  • So, It Runs Windows XP?! - Open Labs Miko - Hands on in 2022
Lets take a look at this Open Labs Miko Timbaland Special Edition music workstation from 2008. I don't remember seeing or hearing much about this type of product back in the day. Basically, this is a music workstation that is powered by an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU 4Gb of RAM and 32 bit Windows XP!
    Specs:
    Timbaland Special Edition MiKo
    37-key
All of the features of the MiKo LX4 plus 4GB RAM
    Core2Quad© Quad-core 64-bits (2.4GHz)
    EMU-Ensoniq ASR10
    ASRX library
    QWERTY
    Special Arctic White color
Here in 2022, I'd say this now qualifies as a vintage PC. For the time however, I believe the specs were pretty impressive.
This unit came with a lot of pre-installed VSTs, like EMU Proteus X Composer, Mo Phatt, Virtuoso and much more.

I love these machines. I was able to purchase a Neko XXL used by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park on tour and was just amazed by it. So much fun to use and infinite possibilities since it's a full on PC. I'm upgrading a Timbaland Neko with 12th gen Intel i7 and Windows 10 for my church and my keyboard player could not be more excited!

Funny. I just fired up my old XP machine with Proteus VX on it. All the ROMS are available on the way back machine. Pretty much the same thing, only in one box with a keyboard and audio interface. It's neat. Would love to have one, but they really hold their price.

hey @Cymon 66 yeah these guys used to cost over $5k - I also found a cheap one a few years ago and they are a lot of fun, albeit a bit of a time capsule in PC tech 🙂 but you have a Synclavier setup so you know about that
The Muse Receptor I have is way more powerful (similar concept in a rack) - it came out before the Miko
lots of great plugins of E-mu classic stuff though
the singer of Korn used to take one on the road to work on album stuff in-between tour gigs
Lil Jon was shilling for them for a while too - funny video of him trying to do a live demo

Cool. Draws some parallels with Sm-Pro V-machine, although here it is a windows PC on steroids and V-machine is a Linux mini-PC with wine (windows emulation). I used Proteus X and I was surprised how cool it sounds, but I found it somewhat buggy or tricky to use, don't remember the exact reasons.

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  2 роки тому +1

Yo Graywolf! Absolutely, especially the Karsyn application reminded me of the V-machine. I'd love to get one of those eventually to mess around with. The Proteus X I agree sounds pretty good but was a pain to use, so much so that I ended up just buying a real Proteus 2000 eventually lol and that thing is no picnic to program either, but at least it works correctly!

hey Oleg @graywolf2004ru yeah i have one of those SM Pro Audio VMachines along with a Miko - the VMachine was cool but underpowered :-) The Muse Receptor I have is way more powerful - it came out before the Miko

I recently thought about trading it in for the new Roland phantom-0 but it’s no better than the Openlabs instruments because the Openlabs machines are upgradable as long as desktop parts exist

Usually a help manual was included as software on all OL models. The only things that are not really upgradeable with the OL boards is the Firebox due to the chipset. Lots of latency blips with the never firebox released. OL shipped boards with cheap chinese RAM so notorious crashes and system errors were the norm right from the factory. Swap the RAM for crucial ballistics RAM and youre good to go! The keybeds are also known to have issues with the sensors. The fatar keys accept alesis keybed sensors to replace them. Cloning the Western Digital HD to an SSD is a must and keeping the original WDHD as a backup system restore disk is also a must. Many people tried to upgrade to win 10 but the drivers made for these in 10 werent as solid as the XP or Win7 drivers. The Sandybridge processes were decent and really shine with the RAM upgrades. Also upgrading to HDMI from DVI is possible as well as USB 3 (blue tip). Bottom line....these boards are incredibly powerfull and still beat everything in the market. Ive had my Neko since 2012 and with my i9 motherboard, 2 1tb samsung SSD, 32gRAM conversion, nothing on the market can beat what it does.

I would guess the touch screen drivers for windows 10 will be the hardest part to get going? Or sourcing perhaps a newer one?

    • @MarshalArnold
      @MarshalArnold  2 роки тому +4

Actually already have this thing working with newer hardware and Windows 10. The touch screen was actually the easy part. The tuff part was finding the mFusion application wich is needed for the drivers for the controllers. But, some guys helped get me what I needed the Neko/MIKO FB GROUP and helped me get it up and running. Update vid coming soon 😎👍

    • @MarshalArnold

Yo Wagoo! I won't be able to retain the Open Labs Shell once I swap out the hard drive and throw in my other system's motherboard. Is totally cool though as mostly the new guts will be to run Ableton 11 and use it as the DSP/mixer for the live setup. Really the only thing I'm worried about is whether I can get the proprietary controllers to work.. But I'm pretty sure I'll be successful.

quick correction, the NeKo 64 and others were actually larger with a bigger keybed
MiKo was designed to be "portable" such as it is :-) portable for 2003 but not now
Jonathan Davis from Korn used to cart his MiKo around during a tour and compose new album stuff in his off time - I saw some footage of him with it on a bed in a hotel room working on stuff
they are a fun piece of music tech history though, and Mimik was supposed to be awesome compared to Sample Robot (Redmatica) - I suppose YMMV 🙂
    cool video though, thanks

Unfortunately no, these OpenLabs workstations are no longer produced. There was another company that up till Covid I think was making something similar, but they no longer make their version either. That said, im pretty sure some of the more modern Korg workstations use a PC based setup, but probably running some flavor of Linux with their own UI so not Windows based as far as I know.

The closest new device I've seen to this in 2024 is the Akai MPC Key 37.
I used to have an Open Labs Neko back in 2011 and loved it but thought it was too expensive to not come with much software and still have to make the DAW recognize the built in midi devices manually...
I don't have the MPC I mentioned but from what I've learned of it so far is it has a custom OS and all built in features function out of the box. 🤷🏾‍♂️
