@@WeaponDetective FYI, you can have access to all the tech you want. But if you lack the institutional experience and infrastructure/supply chains such data is not that useful. Just like with Chinese jet engine technology, Chinese stealth tech is decades behind the West because they only started developing it (along with the local institutional experience, infrastructure/supply chains) in the last 20 or so years. Again this isn't a knock against China, its just how development of such advanced technologies work. Finally, stealth is not and never about radar invisibility it about detection verses weapons lock. Stealth makes planes very hard to get weapons lock at ranges above 20+ miles, usually less depend on the plane and combat conditions. So often times you can detect stealth air craft up to 100 miles away under some conditions. But its always intermittent and very weak making weapons lock or sometimes even vectoring your planes toward it very hard or impossible until the stealth planes gets much much closer.

One of the largest criticisms is the canards. Whilst not ideal for VLO, they actually deflect upwards and don’t move during flight except to take off and land. Added to the fact they are made completely of composites and have a layer of RAM, they would be negligible to the frontal RCS.
But the biggest benefit is the carnard+delta layout generates 1.8x the lift of a regular design like the F22. This is the reason so many designs like the Rafale/Eurofighter/Gripen/J10/Lavi all adopted the carnard+delta in some combination. This makes sense if you want to achieve the longest range for a theatre like the pacific. The F35 was a compromise design which is not good at anything and is not fit for the distances of the pacific. That is why the USAF is desperately trying to get the NGAD program off the ground.
The J20 probably has the most powerful fighter sized radar as well. Its combination of massive nose and huge electrical power means it can support a giant radar (1M diameter and 2x 160kw engines). I feel the USAF boxed itself in with the single engine F35 and its much smaller nose (0.7M diameter and 191kw engine)
But in saying this, the VLO qualities of each aircraft will probably negate the radar and thermal tracking might be more important at those ranges 80km

The secrecy is the same for all Chinese platforms, not helping that the few public videos released are in Chinese and often hard to find on the other side of the Great firewall..
Sinodefenceforum is probably the best open source in English if you want to keep up with what they are doing over there. There are a few inside sources with proven track records that leak info now and then but compared to The U.S and most other military's it is a black box. Wikipedia should be taken with a truck load of salt when it comes to the PLA, often being wrong or outdated compared to the census in the OSINT China watcher community.
One common thing over the last 15 years is that they are very cautious with new designs, starting with very low production numbers and making changes along the way (sometimes leading to a whole new model).
Only when they got a design they are happy with do they crank up the production, they reached that point only in the last year or two so with the J20. The latest inside rumor on the J-20 production is that they will out produce the F-35 this year which would mean more then 97 planes, (F35 production will be lower this year then normal).

I think most mistaken beliefs or judgments of the J-20 is due to a fundamental misunderstanding of its role, though with one caveat. It's not positioned as an air-superiority or agile dogfighter in the style of the F-22, but much closer to a longer range, stealthy, almost missile truck like the F-35, and is very much designed with China's primary threat in mind: long range strike against US super-carriers in the Pacific. The one caveat is whether that design philosophy is correct, or whether the low priority given to dogfighting (not even a cannon) will be a fatal weakness, like the F-4 in Vietnam.

Its believed the Chinese Airforce does not want its pilots getting into dogfights and especially not with US/Western fighter planes/pilot. So the gun was kept out (along with there being no gun pod for either the J-20 or coming J-35 seen so far) of plane to save weight, extend range, increase weapon load and remove the temptation for dog fights. Which is also very in line with old school Soviet/Russian air combat doctrine, which the Chinese Airforce is based on. This is not a knock against Chinese pilots, just the PLAN being astute and conservative in its thinking. If for no other reason the US/West pilots have more combat experience so why bother risking their expensive 5th gen fighters in dogfights that probably won't happen anyway. As Chinese air combat doctrine is to fire off large numbers of PL-15's and later the coming PL-21's at long ranges (Chinese fighters like Russian ones have longer ranges than current US/Western fighters) in Beyond Visual Range Missile fights (aka BVRM), then retire from from the field aka Return to Base (RTB). That is why frontal stealth was prioritized on both the J-20 and the coming J-35 (which I hope is called something other than 35 as that would get confusing, even calling it 36 would be better) for long range BVRM fights before RTBing. In fact the only reason they have PL-10 IR short range within visual range missiles is in case some how the US/Western stealth fighters get close enough for WVRM fights. Which is unlikely as US doctrine also prefers staying at BVRM range and once BVRM missiles are exhausted RTBing. Though because of the bad experiences from Vietnam, the USAF have a gun on the F-22 and F-35A, while the F-35B/C have attachable gun pod (not unlike the ones put on early F-4's during Vietnam when it was apparent dog fights were still happening), but he gun pod does make F-35B/C less stealthy at range.

Also American 6th Gen prototypes have already flown. The newer conventional technology engines that American's have are even better. The cutting edge stuff that they aren't using in the F-35 push performance even more.
Plus my guestimate is that in 15-20 years a large scale war won't be viable for China with it's demographic and economic issues. Nor are they ready in the next 3-5 years. So actually using the J-20 against American fighters puts it in the NGAD - F/A-XX window.

Chengdu aircraft company has far less political influence then Shenyang aircraft company (which is the licensee builder of Su-27/30 series -- J11, J15, J16), so if Chengdu's product chosen as mainstream asset in PLAAF, it very likely means this product indeed is overwhelmingly superior.

    @minhmeo9506 11 місяців тому +15

J-20 doesn't carry autocannons is not a problem from the Chinese perspective. The J-20 is not envisioned to be used for dogfight; instead, it will use its high speed and stealth to penetrate enemy airspace and attack with precision weapons, or conduct interception of enemy aircraft with air-to-air missiles and then quickly escape.
Once approached by the enemy, the J-20 can be defeated by older fighters, but with the advantage of advance detection (strong radar, stealth design), the pilot will limit that from happening.
It is also important to note the fact that the Chinese have a strategy of using older fighter aircraft to charge first and letting more modern aircraft follow - as witnessed in the Taiwan Strait incidents. In this case, in front of the J-20 will be a large flock of 3rd and 4th generation fighters that will act as pawns protecting the J-20. The enemy will be busy dealing with them, while the J-20s, far behind them, will picking them off one by one.

Have to disagree with Weapon Detective about his statements on radars. The F-35 is actually closer to a bird's eye than a bird itself. Also detecting is not the problem in regards to stealth, it's about getting lock-on and track. Also when switching radars into the lower bands to try to detect stealth there is another monumental problem for radars, they light up like a xmas tree. No joke. Using radars and when to use them is a real strategy nowadays. If a radar operator switches to the x-band to try and look for stealth guess what, the radar operator has about 30 secs to find, track and lock the stealth aircraft through clutter (this includes bees) because an anti-radiation missile has already been fired and is about to land ontop of them. Good luck.

The American professional military magazine "Military Observer" commented: After the Chinese J-20 stealth fighter is equipped with the WS-15 engine, its performance exceeds that of the F22 fighter, forming a crushing trend against the F35 fighter.
The US. once a forerunner in weapon development, is now chasing up with China, and the new AIM-260 could be a copycat of the PL-15 air-to-air missile in terms of applied technologies.
According to estimates from military media in many countries, the actual capability of the PLA's PL-15 air-to-air missile has exceeded 300 kilometers.
The PL-21 is an active radar-guided ultra-long-range air-to-air missile that can shoot down any maneuverable aircraft within a range of 300-500 kilometers. It has the ability to intercepting cruise missiles and remotely destroy enemy early warning aircraft, electronic warfare aircraft, aerial tankers and other special aircraft, fundamentally weakening the opponent's air combat system or even the entire combat system capability, directly change the battlefield pattern. The PL21 is also recognized as the number one air-to-air missile in the world.
Get your facts straight the WS15 has a higher thrust (19T w afterburmer) than the F119 of the F22A (17T w afterburner). With the WS15, the J20B will completely surpass the F22A and the F35A in terms of speed, super cruise(speculated top speed of mach 2.8), AAM(PL-15/21) and maneuverability. It's avionics and radar is better than the F22A and F35A.

If you think the US is behind on electronic warfare, then I’d suggest you examine the capabilities on the new flight of Arleigh Burke destroyers. There is no R&D deficit, just no systems have been selected for production runs until recently. There is no equivalent in either the Russian or Chinese navy to what incoming Arleigh Burkes will be capable of.
      AIM-260 a copy of the PL21? 🤣
China has been heavily funding for a peer-to-peer competition under xi, so I hope they would be ahead in number of production capable items.
As for the radar and electronics, both the F-22 and F-35 are in the midst of upgrades. The F-22 has had no avionics or radar modification since coming into service, so it’s not a surprise that the J-20 has better alternatives.
Engines are also a pointless comparison, both US fighters are derived from the same engine. We’ll see who produces a successful ultra high performance adaptive cycle engine or rotating detonation engine first.

Uhh even the Chinese have admitted their jet engine tech lags behind the West. This isn't a knock against China, since their tech is based on Soviet/Russian engines which also lag behind. But Soviet/Russian jet engine tech is based on difference operational concepts, like low operation flight hours before replacement, higher thrust, simpler, cheaper/easier to manufacture/refurbish at the expense of durability and fuel efficiency. This is because Soviet/Russian engines tech is based on Soviet/Russian defensive rather than offensive fight doctrine, which goes back to the WWII. So Soviet/Russian and Chinese engines are based on high speed, high thrust, but high fuel consumption. Which reduces their combat range if it's still higher than US/Western fighters. China is new to offensive style warfare so it will take time develop jet engines design around that, even the US would need a lot of time if it made major change to its combat doctrine. Something to remember even though the F-22, F-35, J-20 and even the few SU-57's can go above MACH 2, they don't. Because at those speeds you burn off your stealth coatings due to air friction. Its a limitation of stealth technology, even the NGAD is not expected to Super cruise above MACH 1.9 for that reason. In end it doesn't really matter how fast the J-20 can super cruise or even its top speed, it will never go above MACH 1.9 so doesn't burn off its skin. Hence why all stealth bombers are subsonic and no one is trying to make a even a super sonic let alone hypersonic one.
No the AIM-260 is completely different from the PL-15. Again because the US and China have different combat doctrine and use different planes, aka Western style verses Soviet/Russian style. The AIM-260 is the same size as the current AMRRAM so the current US planes like the F-22 and F-35 combat load is the same as before and doesn't require any modifications to the aircraft. The PL-15 is larger and heavier, so planes like the J-20 carrier 2 fewer missiles than the F-22. The PL-15 has has less advanced seeker, but this is on purpose to save money and allow more to be produced. Which is fine as Chinese air combat doctrine states large number of air craft will be firing mass numbers of PL-15's and the coming PL-21's at enemies.
So missile spam is the goal, which suppresses enemy air assets without need to shot them down. As they are stuck defending and can not fire back making the useless as long as enemy PL-15's/PL-21's keep coming. US/Western doctrine is smaller numbers of planes and missiles that are better at killing targets than suppressing them. Though the US is taking a page out China and Soviet/Russian missile spam doctrine with the Peregrine (which is a medium range BVRM missile and has dual seekers so can be replace AIM-9X Sidewinder for WVRM fights as its the same size as a Sidewinder) which is half the size of AMRRAM and with a seeker about as good as 90's AIM-120C7. Allowing US planes to carrier more missiles they can spam at an enemy.
As for ranges and capabilities, the US/West tend understate the missiles and the Chinese/Russians tend of overstate their missiles. The reality is ranges and abilities are always under best conditions possible. So all BVRM missiles in real combat will have far less reliable ranges because of things like weather, jamming and skill of pilots on both sides. As for the PL-21 'new' capabilities, the PL-15 and even AIM-120D can do all that, its the seeker that gives it these abilities. Its range is based on its motor be it rocket or ram jet. The PL-21 like the AIM-260 (AIM-260 is duel motor primary, then secondary is the same size as the AIM-120D) has big rocket motor, will be larger than the PL-15E (by about a meter longer). So while its rocket motor will give it longer range at the cost of a larger missile and current US/Wester and Chinese AWACS only have range of about 300km's. All modern BVRM missiles rely on AWACS to hit targets at range. If the Chinese want to make it so the PL-21 to be able to function beyond AWACS range reliably then each missile would costs 10's of millions of dollars. Defeating the purpose of Chinese missile spam to suppress US/West air assets since China could never afford to make many of them (even the US isn't made of money and can't afford such expensive missiles). So odds are the PL-21 will have better seeker than the PL-15, but its main purpose will remain suppressing enemy air assets at AWACS range or around 300km's. Finally the PL-21 is not finished testing yet, so it can't be best in the world yet, as it hasn't moved into production and fielding by the Chinese. Which makes sense its an ambitious project no matter what it will take time prefect (just like AIM-260 has).
I will admit the US ECW projects did slow down during the War on Terror era, but they didn't stop. The new air decoy missiles and towed decoy systems show that. But something to remember, since the US has had stealth for some time it hasn't needed ECW as much as Russia or China. So China has put the resources into ECW in order to have chance against US stealth. Meaning China's ECW has to be at least as good as US/Western ECW system. To the US military anything equal or near equal to itself means the US is behind. As the US will only fight as long as it has the major advantage.

It’s always a fools gambit to assume you’re the best in the world (gotta confirm it like the US, and continue to imagine you’re gonna be playing catch up if you don’t start with the best). That said, the J-20 is more than likely a propaganda piece than a truly superior jet. US jets can do everything the J-20 can (if not better) with just one pilot. That and they still can’t make a phone that has a chip smaller than 7nm. If their domestic tech can’t hit modern day levels, I can’t imagine how actually lacking military tech is. And that’s after corruption steals about 60% of the budget to make the thing. The smartest thing to do at the end of the day though is to assume the J-20 is in fact this monsterous beast China claims, and create countermeasures for that eventuality. If it turns out to be what most think it is, the. Our current AA capabilities will be more than enough.
