    Lavender will germinate within a few days if you wrap it in a moist paper towel, put it in a ziplock bag, then freeze it overnight. Let it come to room temperature, then plant it. This mimics the conditions it needs and it has sprouted for me in as little as 3 days though it usually takes 4 or 5.

      J. Garcia this is how I have always germinated my seeds. my mom still doesn't do it this way even though all of my plants in the past have thrived through doing this method. I never put them in the freezer though, I put them in the fridge for the first night and then leave them in the light. funny how my mom always tries to grow plants but can't even manage to keep them going before transplant time lol

    I happened to come across your channel and it couldn't have come at a better time because I just planted my peppers, rosemary and lavender (after a failed lavender attempt back in January). I'm looking to get serious and learn more about gardening this year (possibly make money in the coming years) and your 9 part series you did last year on peppers and tomatoes was Incredibly easy to follow and understand. I've been so lost in some people's videos but you are simple and to the point! I look forward to checking out your channel in the coming weeks for tips and tricks! Thanks so much!

    Thanks Gary....I got my lavender seeds sprouting in 2 days, like you said i put 4 seeds in the cups and all my 6 cups had at least 3 sprouts. I couldnt believe it. I have never seen any lavender plant anywhere around me in Lagos Nigeria, I have searched for growersand not found any and that is why i opted to buy the seeds online and just grow it out. I hope i succeed in getting a viable plant.

      That is record sprouting time. They like to be dry at times so let them do their thing without over watering. That will be exciting to have mature plants. Good luck!

      Hmm Interesting - does that mean its best to start it in summer then.
      Lagos is very humid and can be quite hot even in the rainy season.
      I will start some now mid summer in the UK and start again in January if I don't get much luck.
      Irabor I see say you no tok anything about refrigeration.
      Ok eebe laik say na original trial and error pesin go do with these Lavender seeds.

    As someone with no experience, this video was extremely helpful. I had several failures but surprisingly putting the seeds in a Ziploc bag stored the fridge for 3 weeks helps the seeds geminated very fast with a high rate of seedlings. I just place the plants outside, they get six hours of sunlight and they are growing despite the weather.

  • @dkulikowski

    Great advice, Gary. I started my 'Munstead' Lavender on February 1 and March 1, first quarter of the New Moon. I didn't try to separate the seedlings when planting in the 3" pots. I don't mind if they grow in a clump. In nature they naturally drop and grow in clumps, so I figure that is o.k. with me. You are so right about getting a 'head start' on growing perennials. Sooooooooo much cheaper than buying 4" perennial plants.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  11 років тому

      LARKS GARDENS I agree with natural seed falling in clumping. I generally over plant perennials. It does save a lot of money and they are pretty hardy plants in general. The perennials that is.

    I just harvested some seed from the dried flowerheads on my Lavandula angustifolia plant. Need to find out how best to sow the seeds and your video demonstration explains it in perfect detail. Thank you for taking the time to make it and share your experience with us. It’s late summer here in England so hoping it’s still fine to sow the seeds now so that I can get some decent sized lavender plants ahead of next summer. I am going to surface sow them in a flat seedling tray indoors. Excited to see the young plants germinate!

    I live in an area with alkaline soil which is great for lavender BUT we have harsh winters. If I start it now (late September) indoors can I transplant it in late April and then cover it with garden cloth in the following hard winter months? I'm aching to grow it but I don't really like keeping container plants and don't have a great deal of natural light available in my house for over-wintering large plants.

    Hi Gary. I bought an already established lavender from Home Depot a month ago. (First Time growing it.). It was fairly large in size so I didn’t repot it. Now it’s dying with most of its branches dried and brown. I thought I was under watering it but I read that lavender likes small frequent waterings. Most of it is dead and I’m wondering if I should start over. I’m just not sure what I did wrong. Is it possible to revive it if I clip the tips that are still green?

      So well drained and not a lot of water. The weather in MD has been too much rain. It is harming lots of stuff. Any weather like that in your area.

      I live in NY, and we have gotten tons of rain, but I've kept it indoors in its original pot. When I thought I was under-watering, I went and over-watered. :-( Now I'm wondering if I should've taken it out of the pot, put in some perlite for drainage, and repotted. Is too late to try to salvage?

      The fragrance is what helps indoors. It is tuff to grow indoors. You want a super draining soil and you want the plant to really dry before watering. Soggy indoor roots tends to klll lavender and rosemary in doors.

    I put in moist paper towel and put in the fridge (in zip lock plastic bag and in dark container) for few days, put it in rockwool, some of it sprout in 3 days the quickest.
    In my experience, if it put in the fridge more than 6 weeks, it will sprout itself in the fridge.
    Anyway I live in tropical country

      It really varies but I alway water the bottom as to not splash soil onto the plants. And it will change spring through hot summer. You always want moisture in the bed, not soaking but damp.

    Question
    When starting these indoors would it be helpful to have them under grow lights before germination? I know generally you don't put plants under grow lights until they sprout but wondering if its different with seeds that need light to germinate?

      Trần Tuyến Germination is hard. Some people refrigerate seeds for a week to make them cold and then germinate them. A very sandy soil helps to stop rot. They like to dry out and not have ongoing wet soil. The drier the better when planted in the ground. Is it rainy and wet there?

      You don't have to refrigerate them. Freezing is faster. What I do is to wrap the seeds in a damp paper towel, but the whole thing in a zip lock bag, then freeze it overnight. Let it come to room temperature then plant the seeds and they'll sprout in 3-5 days.

  • @Gili42-MartinF
    @Gili42-MartinF 11 років тому

    With seeds that have such a low germination rate, wouldn't it be easier to use a big tray, spread the seeds on top and then just transplant the indivual seedlings into pots after they've come up?
    For light germinators like basil I usually use a mist sprayer, so you can keep the top of the soil damp without making the soil underneath too wet. Works like a charm and they come up very quickly. Admittedly I've never tried this with lavender but don't see why it wouldn't work the same way.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  11 років тому

      ***** I think if you are look to germinate many that would be a good idea across a whole seed tray. Rosemary too. I havent tried that method for basil. I might give it a try.

    • @Gili42-MartinF
      @Gili42-MartinF 11 років тому

      I've tried a lot of different methods for basil but find that this works best: just spread the seeds over the top of your soil (in pots, or trays) and then press them down with your fingers, or the palm of your hand, being careful not to bury them even a little bit. Then spray with a mist sprayer regularly to keep them damp.
      very high germination rates and also very quick. I think light is the main factor here. Seeds that get buried take much longer to sprout.

    What temperature do you generally keep the grow space you start your lavender seeds in, and how long do you keep them under lights each day? I just read something that said keep them in a space at 60-70 degrees and just keep them in a window for 6-8 hours a day. What do you think? Really enjoying your videos as I prepare to start seeds for my first garden!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  10 років тому +3

      My house stays around 70. The grow closet because of the lights ranges 75-85 F. Lavender is tuff. I also read that a few days in your refrigerator helps. It likes a cold period. The variety matters too. I planted Munsted and 80% of it germinated. The video lav I got about 50%. I dont know if the germinating temp matters between 60-80. Ill have to poke around.
