Thank you, and well done. I'm a fan of older pipes and b-flat chanters. I have an a-440 chanter in cocobolo and have developed a way to match modern drone reeds to any pitch a-440 to 476hz, or modern band pitch. Chanter is available to the right player free of charge. Cheers!
Thank you Ally! This is great news. I appreciate the way you broke it down as well. Another long form could be going into the scales more “mixolydian” vs others as it relates to the pipes. Would also love to hear the same song played with the different chanters.
I am sorry, I have no musical skills, and I can't learn that's not my purpose, instead I enjoy see and listen you palying bagpiper, it's a pleasure's moment of the day. Thanks for play so beatifull.
Thank u for explaining how bagpipes work I'm from New Zealand and it's amazing to see a beautiful check playing all my favourite tunes so thankful 🎉Ally .x
Thank you ! You clarified so many points. I got a bagpipe last Xmas and besides the assembly and tuning I just couldn't understand why it felt so limited.
As a musician myself, I’ve always dismissed the bagpipes, not really understanding them. I’ve learned more about them in a few minutes with you, Ally, than I ever knew and your innovative work-arounds, enabling you to play along with concert instruments, really impress me. Thanks so much!
Playing Musical instruments isn't sooo easy hey ! Takes skill/ intelligence/ patience 😊👍 I play guitar & i remember how confusing learning it was for me ! 17 years later I'm 100% comfortable playing guitar & it's very easy now 🎸😝🇦🇺🏄♂️
Also, the part that gets forgotten about much too often is maintenance. Too many novice musicians forget to keep their instruments clean and in temperature regulated areas. This helps keeping the instruments play ready when you want to use them. Also, proper storage. If you leave a guitar on a display stand for a long period of time, it will warp the neck. I have seen it happen more often than I would like to say.
My pipeband uses the B flat chanters with regular drones and pipes sounds great! Perfect when playing with brass and reed bands and other instrument's! Enjoy your awsome videos!!
There is my favorite bagpipe lady girl I love listening to you play and I you are very knowledgeable I know I have seen you play violin you proabably can play more instruments than that I just haven't seen enough of your videos though but now I have subsribed so I will be seeing more now. OUR BAGPIPE QUEEN I WISH YOU GOOD LUCK AND GREAT PROSPERITY
That is so amazing, I'm curious if and how soon we will see greater variety in the pipe band competitions, with the availability of this new chanter/Reed set up.
Unique channel and talent who knows maybe the drop kick Murphys might call they've been playing at the new york state fair for the past couple of years, that would be so cool , take care ally
Thanks for this! Our humble little pipe band sometimes plays bar gigs with piano and guitar (and we’ve got a trumpet player who wants to join us, too!) I’ve had a hard time explaining why the bagpipes don’t sound quite right with the other instruments. This proved very helpful!
Thank You so much for exceptional education of the pipes!!!! You continue to Amaze me with Your Skills and Knowledge!!!! I have wondered how you transpose all these songs for the Bagpipe!!!! I Love Your Outfits for the week video!!!!
"I don't know what the FUCK you just said, little man... But you's special... You reached out, and touched a brotha's heart...." -Tracy Morgan, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Excellent information presented clearly and concisely . Very well done. Thank you. I forgot to mention, you also have a beautifully clear voice. Your tone lacks the electronic junk that is added to todays music. The spontaneous way you sang out the notes was ear pleasing. You should sing some songs yourself!!!!!!
To make things even more confusing, pipers generally talk as though the instrument was actually tuned to a 440 concert A, which hasn't been true for a very long time, if it ever was. It certainly was before I started, and I've been playing for over 50 years. There was so much information in this video it makes my head spin. If I watch it 4 or 5 more times, maybe I'll sort it all out.
Looking forward to seeing you live at the Pittsburgh Irish festival if you hear a quiet harmonica just ignore it and consider it a tribute to your talent

Hi there I found this video really interesting I don't play eny instruments but my son plays a few instruments thanks for the tutorial, I like this sort of thing every now and then it makes the chanel a bit more rounded. So thanks again and keep up the good work
I knew you were a talented piper - but you are also a music technologist. I had many questions abt piping pitches. You addressed them all with aplomb. Now I see why pipes are typically accompanied by DRUMS (no pitch there!) 😂
Well I now know that bagpipes have chanters, that you can change, and that the other pipes are called drone pipes and that they can have extenders put on them. 🙂
My wife is a concert Bassoonist that plays in a symphony orchestra. She has a recurring nightmare that she forgot her reeds or broke them before a concert. Glad that you were able to sort that in the wings (~phew). She carries many extra auxiliary reeds in her case so she can adapt to changing weather conditions. Do your reeds react to changing weather conditions, barometric pressure, humidity and temperature?
This was an amazing video...19 years and didn't know about this Chanter stuff like that....Question: a week! reed will do the same off scale or seated off scale....that excludes a crap Chanter, Soft Reed....and tape can alter the scale... .So watch Simon Freiser University .Field Montgomery Competition pipe Bands...world Championship
Nice video. I'm looking forward to learn playing bagpipes and my question is, do you have any recommendations for beginners in terms of bagpipes and any tip how to start?
I have two sets of shuttle pipes each in a different key: one in A and the other in B. I have about a dozen chanters in four different keys: A, B, C and G. I would love to get a set of great highland bagpipes but I wouldn' be able to play it in my condo, sadly....

Do you have any tips or advice about how to matchup my lower hand to the holes easier and more consistently? I feel like my pinky and ring fingers are in an uncomfortable position when on the holes.
I got my new G1 practice chanter today and it made all the difference, not only do I sound a lot better, but the holes are in more comfortable positions. I'm going to chalk this one up to a learning experience that even just for learning purposes it's worth the little extra expense for a quality chanter. Thank you, Ally, so much for the recommendation to check out G1.

You singing the notes really helped explain the note spacing.
I love listening to my fellow musicians talk about what they're passionate about. Thank you for this.
Thank you, I learned something today!!! My Grandfather's name was MacGinnis so the pipes have always touched my heart!
A lot of bands have been using a concert A chanter, and just cap the drones. Glad to see this concert B option that will work with standard drones.
Thanks for your
Banter on the Chanter.

So, when ACDC put the bagpipes on "It's a Long way To The Top", which is in A, did they have to tune up to B Flat to play with the pipes?
