I'm a 76 year old white guy, and I've been listening to Motown for the past 50 years. Believe me, you are barely scratching the surface of the genre. I have a copy of every Motown Single from1959-1971. I also listen to lots of other genre and artists, from 60's psychedelic, Classical, 40's/50's Big Band, 70's rock, Punk, Folk Rock and of course Viking/Nordic Rock and German metal.

This is The Philly Soul Sound. The answer to Motown.

    • @laminage
      @laminage 4 роки тому +3

Not necessarily. The Philly Soul Sound had been around since the 1960's beginning with Northern Soul but it was overlooked but it's gained Cult Status in England. Also unlike Motown The Philly Soul Groups didn't have The Charm School that was duplicated with Lou Pearlman (The Backstreet Boys, N'Sync) not to mention the Popstar Franchise all over the world and K-Pop. It continued where Motown left off when it started to wane aroudn 1975. Two Philly Soul Songs were covered by Motown Songs. I'm Gonna Make You Leave Me and Don't Leave Me This Way. The Lead Singer Russell Tompkins Falsetto was a major influence on Barry Gibb of The Bee Gees and Jordan Knight Of New Kids On The Block. Also if you listen carefully, at the beginning you'll hear a Sitar (Indian Guitar). These guys did it the old fashioned way. Also it was later covered by Simply Red as well as If You Don't Know Me By Now.

Yes, I love those groups from my youth like Stylistics and The Manhattans!
When we sang at parties and karaoke or in my musical groups I’d always sang tenor. Growing up I just LOVED these artists that could sail away smoothly with their falsetto. I was amazed. And ended up learning and, eventually, became more comfortable singing tenor than any other parts.
And, it was from just constantly listening to those amazing groups with great voices.
I emulated Russell Thompkins Jr (lead of Stylisticss) and Philip Bailey(EWF) so much because I wanted to sing like them.
Miss those 70’s and 80’s, dearly!
Btw, brother... thanks for your great open mind in many different genres. In the same way. Keep doing you.
But, and I know many do it now days, but, Stylistics and Manhattans were not MOTOWN. I forgot who it was, but at least one group member left over of these groups and signed with MOTOWN. But, the groups as a whole were not.
Stylistics were part of the Philly Sound. Trust me...I got schooled some while in the military and meshed with my Black buddies and we’d share music and knowledge.
And, I’d meshed with my Country buddies. And, did the same.
And, friends from Philadelphia and New York were very proud and defended their music history and their artist. Just as I do with my traditional Hawaiian music (and, no, it’s not the Reggae “Jawaiian” stuff a lot of people, even locals from Hawaii, claim is Hawaiian music 😂)
But, again... keep doing your, brother. And, thank you for beings little part of keeping the music of my youth alive!
      Stay safe, Happy Holidays!
      Aloha!🤙🏾

Love the stylistics. I must have missed this reaction. I was 16 when the 70s hit! My son tells me I had the best music years. I agree!.

People still married who are in their 60s that fell in love to this song. It was a monster crossover hit. We left your generation a heaping pile of you know what ( thanks to MAGA ). Our music is the least we can leave you.

There were 3 basic subgroups of Soul in the 60’s: Motown, Philly, & Memphis. Memphis included Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Booker T & the MG’s, the Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, & many others. They’re all great & worth reacting to.

yes motown was a record label and it was considered the detroit sound. but the style of the type of bands that were on motown carried over to a lot of other cities and even though they may not have been on the motown label it did become common to think of that style as the motown sound. what a time for music that can never be duplicated. so glad i grew up in that era.

I call this genre "Better than Motown" Chilites, Stylistics, Delfonics etc
Try The Delfonics "La-La (Means I Love You)", "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)", "Break Your Promise", "I'm Sorry"
Also Switch "I Call Your Name" The Floaters "Float on"

Not all singing groups from the 60's & 70's recorded on the same labels; Motown was just one label among many; The Stylistics were as were The Delfonics, The Philly Sound and a totally different label. But, yeah 💎🌹💎... That was the Era that men and women loved one another ❤️ .... Airrion Love (real name!) was the baritone in the beginning
Try Rock and Roll Baby, another one of theirs
