    I have the same rack in my car. Glad I took mine out. The tie rod ends were floppy and loose. I drove mine for about 20 years without the power steering hooked up. I've decided to hook up the power steering when I reinstall it.

    Good video. It would be nice to know what specific tool ur using when you using the tools you laid out in the beginning. I'm using 11 mm socket on this bolt right now for example. Also some close ups of what the bolt or nut looks like also helps, maybe what angle you used to loosen or tighten etc. More detail always helps a ton. Being vague or getting a bolt out without showing how it was done is not good at all. I'm not saying that happened here, but it sure does on many other videos from elsewhere. I did really like how you started the video with a lineup of tools ur will be using. Go with that formula through out its entirety and really break it down for us DIY people. Thanks brother.

    Be sure to grease that rod fitting before putting the tires on or you'll never get it, Don't overtightened your power steering lines at the rack ( I cracked my brand new rack being heavy handed )

    Interesting video It would be good to see how you test the complete mechanism with the engine on and how to know how well aligned the wheels are when placing the balls, are the laps counted when taking them out ?. Greetings from Venezuela.

    I'm in the process of trying to get that 11mm bolt that is 12 point back in and it will not grab the threads on the other side. Any tips?

    Is the procedure for replacing the power steering rack different for the 2.3L engine? I know this is for the V8 only, just curious about the procedure itself.

      Im stuck here wondering the same thing, I got those bushings with the metal sleeve in them from a remanufactured rack and don't know how to get them in there

    I just did the steering rack on my 84. I would advise anyone doing this job to replace the power steering pressure and return lines from the cooler as well. I also installed an inline filter - Info here: 3/8" Raybestos Transmission Magnetic Inline Filter M010CB 515554 51-17 (99335) for some extra insurance.

    I have fully tightened my 2 new rack hoses and when they are in the rack and pump, the nut is solid while the silver metal hose line seems to move/has play. Is this normal? the nuts are as tight as i can tighten them.

    My rack and pinion just barely hits my oil pan and I can't install it. Even the old one I took out only goes back in because the bushings fell out on removal giving it just enough room to slide in without the bushings. Any one have an idea? Its a 85 with the stock oil pan and both racks are the exact same, I just can't get it to clear the pan to slide on.

      Check your motor mounts, sounds like they might be worn out. It is a tight fit, you may have to lift the engine.

    How do I align the splines on the rack with the rag joint? My rack has a flat spot, is that the side where the set screw tightens down?

    • @cjponyparts
      @cjponyparts 4 роки тому

      Yes it will only line up one way.

      @@cjponyparts Thanks, i did the swap today. After burping out as much air as possible I took it for a ride around the block. My steering wheel seems to turn by itself and not return to center after a turn. Any ideas on what could be causing this? It didn't have this issue before the swap.

  • @crlrealty1

    You need to show how to center the rack before installation.

    I need to change the Steering Coupling Assembly found here: www.cjponyparts.com/steering-coupling-assembly-1979-1993/p/HW4162/?year=1993&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2PP1BRCiARIsAEqv-pQyORktg8-DU8sB0rAacy3i9GTXVMf3Lm2zTPbBzRFklbgQMD2VoOwaAit_EALw_wcB and i want to do it at the same time i do the rack. Have you a video demonstrating this? I have the four cylinder engine on a 1991

      @@cjponyparts Appreciated. I just swapped the rack out, successfully based on your video. yanked the whole shaft down, grinder the rivets and put in a new rag joint. Now I put everything back together and the steering wheel is 180 degrees upside down now... oops. any advice for a quick correction without dropping everything again?

    Most important part of this job is reattaching the rag joint to the new rack....and you guys didn't even touch on that??why

  • @FancyAnimal
    @FancyAnimal 2 роки тому +1

    This is a colossal waste of time that will not solve the vague center steering problem with foxbodies. Install Maximum Motorsports caster / camber plates set to max caster and replace the rag joint with a universal joint steering shaft. Everything beyond that is money wasted. BTW reman’d racks do not replace the gearing so all the backlash from worn gearing will be present. They just swap the inner tie rods and seals and spray paint.
