Great content my friend. Keep the faith brother.
Very nice ideas!
Good ideas!
how does this channel not have a million subs. Far more entertaining
sticky sandpaper is the future!
Back to the future
You “found” a tile with a chip in it 😉. I tend to “find” a lot of drywall sheets with broken corners too and buy them at a discount. 😉
Haha. It was actually chipped. But I see you. I see you.
Loved it bud!!! Great tips, have a great day bud!
Great ideas, with common sense.
Thank you Ken. Merry Christmas
The video grain changing along with the mention of the lower grit totally got me today. That’s the attention to detail type energy we’re here for!
Thanks! That was my editors idea!
I think the real story here is how you found a new way to sand, turning an unprofitable popular product profitable through efficiency. Congrats!
I have a Metabo HC260C combined jointer-planer. It's nothing wrong to go down around 2 mm. Officially in thickness planing mode it can't go below 5 mm. To solve this problem (and protect the machine) I screwed a small piece of wood to an 10mm MDF to work as an anchor and put it into the machine. It works fine. Obviously you have to double check the grain directions and you only want to use wood with nice, straight grains, but it works fine. For other situations just use a thickness-sander.
Great tips! Thank you!
Thank you Brett!
Add a finger groove on one of the the tapered edges to improve the grip
Nice touch with the grit noise
Editors idea!
Great video
Thank you
This was worth watching. Thanks.
Thanks Craig. Glad you clicked even though the shot wasn’t straight. 🤦♂️
@@wittworks hey, you asked for my opinion, I gave one but in the end, it's your name on the channel not mine. Thanks for asking.
😎
Sanding tacos, yum!
That’s funny. Maybe that should be the official product name. 🤔
Instead of a tile go to your local marble countertop installer. You can usually get their scraps for little to nothing and they are exceptionally smooth and flat.
Fantastic idea.
And in addition to being a teacher, I have a knife, sharpening side hustle. You can kind of sharpen your knives on there. You would need to strop them with compound on another disc or even just a bench strop.
Cool. My friend has a worksharp belt system I think. I just hand my knife to him 🤦♂️
@@wittworks I saw you have an older vid with a disc sharpener and leather disc. Did you give up on that?
Nope I love it. This is just a cheaper idea I wanted to share
@@wittworks I meant with the knives 😄
Great set of handy tips, and thanks so much for the shout! For a super-thin but strong variation on the bondo spreader you can use a metal filler knife, too. 👌👍
Great idea!
A piece of glass makes a good flat surface for a lapping plate
Such great tips to ease the burdensome sanding experience. Loving your content.
You would know.
I was watching one of your older videos and I think you mentioned San Antonio being hot during the summer. Where about do you live in SA? Im over on the north side near The Forum. Also love watching your videos. Great work!
East of downtown. Thank you!
A drum sander is the perfect piece of equipment for sanding thin stock. I do quarter of an inch regularly
Awesome. I’ve been eying the supermax 16/32
nice! got a makita track saw on Black Friday and will check out your shop after I've had a chance to use it.
That’s great!
Get the sp6000?
@@bsdbryn I did. I went corded since I don't have anything other battery operated Makita tools.
I still use my corded for most things.
@@blayne2029 me too! Still in the box. Trying to justify the purchase to myself 😆. I’ll open it before too long.
Is that a Barbra Mandrel ?😮
That idea of using the drill press jig in combo with the digital protractor to sharpen chisels is pure genius.
Thank you Doug. It wasn’t my original idea. I saw Mike Taylor use it one time. Way cheaper than my $120 worksharp station.
I hate building things. I love having just built something and having it turn out well. Are there any hacks that will help me skip the step where I had to build something, so I can immediately enjoy having just built something? Thanks!
Ha! Yes. It’s called IKEA.
Scratch that. That’s more frustrating.
The end is near.
@@wittworks It’s similar to writing. I hate the act of writing. Or getting started writing. But I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes from having written something. So what do I do? I buy writing software. I buy pens and notepads. I accumulate a lot of writing tools. And I watch endless writing tip videos.
Sound an awful lot like me and woodworking. 😂
Great video! As a connoisseur of fine sanding, I must say your tips will help me enjoy future sanding engagements! Keep up the great videos!
Thanks 👍 I've never heard anyone say "enjoy" and "sanding" in the same sentence!
If you can't make the drill press disk holder you can get the same thing through Taylor Tools.
or from me :) it was actually Mike's idea and he let me do it before him
Be careful using large format tiles as a flat surface. They are commonly not that flat as they tend to curl a bit when they are baked. The usual 12"x12" tiles (or smaller) are fine, though.
oooohhh...that digital angle gauge with the reading all over the place with sparks flying...so good, so good!
great tips btw, but I'm lovin the snark.
Thank you! Yeah the angle gauge was tricky. Good enough for weekend warriors. Serious chisel people already have their preferred set up.
You want in on a secret source of free solid heavy flat lapping surfaces? Visit your local countertop stone cutters and ask if you can take a "sample" from their dumpster. When the wife and I were looking for countertops for our kitchen remodel we debated the colors and how they might look in our kitchen. They pointed to their dumpster and said take as much as you like. I grabbed a few different pieces a couple about 10" wide and 40" long. I now have Carrera quartzite inch and half thick window sills that cost me 15 minutes in a dumpster full of granite and quartzite. I also snagged a nice roughly 10x15" piece of dead flat quartzite as my lapping surface. I hadn't thought about it before; but, small "unsellable" remnants have to be disposed of somehow. So, they just throw them in a dumpster.
Fantastic tip! You should go dumpster diving and start a lapping surface online store. Wait. The shipping cost would suck. Nevermind. 🤦♂️
The thin stock dimensioning is great thanks!
I have a 12" 1700 rpm benchtop disc sander and was wondering what grit you would recommend for thin sheets of polystyrene? I'm sanding pieces from model kits. It came with an 80 grit disc and it's been a very "melty" experience, however it's been great for metals and wood. I wish they made those 3M discs bigger than 8"!
Hey man, cool tips and shit but keep in mind that your drill press is getting a lot of force in directions different than it was designed for.
Add a bearing that will match the bolt to hold it in place. Or not, it's your workshop. Also this tricks works with the dowel as well - vertical drum sander. Yay
Cheers
Great video, simple yet functional. When I saw your opening photo I immediately thought of sharpening a chisel or plane blade, but instead of a plastic or wood base I thought what if the round was made of a corian scrap. This would be a perfectly flat surface. I’m going to try it. Also the drill press can be slowed down so that your sharpening is not as fast or aggressive. Thanks again. Greetings from Maine.
the corian scrap would be great!
Or you could score it with the back edge of the utility blade.
I just watched the part of the video about the drill press sanding disk and I thought it was really cool so I paused the video and ordered one. Can't wait to get it. Thank you.
Thank you bro. Nice name. Saw your order today.
@@wittworks Drew is not a super popular name so when I saw your name was Drew it made me chuckle a little bit.
Thanks for the awesome sanding tips Drew!! I've recently been 3d printing a bunch of sanding jigs but sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. Can't wait to go out and make myself some sandy tacos!
That’s great! 🌮
@@wittworks oh man! Since I got over the 30 year old hill "🌮" scare me, they might as well be 🚽🪠 but I think I might be ok with these kind. 😂

These are some great jig ideas! Awesome video!
Thank you. They’re Mike Taylor’s idea
Wow! Your channel really is growing. Another great video. Thanks for the tips, excellent
Thanks!
Great tips, very informative thanks once again!
I’m glad things are finally starting to pick up for you! I couldn’t believe the small the reviews you had on your channel a few months ago. Congrats!
I don’t always sand but when I do I’ll use some of those great tips. Well done. I use the disk and drum sanding all the time on my drill press.
I picked up a cheap Wen belt sander that has clamps for mounting it inverted to your bench. I have used it as a shaper more than any other use. Go figure!
Thank you Pastor Witt! As a connoisseur of "sanding hate", I appreciate any tiny tastes of some ingredient to soften the gamey flavor of general sanding. These sound yummy!
Edit: Just noticed "DW Wood Builds" comment from some time before mine, and the striking similarity between our two comments. We're coming from slightly different angles, but agree for the most part. I did not mean to plagiarize, and will delete this comment if DW Wood Builds requests it.
Thank you.
“Nothing new under the sun”
I've never met a person who actually likes sanding. Awesome tips! Really liked the last tip with the dimensioning of thin stock.... looks like you're maybe running it through a groove or dado but I would think a drill press fence would work nicely as well.
Thank you. Yes I made a quick dado because I wasn’t sure if a fence was enough. It shot that thing through!
@@wittworks ha! okay well i'll have to remember that before trying this trick then. Thanks for the great content! I really appreciate your contributions to the community.
Thank you
Great video, really was not expecting that given the title.
You have an awesome personality. Glad I stumbled on your channel.
Thank you so much!
the part where you change the clarity of the screen when talking about the grits LOL, had to watch it again. Nice touch!
Haha. That was the editors idea!
THANKS! At 4:34, you just solved a problem I am about to have. I have to sand some dado's in a small cabinet/box. The sanding file is perfect for my situation.
thats great!
Great video, your presentations are enjoyable
Thank you very much!
All great ideas! Thank you. I love it. ❤
Thank you
Great stuff. Thanks for some practical & cost efficient ideas. Cheers!
Thank you! Not everything has to be expensive.
Now back to my Festool sanders…
Sanding is the love and respect that you put into your project. Do not look at sanding as a laborious activity that you hate! It is all about perspective. When you take the time to sand a project you are putting your sole and inspiration into the project.
Those that do not spend the time finessing the contour are missing out on the true art of perfecting their talents.
Where did I put that 36 grit flap disk For my grinder? I am fished sanding that refinish job on the grand piano, it is done! 🤣🛫
Another great video, love the jigs and finding ways to get to those areas that are often troublesome and time consuming makes it a great watch.
Thank you Jack!
I went to a shop that makes stone countertops. They had stacks and stacks of sink cutouts sitting outside. They said $5 and you can take whichever one you want. It's crazy heavy to carry around, but it's great for sanding the bottom of hand planes, or anything else I need to be flat.
Brilliant.
I went to a stone/marble/granite/tile shop and noticed that they had 1' x 2' sample ceramic tiles. They gave me one for nothing. Great lapping plate; holds two full sheets of sandpaper. I also found a junk printer on the sidewalk and harvested its tempered-glass platen. Big enough for one sheet.
Love the videos. Also, I cant wait to use the track saw guides i got from you
Thank you! I will make some of these, who am I kidding. I will just go to your store. I am looking forward to the using the bondo scraper trick. Thanks Drew!
Glad you like it!
Another fun & informative video. Glad to see that you're adding to your product line. - Chris
Thank you Chris!
Nice little editing touch adding noise to visualize grit levels!
So subtle but you got it!
You can also use a granite counter top off cut if you want to for the lapping setup
Totally! That’s what I had at my last shop but can’t find it. Probably in a box. I’ll find it tomorrow when I’m not looking for it. 😩
@@wittworks I have the off cut from where they installed our kitchen sink area. Can’t wait to put it on one of my recent cabinet builds. Love the drill press sander for thin stock
Whoa I did not expect to see the same exact tile that's in one of the bathrooms in my house...😂 Great content, love to see easy ways to make something that no one really really wants too do (like sanding) easier. And on the topic of sharpening chisels and such the disk sander on the drill press is a viable option, it's best however to have a toolrest of some sort if you don't want to freehand it and just for bevel angle consistency. Perhaps a video I should make.
Thanks! Yes I’ve been thinking about how to make a tool rest jig.
I want to see a video of you sanding a small part on your bathroom wall with sandpaper stuck to it.
😁 Sanding Tips…@Wittworks #shorts #diy
ua-cam.com/users/shortsEs1DuWI2EnQ?feature=share
I purchased a used one as the piece is a bit pricey, but the machine ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxG6fbm3cHBd7CNTjk5D-dwYe9c9tCB9ZN has surpassed my expectations. We sand small parts by hand often, sized around 1"x1/2," and specifically look for a piece that's designed to be vertical. The motor has plenty of torque and great speed settings. The only inconvenience I had is that the disk measures 5" where we trim 6" stick-and-sand disks down easily by mounting it then cutting with a box cutter.

Received my sanding block today! Very nice, thank you!
Awesome!
My biggest takeaway from this video was seeing a digital angle gauge attached to a chisel being sharpened!
Thanks! That was Mike Taylor’s idea! I saw him do it a few months back.
I think I see a bora centipede mft style table top in a lot of your videos. Don't remember seeing it in your shop tour video. I've been trying to find some good review videos of them, but all the ones I find suck. Mind doing a review of yours?
Hey! Good eye! I've been using it as my "primary" since July to get a feel for it. I filmed the shop tour in June. I plan on doing a review in the new year on it. Just bought a second top and the 4x8 base as well. There's some things I like and a few small I don't - but overall I think it works well for it's intended use.
@@wittworks love how it can cater to small spaces by folding down and the fact that you can expand up to a 4x8. Just curious how accurate the dog holes are compared to an MFT3. Rather not have to buy a UJK Parf Guide or another jig, when you can just buy one of these 2x4 table tops for as low as $50ish dollars when on sale.
@@stephenkim7502 thats why I bought it. I have the 3/4" dog hole and the 20mm dog hole. Havent checked accuracy yet and don't have anything like the MFT3 to compare - but it is clean and CNCed - so I'm THINKING it's spot on. We shall see!
Very cool👍🏻
Thank you
What's the max RPM on those acrylic disks? I bet something like that could work on a CNC
Not sure. That’s an interesting use case…
@@wittworks I'm up in Austin if you want me to try to get some footage.
3:54 urine luck 😆 😂
🤓
You gonna sand that with 220?
220. 221. Whatever it takes.
My only thought aside from “get creative with sticky back sanding disks” is that any person who can buy/feed a drill press can invest the 15$ in a cheap eclipse knock off jig to grind new primaries on their chisels sticking that sandpaper to a piece of glass and you’re in there like swimwear. I’m just saying that suggesting that someone use a mandrelled disk with cubitron sanding disks to maintain chisels on their drill press is serious reaching brother and sadly the ones who’ll take you up on the idea are the guys who’d benefit far better from a 5 minute video on how to clean up the casting on a pot metal eclipse jig so it will secure a chisel. I hate to be a hater on this one brother, but I feel like that one was a swing and miss. I normally find your content entertaining and I subscribe just for that reason (I’m a maker too and you make content in the maker space that may not always benefit me, but I’m always entertained 👍) I did really appreciate the idea recently to use more permanent double side tape like the fast cap and others where I might otherwise have used the super 77 or loctite spray. There are still places where the spray adhesive is the way to go, but I’ve already used your idea in a few jigs/etc and appreciate the time saving/mess & fume reduction.
Just my 2¢
You doing okay?
