We did our first 2 cruises for Royal Caribbean on Radiance of the Seas back in May. Did a B2B to Alaska. The ship itself is laid out well, but the timing for certain things were really weird. Anytime dining didn't start until 6:45pm and the Cafe in the Solarium was hardly ever open. They did allow kids in the Solarium pool, but the times were weird and we could never get to any of them. The kids areas up on the top deck were never open and the arcade didn't work. Thankfully my son loved the kids room. One other thing that bothered us was when you came back from an afternoon in port, the only place to get food was at the coffee shop. Windjammer is far too small for this ship. My husband caught covid on our second week and they were NOT prepared to deal with it.
Food, you hit it on the head. It wasn't great. The MDR on our first week was BAD, but improved the second week.

    • @Livingtheglobe
      @Livingtheglobe  Рік тому

Hi, Michelle! So sorry to hear you did not have a good experience especially on the roundtrip! They were probably still slow from covid and still had a lot of things closed. The food was not great when we sailed either. When we sailed on the Oasis of the Seas the food was fantastic thats why we decided to try another ship. We saw b2b option as well but we like to try different ships 😃

Thank you for the nice review. It helped me. We're going on Radiance of seas nov 4-11th 2023 in suite 1060 and probably won't eat in buffet. Suites can get menu from main dining rooms so hope food is bit better. So I probably will get juice, breakfast delivered, lunch also and dinner may go to dining room. we will be with friends so it should be blast. So you didn't care for the shows? We enjoyed Harmony of seas last cruise. Did they have karaoke that's always fun..well not going to get too excited about this cruise then. Just hope excursions are decent. July is our 8th Alaska cruise and 5th on Radiance. We choose Radiance because of solarium pool, open format at windjammer, rustic Schooner and Quill bars. Quieter for us over 50 crowd. The mini golf, rock wall, and movie theater add fun on this smaller ship. All cruise food on all other lines we have traveled lately has suffered too. I agree entertainment has declined… hate to say it, but NCL newer ship had much better broadway type shows during last Alaska cruise. Regardless of cruise line, you will find Alaska remarkable.

We have watched Hubbard and Mendenhall glaciers recede so significantly, but cherish every calving event so they are musts. Best shopping is Ketchikan and typically rent a car to explore for eagles and bears, but had fun at lumberjack show. Kayaks and whales in Icy Pt. Each trip so awesome...

We have been on 18 cruises, 11 with Royal Caribbean. We did Alaska on this ship. Absolutely the worse cruise ever. When we entered our cabin, there were fuzz/hair balls on the carpet. Large enough to pick up. I opened the cabinet to set up the safe. There was about $5 is US bills and change laying there. Okay, the cabin was poorly cleaned. A broken umbrella was on the floor of the closet. Hmmm really don't think it was cleaned at all. We went 6 days with no hot water. Two days with no water at all. 4 days without a bathmat. No ice in the
Windjammer the whole week. No waitstaff helping with drinks, etc. all week. One evening we were in a lounge. Kids were playing football with a shoe. Complained to two different crew members. Nothing was done. Kids constantly in the casino. We enjoyed the cruise ports and especially the 6 night after cruise land tours. The cruise food was mediocre, at best. The only time we saw our cabin person was on shore. If we needed something we had to leave a note. We complained repeatedly about the issues but it fell on deaf ears. We didn't use the main dining room at all. Anytime dining didn't start until 6:45. By that time the Wind hammer was closing down. We still cruise RC but Radiance was worse ship and crew ever.

Just my opinion...the only reason to take a cruise on any smaller/older vessels, is based on the itinerary that some of the much larger/newer ships "don't or can't" port to. Like the Pacific Coast Cruise from Vancouver down to San Diego & the many great ports in between...otherwise, I would not be on this ship. The larger/newer ships are the draw in most instances...the smaller, more dated ships(like this one) are really itinerary and/or cost driven; so yeah, expect low energy, minimum of fun entertainment, little to no "bells & whistles", and awkward flows in vibes. Great vid however...luv it & very informative.

    • @Livingtheglobe

Just cruised it last week. Musty smell, old tired furniture, windows were all dirty, food was meh, except for a few good dishes. I thought though the entertainment was awesome. They had a jazz band on board who were amazing. The singers and dancers were very good. The comedian was hilarious. The Argentinian act was great. Having said all that I would likely not go back to this ship it’s just too old and tired.

I just returned from a five night cruise on the Radiance of the Seas. We departed from New Orleans, LA. We went to Costa Maya and Cozumel. The cruise was sold out. Thus, the ship was packed. Since there are only two pools and three jacuzzies, they were usually pretty full. Even though the pools are supposed to be heated, the Solarium's pool was cool to cold. The main pool was very cold. My feet could feel very warm water being pumped into the main pool. However, it was not enough to warm the water. For the amount of people on the cruise, I do not think there are enough pools or jacuzzies.
I ate at Windjammer most of the cruise. In the beginning, I was content with the food. Near the end of the cruise, I got tired of the same food. The desserts were below average. The main food was average. The coffee in Latte Latitudes was good.
My child really enjoyed Adventure Ocean. My wife and I struggled to find things to do since we do not gamble or drink alcohol. I wanted to watch a movie in the Cinema on deck 6, but it was usually full.
Overall, I cannot recommend the Radiance of the Seas for a family when the ship is sold out. I recommend searching for a ship with more pools, jacuzzies, and activities. Unless the price is too good to pass on, the Radiance of the Seas is a bit too old to be worth it IMO.

I think we were on the ship with you... Returned Dec. 1st? We didn't feel like the ship was over crowded, but only used the hot tub one time around 10 or 11pm. We also don't drink. The food was mostly good, with some exceptions. I felt the deserts in the main dining room were much better than the buffet. We ate dinner in the main dining room all but one night. Breakfast (if we got up early enough) and Lunch in the windjammer was pretty good. What I got tired of, was the Park Cafe, especially the roast beef every day. And the bland/strange deserts. We didn't order any room service, due to the charge, so this was the only option after 9pm. At least the pizza wasn't terrible. And the cookies were good.
I think for what we paid, $66pp/night for everything, including gratuities, it was a good time.

I don’t think this is a party type cruise ship, especially since it’s an Alaskan cruise . Some people just like to chill in a lounge and drink the night away. Probably a way older demographic on that cruise.
Seems like a lot of the complaints are that this ship isn’t new or like a Bahamas cruise.

We had a good time. I recommend the trip, especially for the price. The ship is nice, easy to get around. Food was overall good, with a few let downs. We did not try any of the upcharge restaurants. In fact, we didn't spend any money on board at all beyond gratuities. I heard good things about the sushi place, brazilian steakhouse, and Chops. Our stateroom was actually roomy for an inside cabin, and the attendant was great. We did Costa Maya, and Cozumel with one sea day each way. We did our own thing in both ports.
In Costa Maya we wanted to visit the ruins, and walk around Mahahual. We walked out of the cruise port, and about 200 yards down the road. There was some taxis and we asked how much for the day, going the ruins etc. They said $120 for the ruins, and going to a beach. I said $100, and he very quickly said OK. Later I asked and he said $50 is the least he would do. They spoke some English, so I'd try to just say 50, and if they don't agree, keep walking. $60 would be easy. There were Taxis everywhere, you pay at the end, so they won't run off and leave you. The further you get from the port, the better. Consider having the taxi take you into town to exchange some dollars to pesos, you'll get a much better rate, and the ruins were charging double the price if you paid in USD. Along the way to the ruins there are some vendors selling leather goods and fruit, the prices were much, much better than in the port, and even better than in town along the beach. The tangerines and pineapple were great! At the ruins, consider getting a guide, we sort of tagged along with other groups, learned a lot just eavesdropping, since there isn't many signs. We had a bit of an issue with our phones and the time, due to a time change at sea, and then our phones getting service in Mexico updated, but were set an hour later, this affected the Royal app "Ship Time" as well, and it showed an hour later. Once I set my phone back to automatic, everything straightened out. But we weren't rushed, even with getting tacos in Mahahual, and walking around the beach area for an hour or so. Compared to the official excursion price of $210, we spent $170. $100 for the taxi, $60 (leather backpack, wallet, belt), $10 on drinks and tacos. There were other things to do, eg. all you can drink beach day. That didn't appeal to us, since we don't drink. I'm sure you'll get a better price on these by walking out of the cruise port as well, I just can't help, since I didn't try it. I wanted to do the ruins, then drive to Bacalar and there is a zipline, but we decided we didn't want to rush, and then thought we lost an hour...
In cozumel we got off the ship as early as possible. I wanted to go snorkeling and/or diving. We jumped in a white taxi, and it was $8 to the "Marina Fonatur" There was a gate, and I told them I had a reservation with one of the offices there. I just looked on google maps, and named an office. They let us through the gate. We walked around the 3 buildings asking about trips leaving in the morning, it was just before 8am, and lots of activity. We found several for 50-60 per person for snorkeling. We went with Pelagic Ventures Scuba for $60. 8 total on the boat, us and 3 other couples that were traveling together. It was a mixed group of divers and snorkelers. 1 hour in the water, an hour out, then an other hour in the water. I snorkeled the first hour, then my SO decided she didn't want to do the 2nd hour, and would stay in the boat. I asked the dive master if I could switch to scuba, (2 of the divers were not going for their second dive) after checked my PADI card, I was able to do a great dive, which I highly recommend. They didn't ask an additional fee from me, but the others said about $90pp for the 2 tank dive including all gear rental. I highly recommend this operation. Put us right on Palencar reef. We were back at the marina at 1:45, and back downtown ($8 told the driver Hooters, since that was the first thing I saw near the cruise ship, but another RC ship was docked at a different pier, so make a note of which pier you are on).
Entertainment aboard the ship ranged from great to just ok. As a professional musician, I am a bit critical... The guy playing in the Pub each night was entertaining and a great musician. As was the piano player in the Schooner bar. The various 2 or 4 piece bands that played on the pool deck and the Centrium were just OK. On the main stage I loved the Tango show. Piano Man was very good as well. Graig the comedian was great. The juggler was better than I expected. The other bands that played on the pool deck and in the Centrium were just OK. Things like the Dating game show, battle of the sexes, scavenger hunt, trivia were really fun. Movies in the cinema and on the pool deck were nice. Sunday and Monday night NFL played on the big screen on the pool deck, which was nice.
In New Orleans getting from the airport to the ship is easy, $25 taxi (or $10pp for 3+). We had time, so we took the E1 bus $2pp and the trolley $1.25pp. Depending on your timing, how much luggage etc... If you take the bus, from baggage claim, go up to the ticketing counters, and then out and to your right. It isn't a huge airport, so it wasn't far at all. We got off at Elk and the trolley came after a few minutes. We had plenty of time, and not much luggage, so we walked around the French Market etc.
Hopefully some of the info here will help you, this ended up being a bit long winded.
      You'll have a good time :)

While it's understandable that different people may have varying opinions on what constitutes a con, could you please provide more information on which specific cons you disagree with and why? It would be beneficial for those considering this cruise to have a more detailed understanding of your perspective.

@@Livingtheglobe most of the con list comes
Down to personal preference and not the ship itself. When people go on the smaller class ships with oasis class expectations then they’ll be disappointed with the results
