    I have no musical talents/skills, but have always enjoyed the bagpipes. I just learned more about the bagpipe in 9 minutes than I have in 47 years. Bagpipe blown! LOL Thank you for this Ally, great stuff!!

    A lot of bands have been using a concert A chanter, and just cap the drones. Glad to see this concert B option that will work with standard drones.

    I have my very first chanter from the late 1960’s, it is a Lowre chanter and will tune to a a=440 and will play with my church organ without any issues. Nothing special except I need to flatten the drones down quite a bit. Remember back then all chanters were wooden and somewhat fragile…. That is 50 years of changes in pitch, that chanter may have been made in the late 1940’s or early 50’s but with Highland Cathedral, sounds so sweet. Be thankful the drones are not bamboo and a royal pain to tune in….. Todays drone reeds are so fantastic and with flow restriction makes life easier for us old guys!!!!😅

    Thank you, and well done. I'm a fan of older pipes and b-flat chanters. I have an a-440 chanter in cocobolo and have developed a way to match modern drone reeds to any pitch a-440 to 476hz, or modern band pitch. Chanter is available to the right player free of charge. Cheers!

    Thank you Ally! This is great news. I appreciate the way you broke it down as well. Another long form could be going into the scales more “mixolydian” vs others as it relates to the pipes. Would also love to hear the same song played with the different chanters.

    From an engineering perspective I find it interesting, though the old drummer in me really finds it interesting. In a way chanters to pipers are like implement (sticks, mallets, bundles and brushes) are to drummers. Chanters are how you get keys, and implements are how we change tamber and texture.

    To make things even more confusing, pipers generally talk as though the instrument was actually tuned to a 440 concert A, which hasn't been true for a very long time, if it ever was. It certainly was before I started, and I've been playing for over 50 years. There was so much information in this video it makes my head spin. If I watch it 4 or 5 more times, maybe I'll sort it all out.

    • @Sarge-jn5ps
      @Sarge-jn5ps 2 роки тому +2

      Also, the part that gets forgotten about much too often is maintenance. Too many novice musicians forget to keep their instruments clean and in temperature regulated areas. This helps keeping the instruments play ready when you want to use them. Also, proper storage. If you leave a guitar on a display stand for a long period of time, it will warp the neck. I have seen it happen more often than I would like to say.

    That’s the most detailed explanation of pipe chanters I’ve come across.
    Although I’ve been playing the GHB to a reasonable standard for many years and I’ve got various science degrees, music theory does my head in! So I’m still none the wiser after your excellent presentation - my fault!
    So I’ll stick to my theory - bagpipes are too loud to play with other instruments in any key. That gives me a good excuse to not engage in any jam sessions.

    I'm sitting here with my guitar in front of my TV watching this video trying to keep up with your explanation of the chanter keys. Great explanations! I suppose on an A pitch chanter you could also play in E Dorian, F# Phrygian, G Lydian and C# Locrian if needed? Thanks for the videos!

    I just got a blair electric bagpipe so I could try to play music with my son who plays piano and alto sax but i cannot figure out what frequency we need to play in order to sound good. This was a good start but we are still strugglilng.

    Great explaination Ally, loving the extended video idea . Traditionally pipers were not taught this stuff as they usually only played with other pipers so understanding key was not really particularly useful. This is something I had to learn in recent years as I have been playing tunes with my guitar playing cousin and the first question he would ask me is what key are we going to play in. The first time he asked me this I was like what do you mean key?

    So, when ACDC put the bagpipes on "It's a Long way To The Top", which is in A, did they have to tune up to B Flat to play with the pipes?
