I think the best part is that it IS a good assasins creed game, it explores the pirate fantasy while not ignoring the assassin fantasy like the RPG games do
Really loved the video as always !! Why wouldn't I? AC4 has always been my favourite of the series, followed by brotherhood and revelations :) . One slight nit-pick tho, the phrase "Nothing is true, everything is permitted" was NOT conjured up by some french dudes in a room. Its a rephrasing of "Nothing is an absolute reality; Everything is permitted" which is a phrase/maxim believed to be the last words of Hassan i-Sabbah , the creator of Assassin or "Hashashin"(Hope im spelling this right) order. Its evident in the book "Alamut" by Vladimir Bartol(which was an inspiration for the Assassin's Creed series), and can also be found to be quoted by Nietzche in some of his works, attributed to the Order of the Assassin's . Both Nietzche quoting it and the publishing of the book, are events of the 1930's, which is a time when games were not really being made, but the events taking place in real life WOULD BE made into games 70~80 years later :) . This channel deserves a lot more attention tho , will be waiting for the next video :) EDIT:typo
I appreciate the support! I should have made it more clear in the video that I was referring to the general Creed the Assassins follow in the series, not just the phrase itself. I knew the phrase existed but in my research I've never heard of a group of people ever using the words as a philosophy around which to structure one's life. And the tenets of the Creed weren't something I was able to find a basis for in reality. But I'm no expert! If it actually has been used in the context this series portrays it I'd love to know more!
@@TheBakeryASMR Hey ! First off, thanks for taking notice of my comment ! I am no expert either in the history of assassins but in the course of time and just a few curious questions here and there, I did learn a bit(most of it which i wrote in my original comment,it isn't much, but its honest work) . Even I would like to learn more about the order and how it came bout and the political and social scenarios which culminated in its formation, the book which inspired the game "Alamut" is a great starting point, but unfortunately I haven't had time to go through it, and altho I did know of Nietzche and him being a pioneer of nihilist philosophy, him actually quoting the Assassin maxim was a very recent find for me, and so again unfortunately I haven't had time to delve further :( . I think if we really tried to interpret it in different ways, the maxim would show up in different forms in many pieces of media, the first thing which comes to mind is "Fight Club" , the movie based on Chuck Palanhuik's book of the same name, and also my favourite movie of all time. With a part of it being how capitalist consumerism is useless and how we all are stuck thinking about things which really don't mean anything at all.(altho the movie is a lot more than that, its amazing). We could also talk bout "Matrix" and all other pieces of media which have in some way potrayed simulation, which is also surprisingly a part of the very series we are talking bout ! Ofc like all philosophies , nothing is fully applicable to all sorts of situations, its what we use and interpret them as, and oh fricky shmichk did I just utter the maxim in a different way without realizing XD I would delve into the things if I do get time, and ofc you should too, its just rabbitholes everywhere :) Will be eager for your next video ! P.S - Sorry if there are any typos :)
This is by far my favorite ac. Think I was always enamored by pirates growing up with the Disney movies and then as I got older this game. Really took me back to my childhood and touched me in a way that very few games have. Watching this video after all this time brought those feelings back and for that I thank you.
I think there is a reason when someone says Assassins Creed I think about this game first (sometimes 2 or Unity). It truly embodies of what this series could and should have been. 2 - Revelations is great and all but I play these games for the world to explore and immerse myself in a historical place I dream of visiting. The golden age of piracy is far from my favorite time period but something about this game is so special.
This game man... This game is 10/10 for me. Recently i played it again and I have to say that the only thing I didnt like is, that I spend pretty much entire game focusing on other things than main story. I was focusing on Jackdaw and exploration etc... And then when I finished everything else the main story felt like 1hour long :DD Im rly glad I found your channel. Great video!!! Greetings from Czech Republic
Man I'd love to watch you just analyze every single AC game. I'm currently going through every game to 100%, most for the first time. So it is nice to look into others opinions. To note, this is my favorite AC game, only slightly above Rogue but that's more guilty pleasure than perfect AC to me. I can't put into words why I like this game, it just is a perfect mix of gameplay, visual setting, and story that just is life rather than a series of set pieces
I'm currently playing Origins and it's baffling the difference between it and AC4 when it comes to exploration. Just like you said, you feel compelled to explore and do side missions in AC4 because it all reinforces the feeling of being a pirate. In AC origins exploring is a chore because you basically have to do it to get a high enough level for the main story missions...
Since a game ranking would be so controversial with how this community gets, it might be a while before I do one. Because of that, i feel comfortable saying that AC2 is probably still my favorite, as generic as that is. I love the gameplay of Origins, the exploration and environment is amazing and it's incredibly immersive, and it is a great combination of both style AND substance. But the story, despite its strong parts, really falls apart quickly and I stopped caring about the narrative. It took two playthroughs to remember the villain's names because they had zero impact on me. AC4 conversely is my favorite story. I think it's great and I love the characters, it is the most well-done narrative in the series. However, the gameplay of AC3-Rogue isn't my favorite. Everything became so animation centered, and aside from ship gameplay there was no challenge. Combat was heavily simplified from the Ezio era, free running was heavily simplified, and in general there were prettier animations but the least control of the character in the series' history, and so it bogs the experience down for me. AC2, despite having neither the best gameplay nor story, is very well rounded. The story has holes and it's kind of choppy, but it is engaging beginning to end. The gameplay is outdated, but the controls are very tight and precise. It works well for its time and it holds up even better than some later games, and the nostalgia on top of that keeps me returning to it regularly. As much as I enjoy the new ideas that have come out of the franchise, AC2 is still the top for me.
@@TheBakeryASMR AC2 is probably my third favorite but I love your reasoning for why you like it so much. My personal favorite is Black Flag because of the story, characters, world, and soundtrack. However i really don’t like the combat or parkour. But the emotional weight of the story really makes it amazing. My full ranking is: 1. Black Flag 2. Origins 3. AC2 4. AC1 5: Brotherhood 6. Syndicate 7. Revelations 8. Unity 9. Rogue 10. Valhalla 11. AC3 12. Odyssey Also, since you’re making these in depth critique and thought videos about the games, I would like to see a video about how Odyssey is too big and branches off too far from Assassin’s Creed and into the RPG realm. If you wanted to make that, I would definitely love it! Just keep on making great content!
@@quizwizzash You know, large parts of our lists are very similar, but you may be disappointed in my opinion of Odyssey! I didn't play for well over a year due to fan reception, but it ended up getting me through the early parts of the pandemic. As a fan of in depth RPGs the RPG elements of AC seem very light to me, however I do have a problem with the bloated world and middle part of the story. And having waited so long, the grind people experienced was something I didn't have to deal with as much, so I didn't feel constricted like I would have if I had played the game at launch with the original leveling pace. But overall my impressions were positive, and even after 130 hours I actually went back to play the game all over again because of how much fun I had. Valhalla however I have more problems with. I'm 170 hours in on my one playthrough +DLC and a lot of its improvements over Odyssey seem like band aids to fan criticism, not actual fixes. Instead of providing a mix between the old and new styles, the game ends up watering down all the mechanics. I'd be more likely to make a critical video on the issues I have with Valhalla and the things I hope get changed as new installments are announced.
I believe this series is much better off when using the assassin's creed "lore" merely as a vehicle to explore and invigorate these historical settings rather than just an excuse to do the same things as usual with a different backdrop ... There's also something to be said for keeping things relatively grounded and authentic feeling, rather than going full fantasy like the latest entries
I agree. The lore isn't particularly strong and they adapt it pretty sloppily between games, and so I prefer when it reinforces the original stories and settings. And while I haven't been overly bothered by the less grounded elements, I do prefer smaller scale, more personal stories that dig into the era rather than the mythology.
