Larger knives perform better in self defense / combat situations. For those who think the mayhem is to large or impractical for martial applications, then carry a nail clipper keychain knife instead and join the Girl Scouts.
Carrying knives only for self defense is silly imo. Has to have some practical use as well or it's goofy. Martial arts > knife bullshido A gun is the only thing someone should carry for self defense, a knife can land yourself in some trouble unless it's undeniable self defense where your life is unquestionably in danger.
This video couldn’t have come out at a better time. I won a 5max yesterday from Cold Steel. I’m even more excited to receive it after watching this video.
Very good evaluation. The Mayhem is for fun, in my opinion; it's an awesome Collector. The 5-Max is the one to get if you want an Heavy-Duty Folder for Heavy-Duty Tasks! I totally agree with your evaluation. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
Love the blade shape of the Mayhem, but like you, would prefer a four inch version. I love big folders, but these are getting too big for me. If I had to chose, I'm going with the 5Max.
Well I wouldn't call the tip of the mayhem fragile since that was a lot of abuse to put onto the tip of that knife Now with that being said I did expect a Cold Steel knife to perform better during that test but that hasn't discouraged me from buying several MayHem Knives in Aus-10 and S35vn
I'm not surprised, since GSM's blade designers obviously DID NOT thoroughly test their prototypes, if they ever made a prototype for the Mayhem in the first place. Lynn Thompson and the old Cold Steel crew would've done the proper testing on prototypes of any design before releasing to the public.
@lordtartarsauceb8348 Any blade steel will snap with such inappropriate tip geometry for hard use. Clearly GSM designers just thought up a "badass" design, and didn't bother to make some prototypes for testing to make any improvements on the design.
I carry my 4max scout every day I'm hoping they make a 5max scout version Happy Thanksgiving and may the LORD CHRIST JESUS Bless you and your family Aaron
For the above two knives I choose the 5 Max as the winner...but anyway I still love my CS 4 Max Scout and it is the perfect knife for me! Love Cold Steel 💙
The Voyager XL series offers much of the same extra reach/burliness at much lower weight (and cost)...but i'd still be interested to see Lite/Scout versions of these knives, preferably with the minimal steel liners kinda like the Range Boss to save some real weight.
Thanks Aaron and Nate. I'm a fan of Cold Steel's big ole honkin' folders and have several myself, including the Rajah II. Even so, the Mayhem is doin' too much. Can't envision carrying it for any reason.
12:18 The clip attached to the handle of the knife has a groove design. Use your index finger to lean against the groove and your thumb to pinch the handle on the other side to quickly pull the knife out of your pocket. After throwing out the blade, you can hold it at the end of the handle, which is helpful for self-defense This is the same design as COLD STEEL folding knives with 5.5-inch or 6-inch blade lengths
@@johnvillafranca6188 I need your deep pockets!! 😂 Could only afford the mayhem at $199. Hopefully they will make the 5 max in aus10 so I can afford one. I like the 5 max more but couldn't afford the $350 price tag.

This is not a dilemma - get one of each like I did! 😁 (And I got a S35VN version - #223 - of the Mayhem; it’s black & red scales vs. the black & gray of the AUS10 version). Love them both…

Great review! I’m surprised the tip on the Mayhem broke so easily even though the tip is thin it should have never broke that easy. The 5Max would be my choice between the two. I’m still not sold on the Atlas lock. I had three 3.5 inch S35VN Engages that all came from GSM website (Cold Steel) brand new. 2 of them were warranty replacements and every one of them created up and down blade play that could not be fixed. GSM sent out replacements that took forever but the replacements after normal use had the same issue. After three Engages with the Atlas lock and all of them having the same issue I have to think I didn’t just got a bad one . Great honest review 👍🏻👍🏻
I think scaled up to Mayhem size the Atlas lock works fine. For the Engage's size they need to either adjust the Atlas lock design or put in a much stronger spring. A stronger spring would make it more annoying to use however.
Not gonna bash the Mayhem cause a lot of friends of mine like and have them but, it never really caught my attention and then, Aaron your tip test, was the nail in the coffin! But now the 5 Max! That caught my attention the moment I saw it. And I'm talking about the only one in existence which Jimi Slash posted over a year ago! Had to have it, and I do!!! Again guys, GREAT VIDEO...
I have modded the Mayhem and so carry it as an EDC. My mods make for an easier more comfortable carry. The Atlas lock is awesome. I have the s35VN limited edition and highly recommend it because of the steel upgrade. I can front flip mine now because of the mod and am adding a spyderco hole where the thumb stud was. Removing the area of the handle by the pivot now allows me to do a two finger choke up choil and so my thumb rests on the previous useless jumping on the spine mod has made it so much more practical
weird thing is, so many “heavy duty” folders harbour high carbide steel(Strider Hinderer New coldsteel(old ones are AUS8, not so much carbide)), which is a paradox. If they chose Nitro-V AEB-L 420HC etc. these knives would be closer to what advertised. e.g. the mayhem tip probably would not break if it is 420HC
First of all, EXCELLENT REVIEW! You and your bro work great together. I'm going with the 5Max guys! Not knocking the Mayhem but the 5Max got my attention "BIG TIME" from the very first time I saw it, grail blade status... Thank you Midway, I finally got mine (be here next week)! Again, great review ❤!!!
I would carry the 5max! I carry my 4max a lot and have really been eyeing a 5max for when I’m really on one. I’m fully stuck between these two knives. I think I’d use the 5 max more, but I really want to try out that atlas lock. Looks like a fun day of testing guys!
I split some small pieces of wood with my spartan just playing around and accidentally bumped the thumb stud on it. One little bump popped the head of the bolt off and the thumb stuf went flying. Thankfully i found it and took it to work to weld it back on. No more goofing around with a folding knife when I have plenty of fixed blades and hatchets to choose from
The spartan is a little thin for that - the 4 max can cut/prep kindling pretty effectively. Splitting logs is what axes are designed for. Use the right tool for the job as they say 😉
They are both awesome knives and if I could afford to spend just for cool factor, I’d buy both. I can’t see myself really using them much though. I think I would feel much safer using a six inch fixed blade for harder use, and carrying a smaller folder for the normal stuff. Great video guys!

Thanks for the video and the information from the tests. The tip of the mayhem seems to be a bit to fragile for my taste. I didnt expect it to break so easily. There are some other knives desgned by self defence gurus with very thin tips. Then I can understand and appreciate it if the whole knife is very purpose desinged/specialised for a one time self defense scenario or something. But the cold steel mayhem looks a bit more like a user knife I would use to chop down things without beeing careful. It doesnt look like a sophisticated self defence design but like a brutal big chopping thing. If the tip breaks so easily this seems like a bad design choice for a big chopper like that. So I m happy with my espada large instead and dont need the mayhem. Also I think the 4Max or the Sr1 can do similar work and withstand similar impact like the 5max but they seems to be a bit more balanced.

Recon1 is IMO their best model, it excels at actual knife tasks, is strong enough for reasonably heavy tasks, and nimble enough to truly do intricate/delicate tasks. It's got a great ergonomic handle and is thin enough to comfortably pocket.
Come now Boys, those are both nice knives. But compared to the Espada XL, that has a 7.5 inch blade, with a handle that is 9.25 inches, so an over all length of 16.75 inches, then come talk to me about a Pocket Sword. I love mine :) For stabbing and chopping with a folding knife. I believe the Rajah II would be the winner, blade down. Since it is a Folding Khukuri :) Oh come now, I believe the Rajah II with the 6 inch Khukuri style blade, is much scarier. And don't get me started on the Espadea XL :)
