Usually in F1 it's either the best driver in the best car or just the best car winning. Seeing the best driver not be in the quickest car and still keep winning like Max has done this season is something you get to see very rarely. Even though I'm a McLaren fan, I hope that people appreciate what Max is doing right now and how special it is.
I am a Verstappen fan, I do. I also know that it can't go on like this. Verstappen got helped by mistakes from McLaren and Norris in the last 2 races, they will get their shit together soon and Norris will start winning races. Red Bull needs to step up if they want that constructors title. and even the drivers' title could become a struggle.

I was thinking Lando might've got the win if George had got on with it but he was funky and Lando lost more than 3 seconds behind him. Or you could say McLaren lost the winning margin in the pits.

I'm honestly baffled with all this talk of the "second fastest car"... They're pretty equal, in fact the race simulation showed red bull slightly ahead of mclaren and they were almost evenly matched during qualifying... Perez can't handle the RB20, but neither could Piastri this weekend, that doesn't make the RB20 a slower car than the MCL38... In fact, unlike the RB20, the MCL38 didn't have any upgrades this weekend. Yes, Max is making the difference in the RB20, but so is Lando in the MCL38... We saw today in 4 different races that the grid spot for P1 in Barcelona is badly chosen, happened in F3, F2 and F1A as well, just because the left side is the racing line during the race, it doesn't mean its the optimal side for the race start, which is shown by the fact that it wasn't hamilton behind Lando that could make the most of the slipstream on that long rununtil Turn 1, but Russel from P4, behind Max... 600 meters into a pretty fast right hander, by starting on the left side, you already have a longer way to get to Turn 2 than P2 on the grid... Lando didn't get DOTD for losing position by Turn 1, he got it by driving an amazing race after that, getting back to P2 even with that weird gamble on trying the uppercut on a track that is known for having a strong undercut potential. Max did one overtake besides getting past lapped cars, Lando did a ton, driving in dirty air and STILL getting back to 2 seconds behind Max, who had clean air for most of the race, except for some backmarkers towards the end. That overtake by Lando on Russel alone should be enough for DOTD

Its not a DotD performance to start on P1, bottle the start immediately to land on p3, not getting past P2 for WAY to long and then refusing the undercut SEVERAL TIMES despite being notified about this losing him position (again several times).

My takeaways: Checo hasnt gone off a cliff since signing, hes been falling for over a year. Lando lost the race at the start by not covering off George. Russell getting ahead pushed him too far behind Max, meaning the obvious tire advantage they have was not an issue for Max to deal with. If he covers off George and lets max stay ahead, he stays several seconds closer and probably ends up winning or fighting with 3-4 laps to go. Russell ruined his race and its Landos fault. Going long was the right decision for Mclaren, they have superior tire wear. They can give up time early and gain more back later. Alpine...impreased tbh DotD - why do we even care about the fake award?
Perez was only looking good when Red Bull had a dominant car. As soon as Red Bull fall back closer to others, Perez is showing he is pretty bad, worse than Bottas at Mercedes I argue. At this point Perez has the Red Bull seat just because of his marketability in Latin America, as well as keeping Max happy, having an easy teammate.

Does Red Bull care about the constructors? I know we are always told they do, but to the average fan winning the drivers championship is THE win. So if Red Bull can win the drivers with Max, keep the Checo merch and sponsorship flowing, and get more wind tunnel time to boot, thats still a win in my mind even if you lose the constructors championship.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Charles complained about the strategy in the first pitstop. Because they were talking about 2 plans but than it was 3 plan. But he made the call for soft, they wanted to give him hards same as for Carlos, but he wanted softs.
They signed Perez because he backs Horner and doesn’t cause any internal chaos. Carlos isn’t a team player. But he’s quick. So that might cause some friction. And Carlos Sr. and Marko have a bad history from 2015 because he spread false rumors to the Spanish media about Max going to Ferrari to increase his son’s chances to get the RBR seat. While Sainz had nothing to do with that, he’ll likely never race for them ever again. They hold grudges.

Norris lost his race when he was joking with his engineer about what strategy to take. When Max boxed for the last set of softs lando was about 4/5 seconds behind. If Mclaren boxed Norris right in that lap or the next one, he only would have to gain 5 seconds which we saw that he could until the end of the race... Don't understand why teams are always trying to be the next genius and not following what's more logic.
I think it’s like Mercedes said to the rumors that are sabotaging Lewis, why on earth would RB sabotage Checo, they need him to score in order to win the Championship, as does Mercedes with Lewis. It is possible that Max get new parts a race or two earlier, because they don’t have enough, but that’s it.
Everyone saying that McLaren was the fastest car but the whole race it looked inseparable between them and Red Bull, with Merc only a fraction behind. Max is an absolute beast no doubt, but Lando was driving like a man unleashed and hunting down Max in every stint. His commitment to getting the win seriously impressed me and I can’t wait to see this developing over the rest of the season. But for now it just looks like a more level playing field, that Max just happens to be very comfortable on.
I enjoyed Ruth Buscombe’s strategy analysis and updates especially for this race, she adds a level of depth to the commentary that helped it feel a little more exciting

I found it odd that several drivers were able to do soft - med - soft, and some other drives(on the same team) did soft - med - hard. Several of the people that ran hard tires at the end pitted after people had already gone back to softs. If they thought those tires might fall off a cliff before the end of the race, why didn't they do soft - med - med? I assume they didn't have the sets saved or something, but it seemed strange that no one finished on the medium tires.
Max has the same crap to deal right now like Schumacher did when he was winning for Ferrari... He had 2 dominant seasons and now people think it's the car.... It's clear that the whole team works to perfection, but qualifying and race pace shows that the battle is much closer
Best overtake definitely Lando on Russel tho. That was some excitement. Just wish Mclaren didn't do that 3.6 pitstop on Lando 😬 (pit crew will be feeing bad for that becauae that extra time could have brought Lando within drs if Max by the end)

The reality is that yeah, overall max drove best today. However aside from the start Lando drove quite well. But more than that, Lando, because of his strategy was basically coming from behind most of the race. We saw him battle other drivers like the Mercedes, (great battle with George) and also put in laps catching max. He was where the excitement and tension came from this race and I think as a result that’s why people were entertained and why they voted for him.
It's not about who the best driver is, it's about who gave the most entertainment, because you know F1 is there to entertain. Landos drive today was the most exciting and thereby the most entertaining. I don't get why people think its about who had the best drive. If it was just a popularity contest wouldn't the Orange Army put Max in the top 3 every week given their size and fanaticism?

That’s the difference with RBR. They know what they’re doing. Max trusts them. And RBR trusts Max because they know he can execute a difficult strategy. McLaren is indecisive. They give Norris way too much input. They need to let Norris focus on driving and give him the strategy and tools to win.
As soon as I heard him say he was racing Max, at that point I was just shaking my head, it was so obvious this wasn't going to be realistic any longer.

Norris lost his race when he was joking with his engineer about what strategy to take. When Max boxed for the last set of softs lando was about 4/5 seconds behind. If Mclaren boxed Norris right in that lap or the next one, he only would have to gain 5 seconds which we saw that he could until the end of the race... Don't understand why teams are always trying to be the next genius and not following what's more logic.
I don't think verstappen can do anything to get driver of the day now...

I think it’s like Mercedes said to the rumors that are sabotaging Lewis, why on earth would RB sabotage Checo, they need him to score in order to win the Championship, as does Mercedes with Lewis. It is possible that Max get new parts a race or two earlier, because they don’t have enough, but that’s it.
Everyone saying that McLaren was the fastest car but the whole race it looked inseparable between them and Red Bull, with Merc only a fraction behind. Max is an absolute beast no doubt, but Lando was driving like a man unleashed and hunting down Max in every stint. His commitment to getting the win seriously impressed me and I can’t wait to see this developing over the rest of the season. But for now it just looks like a more level playing field, that Max just happens to be very comfortable on.
Fastest car yet Piastri (who’s been excellent this season) barely got the Alpines and was nowhere near Sainz

I found it odd that several drivers were able to do soft - med - soft, and some other drives(on the same team) did soft - med - hard. Several of the people that ran hard tires at the end pitted after people had already gone back to softs. If they thought those tires might fall off a cliff before the end of the race, why didn't they do soft - med - med? I assume they didn't have the sets saved or something, but it seemed strange that no one finished on the medium tires.
I think more Teams thought that hards would be okay but Russell proved that wrong …. So they had to avoid them
all top ten had either 1 new hard 1 new medium, 4 used softs, or they had 1 new hard, 1 new medium, 1 new soft, 3 used soft for the race
I like that the Senna Lego car is functionally accurate in that you can pop the steering wheel of in the middle of a race.
Max has the same crap to deal right now like Schumacher did when he was winning for Ferrari... He had 2 dominant seasons and now people think it's the car.... It's clear that the whole team works to perfection, but qualifying and race pace shows that the battle is much closer

The reality is that yeah, overall max drove best today. However aside from the start Lando drove quite well. But more than that, Lando, because of his strategy was basically coming from behind most of the race. We saw him battle other drivers like the Mercedes, (great battle with George) and also put in laps catching max. He was where the excitement and tension came from this race and I think as a result that’s why people were entertained and why they voted for him.

That’s the difference with RBR. They know what they’re doing. Max trusts them. And RBR trusts Max because they know he can execute a difficult strategy.
McLaren is indecisive. They give Norris way too much input. They need to let Norris focus on driving and give him the strategy and tools to win.
Norris has a tendency to fuck up pitstop strategies. He should have won Russia 21 and this year in Canada and Barcelona.
As soon as I heard him say he was racing Max, at that point I was just shaking my head, it was so obvious this wasn't going to be realistic any longer.
You can tell McLaren is not used to fight for wins, their strategy is nowhere near as fine tuned as Red Bull's in a game of fine margins.
