  • I had to play this piece for graduation requirement. I don't have a video of the performance, but I thought it might be interesting to create a music score video from my audio recording.
Music Score was obtained from imslp.org/wiki/...
Recorded using Audacity, which is free at audacity.source...

This piece is in the diploma stuff. It is a nightmare to play! As much as I love it, it can be a real pain to learn.

at about 4:44 a melody emerges that foreshadows melodic jazz lines that would appear almost 50 years later. Playing pure chromatic scales can become boring. Debussy makes it more interesting by interrupting the chromatic scale after a few notes with a second melody which weaves together with the chromatic one.

I've rarely heard dynamic contrast and control this amazing- backed with such good tone control! The pianissimo parts at 2:49 are incredible.

Bravo! A touch of genius to present this with the score. Much more interesting to me than to watch someone weaving and waving about like a flag in a windstorm.

WOW!!! That was awesome! My wife played this in college. I wanted to, but didn't have the patience that she did, so I played Weber, instead. :)

Exceptional high school students can play this but your private teacher should be able to give you an honest picture of whether you are ready. It is a huge mistake to attempt it for a performance or audition if you are not at the right level. It requires great technique, control, and nuance. If it's not in tune it can be very painful. I have one student working on it now who will perform it and another who loves it but will only be studying it, not performing it yet. Maybe in college.

well played, but from 3:52 to 3: 57 the Clarinet and the Pianoforte aren't together. And to respond to StupidClarinet, no, the player didn't rush at all. I have about over 50 different recordings of this piece with piano or with orchestra. I think this is a comfortable speed!

It's a great piece, but I feel like the clarinetist is rushing it a bit-- it sounds like he/she is in a rush to get this over with, and when a note is held out, the tone spreads. This was not a bad performance, I hope I don't make this sound that way.
