Hi, Cathal, I can only encourage you to go on singing and playing... What you need is a bit more power and confidence but that is a matter of time... Your talent has clearly been seen and heard in the sessions with your brother and your solo renditions, so just be courageous enough to show us your talent again and again! Best wishes from Berlin, Germany!

Select songs YOU want to sing - whether traditional or off the wall - you will sing what you like far better than anything you are told to sing. As you see the audience grow, you will begin to sing to them and not to your mic. However, some songs you HAVE to sing to an individual in the audience - work it out. In your bedroom/studio it's hard - so put a picture on the far wall and sing to that. As your voice develops you will project it more and strengthen it - reach out to that person at the back of the venue. Understanding emotion is key - both what it is, and how to impart it as you sing. Each song has 1 or more different emotional focus'. Singers are meant to be manipulators of emotion. Keep the mic just below your mouth so you sing just across it - your audience needs to see your mouth. Understand the lyrics, the story they tell, the emotions built in [ anger, pain, love, happiness, etc..] so you know how to sing it. Take a look at James Blunt's Monsters for a lesson in emotional singing. Above all, you have to want to do this - that's a big slice of the battle. You are mid teens? Your voice has a lot of development to go so don't be surprised if you listen to something from today in 5 years and you no longer sound the same. If you need a backing track instead of learning the guitar track then use it, You don't HAVE to accompany yourself on every song. Treat your voice with respect - no late nights, sleep long enough for it to be well rested, keep it hydrated with water instead of sugary drink. No smoking, no drinking [ ok, maybe the occasional beer ], don't strain it & no Red Bull type products. If unwell then don't sing. Treat it with respect. If your mates want a drunken late night smoking dope, then you have to decide between your voice and their pressure to be 1 of the boys. Nearly all the best singers out there had and still have voice coaches/singing teachers. Try and find 1, even if only an hour a month. If yo can successfully sing for YOUR pleasure as well as the audience, then you have cracked it.
