I am an EE myself, I can follow the topic well, but have never build something like this. This inspire me to go and build it myself, in a Cake Pan or just on the table, step by step. I love listening to the homebrew tube (valve) AM nets on 80m here in the UK and hope to build another transmitter soon. A nicely thought out circuit. A scope trace when fully modulated would be interesting, particularly if you include a 100 to 5 kHz frequency sweep and a trapezoidal trace.
I'm most interested in the 6AQ5 oscillator design thoughts. You've provided enough of a teaser. But not enough (to my mind) to use a datasheet and design it. I've noticed what I believe to be a self-bias (grid-leak) of grid 1 (the 47k) but the cathode is directly grounded. So this means it's not operated according to the datasheet (there's a note about this saying 'an adequate cathode bias resistor' is required and it's been my modest experience the note is true enough. This is a unique arrangement that I'm not familiar with, though. So I'd like to know why it's fine to simply ground the cathode in this case.

If I’m reading your schematic correctly, you have 400 volts DC on your microphone PTT. Yikes. I use optoisolators to remove HV from the keys of my boat anchors. Is there another way using your schematic to key the microphone without keying the B+?
Does anyone know if that 13H choke is just the primary of a single ended output transformer with the secondary disconnected or is it a power supply choke? I don't see it in the video.
Thanks for the reply, the reason I asked as there was a Knight Kit radio broadcaster in the late 50's that used a output transformer but when I looked at the video all I saw was 2 black wires on the underside of your chassis making me think you used a filter choke.@@iainportalupi
@@billybaroo7873 I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t use one winding on a transformer instead of a power choke. A cheap power transformer is easier to find than a choke.
Great video, Iain. You did a nice job with the presentation as well as with the construction. What are the other home brew items there in the shack? I operate QRP but use CW. What frequency do you normally operate on, I'd like to hear the home brew AM xmtr on the air. Also, what type of antenna are you using there? I'm using a delta loop. All the best OM. 73 de WA4CHQ
I’m using an end fed antenna cut for 3885 which is where I hang out the most. As for the other homebrew items, I’ve got a 70w AM/CW transmitter, a morse code practice oscillator, and a 30w linear amp for the cake pan transmitter. 73 KB1UGN
Don't be afraid to fail. Just don't electrocute yourself so you live to experiment again. You WILL sacrifice a LOT of components in trade for gaining of knowledge.

Im curious why you went with an L type tuning output. There is no loading control. Are you going for maximum output so there’s no need for loading?
@@ebones6957 it was mainly for space savings since the cake pan is only so big and I couldn’t fit another variable capacitor on there.
