, like he's a somebody.
Also Scottie was trolling & taunting the Knicks crowd in that 4th quarter.
RJ did dunk on Scottie, but Scottie kept the same energy in Overtime and made winning plays to win the game.
Grimes situation happened after, so unrelated to RJ.
RJ you could say got Scottie for him taunting the crowd, not for what Grimes did.
Scottie unlike Grimes is a somebody. Scottie was an elite prospect & winner at every level.
In NBA was a ROTY winner, now he's playing at an All-star level averaging efficient 20-9-6.
Grimes is a bench player now.

Beefy can mean substantial, large. It can also mean controversial or full of animosity. It can be used to describe a soup or stew.

    Great video!!!
Scottie went Montverde 2 years after.
It was the 17/18 season, national championship game.
Montverde then failed to win the title the following season after RJ left with Cade, Moody and co.
They then recruited Scottie for 19/20 season, forming that dominant 25-0 team who unfortunately didn't end up getting a chance to go for the title (Covid year).
I doubt Scottie would have agreed to join Montverde immediately after seeing his team lose to Montverde in the championship game.
They likely had to convince him to join.
Scottie very deliberate with his career & what he wants.
(He only went FSU cause of them allowing him to run point guard)
The fact Montverde didn't win the title that year & the team is different from RJ team helps.
When RJ got traded, one of the first things I thought of was how Scottie feels about it.
From what we know about Scottie is he doesn't forget.
Scottie went after RJ & Knicks last season.
    Now there teammates...
As much as Scottie is a nice guy he must feel conflicted seeing a fierce rival on his team.
Even Masai when talking about the trade he didn't really make it seem like RJ was what he wanted & the Raptors future.
It seemed more like he was a throw in & Masai spoke on it like he's the Canadian kid coming back home (good for TV+tickets).
Masai with Quickley mentioned him being a perfect fit with Scottie.
I hope RJ + Scottie can put aside that highschool 'rivalry' & become good friends, develop together and bring a championship back to Toronto.
Scottie, RJ, Quickley, Gradey, (Hopefully Jarace Walker), is pretty good young core.

So thinking Siakam should be traded makes Raptor fans weasels???
Is keeping Siakam going to guarantee Raptors a championship or to be a contender? No
So why should Raptors hold onto a 30 year old player, looking for a max, who operates in same spots as the young franchise player.
      Make it make sense.
Warriors moved on from Iguodala who helped them win multiple championship, make multiple finals, he was an NBA finals MVP.
If it was up to you, Derozan would still be a Raptor and Raptors would be ringless.
Masai moved on from Derozan contract in that Kawhi trade, he wanted him moved.
Masai wants to do the same with Siakam.
Siakam wants a bag, he's not chasing titles.
But you want to keep him when his ambition isn't to win a title.
He's comfortable, he already won. He cares about personal accolades & making money.
Otherwise he would have tried to force a move away in order to try win a title.
Siakam wants to stay, he's comfy in Canada.
Siakam had his chance to lead the team.
Raptors have a 5 year sample size with Siakam as number 1 option.
From age 25 to soon 30.
In that window. He was given the keys to an optimal roster who just won an NBA title.
Siakam had great regular season & horrible bubble playoffs.
Siakam was the worst performing no.1 option those playoffs.
Raptors in spite of Siakam awful play were still 1 possession away from making an Eastern Conference finals (Likely NBA final).
Had the Raptors boxed out and not let Tatum grab an offensive rebound on a missed FT late in Game 7 that led to Tatum to draw more FT's.
Raptors would have won. Raptors in the end lost with FVV missing a deep 3 to try tie the game, with rookie Grant Williams grazing the shot, blocking it.
Siakam in that Boston series only need to play Solid and Raptors would have potential been in an NBA finals.
Siakam played beyond awful, he let down the entire team.
That was Siakam closest shot to doing anything in the playoffs since he became the number 1 option & he was playing against the team with his bad play.
Siakam 4 full seasons as no.1 option.
      Year 1:
Had stacked reigning NBA champion team, great regular season.
Siakam was great in regular season.
A 2nd round playoff exit, with Siakam the reason they failed, he was a complete no show in playoffs.
      Year 2:
Siakam came into the next season in Tampa playing awful, had disaster start to the season, beefing Nick Nurse, dropping stinkers, missing game winners, missing layups in the clutch, disaster season.
In what was Raptors only losing season in the last 10 years (no playoffs).
      Year 3:
Masai gave Siakam another chance. Scottie was drafted. Team was playing great without Siakam to start the season. OG was averaging 22 PPG to start, rookie Scottie 18 PPG, team was winning games.
Siakam cameback, team started losing but adjusted.
Siakam had a strong finish to the season.
      1st round playoff exit.
Siakam had a good overall playoffs, however a complete no show in the most important game of the series, at home down 2-0 in a winnable game that came down to OG/Precious missed FT in 4th, forcing Overtime, Embiid OT game winner.
Siakam had solid series, no show in biggest game.
      Year 4:
Siakam has great All-NBA calibre season, great individual season.
      Play-in exit.
Siakam had a monster play-in game, however he was the one who missed clutch FT to save the season.
Siakam got lucky getting 3 FT's in dying seconds for a wrong call on a 3 point foul on the way up.
He however missed, season ending on his missed FT's.

Great video, Rob. They're both such talented players and well-suited to Darko's offence (as is Quickley). The decision-making on the offensive end has been so much quicker since the trade. I feel optimism going into each game with this group that I haven't felt since the 2019-2020 season. OG is a wonderful player, but fit matters so much. I do think he would fit on this team too of course, but getting two good fits for one is huge.
