I have no musical talents/skills, but have always enjoyed the bagpipes. I just learned more about the bagpipe in 9 minutes than I have in 47 years. Bagpipe blown! LOL Thank you for this Ally, great stuff!!
I have my very first chanter from the late 1960’s, it is a Lowre chanter and will tune to a a=440 and will play with my church organ without any issues. Nothing special except I need to flatten the drones down quite a bit. Remember back then all chanters were wooden and somewhat fragile…. That is 50 years of changes in pitch, that chanter may have been made in the late 1940’s or early 50’s but with Highland Cathedral, sounds so sweet. Be thankful the drones are not bamboo and a royal pain to tune in….. Todays drone reeds are so fantastic and with flow restriction makes life easier for us old guys!!!!😅
Thank you, and well done. I'm a fan of older pipes and b-flat chanters. I have an a-440 chanter in cocobolo and have developed a way to match modern drone reeds to any pitch a-440 to 476hz, or modern band pitch. Chanter is available to the right player free of charge. Cheers!
You are absolutely amazing, Ally. You are so knowledgeable and you play so beautifully. Thank you for explaining and demonstrating all about the different chanters. I learned so much. Thanks again!
Been playing bagpipes for almost ten years now and still learning. You’r channel is a great resource. I love how you explain everything. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Ally! This is great news. I appreciate the way you broke it down as well. Another long form could be going into the scales more “mixolydian” vs others as it relates to the pipes. Would also love to hear the same song played with the different chanters.
Thank u for explaining how bagpipes work I'm from New Zealand and it's amazing to see a beautiful check playing all my favourite tunes so thankful 🎉Ally .x
As a musician myself, I’ve always dismissed the bagpipes, not really understanding them. I’ve learned more about them in a few minutes with you, Ally, than I ever knew and your innovative work-arounds, enabling you to play along with concert instruments, really impress me. Thanks so much!
Great video! You answered all the questions I had, especially regarding the drones. 🙂👍 What I liked most though, was your enthusiasm, and the sheer joy in music you radiated! It really brings a smile to your face, and makes the world a little better! 🧠 (I can't find a suitable emoji, but imagine this is a happy brain!)
Thank you ! You clarified so many points. I got a bagpipe last Xmas and besides the assembly and tuning I just couldn't understand why it felt so limited.
My pipeband uses the B flat chanters with regular drones and pipes sounds great! Perfect when playing with brass and reed bands and other instrument's! Enjoy your awsome videos!!
I recently discovered the beauty of Heathen folk metal. I know little about music. People who call an amazing artiste a fake and foolish muggle haters. Ignore them. People with no haters, don’t matter much. I found you today while watching Alaina ginger tail and followed. Thank you Ally! ❤
Thanks for this! Our humble little pipe band sometimes plays bar gigs with piano and guitar (and we’ve got a trumpet player who wants to join us, too!) I’ve had a hard time explaining why the bagpipes don’t sound quite right with the other instruments. This proved very helpful!
Ally, you got a subscription from me. Everything you said was correct and you explained and presented it very well. Instead of explaining this myself as I have done many times, I will now just send this video.

Sorry Ally, I lost you at the 51 sec. mark ... I don't understand or even read music. I wish I could, but I appreciate your enthusiasm toward explaining the bagpipe chanter, as well as your music.
There is my favorite bagpipe lady girl I love listening to you play and I you are very knowledgeable I know I have seen you play violin you proabably can play more instruments than that I just haven't seen enough of your videos though but now I have subsribed so I will be seeing more now. OUR BAGPIPE QUEEN I WISH YOU GOOD LUCK AND GREAT PROSPERITY
From an engineering perspective I find it interesting, though the old drummer in me really finds it interesting. In a way chanters to pipers are like implement (sticks, mallets, bundles and brushes) are to drummers. Chanters are how you get keys, and implements are how we change tamber and texture.
To make things even more confusing, pipers generally talk as though the instrument was actually tuned to a 440 concert A, which hasn't been true for a very long time, if it ever was. It certainly was before I started, and I've been playing for over 50 years. There was so much information in this video it makes my head spin. If I watch it 4 or 5 more times, maybe I'll sort it all out.
Playing Musical instruments isn't sooo easy hey ! Takes skill/ intelligence/ patience 😊👍 I play guitar & i remember how confusing learning it was for me ! 17 years later I'm 100% comfortable playing guitar & it's very easy now 🎸😝🇦🇺🏄♂️
Also, the part that gets forgotten about much too often is maintenance. Too many novice musicians forget to keep their instruments clean and in temperature regulated areas. This helps keeping the instruments play ready when you want to use them. Also, proper storage. If you leave a guitar on a display stand for a long period of time, it will warp the neck. I have seen it happen more often than I would like to say.
Hi there I found this video really interesting I don't play eny instruments but my son plays a few instruments thanks for the tutorial, I like this sort of thing every now and then it makes the chanel a bit more rounded. So thanks again and keep up the good work
Excellent information presented clearly and concisely . Very well done. Thank you. I forgot to mention, you also have a beautifully clear voice. Your tone lacks the electronic junk that is added to todays music. The spontaneous way you sang out the notes was ear pleasing. You should sing some songs yourself!!!!!!
Thanks Ally That’s the most detailed explanation of pipe chanters I’ve come across. Although I’ve been playing the GHB to a reasonable standard for many years and I’ve got various science degrees, music theory does my head in! So I’m still none the wiser after your excellent presentation - my fault! So I’ll stick to my theory - bagpipes are too loud to play with other instruments in any key. That gives me a good excuse to not engage in any jam sessions. Alba gu brath! George
Awesome! Many thanks for your Video. Maybe you are able to make a Video about the difference between a Scottish and an Irish Pipe? (If there is a difference?)
Amazing. A few more videos of yours and I got all my pitch and octave questions answered. Your sweet. Even if though you dress in kilts (men's clothes).

This is something I had to learn in recent years as I have been playing tunes with my guitar playing cousin and the first question he would ask me is what key are we going to play in.
