No. You're just blinded by nostalgia. There are good and bad things in every era. I have seen better 70s movies than 80s, for example. From all the modern era movies from 70s to today, the 80s has been the weakest for me, though of course there are great films in the 80s like Blade Runner and Akira.

Yeah BHC 4 Axel F is a return to why we all fell in love with the films as a whole as well as the Axel Foley character, good jokes, one liners, quick wits. Also pretty intriguing detail story about one of the task force behind the cop murder and distribution of drugs for the cartel.

It’s funny to think Joseph Gordon Levitt is 20 years older than Murphy was in the first 1 - he’s even way older than Taggart was and taggart was supposed to be the tired old guy
I didn’t hate it, but I can’t say I really liked it either. It had some good stuff going for it, but goddamn I hate that “hey, remember that thing from earlier movies!” shit. And Christ did this movie lean into that shit. For me, it REALLY hurt the movie. I literally facepalmed every time they did a callback, so I was facepalming a lot.
As a hefty dose of nostalgia, I liked it. It felt entirely unnecessary to me though and was way too late to try and bring back these characters. I don't feel like it ever really truly recaptured the magic. It's like one of those delicious five star dinners at whatever high priced restaurant when you get it to go, then you take it home and a day later try to reheat it. Sure it's the same food, but it's just not the same, something's not quite right. BHC 1 and 2 are among my favorite films of the 80s. There was a subtle dig at his 94 outing and how it wasn't received so well at one point in the movie, broke the 4th wall a little and that was funny but, yeah, I'd lump this in with 94.
I enjoyed the movie too but there was one little thing that caught my eye a few times. It may have just been me, but did anyone else notice some odd framing on some of the closeups? I noticed that quite a bit of the top of peoples heads were cut off due to framing. Didn't take anything away from the movie, just felt a little too close lol
I also noticed that, part of it was Netflix auto zoomed in on my phone but even towards the end and zoomed out Foley's head was partially cut off at points
The film tries to be "fresher" only as much as necessary, and otherwise recreates the atmosphere of the originals. It's even quite charming in that. All those clichés, put in here consciously, that slight naiveté familiar from 80s films... without trying to make a film completely serious or turn conventions upside down. It was fun.
Huge fan of this franchise! I’ve watched this twice now and you’re spot on about how this movie is not trying to reinvent the main characters to fit the time but rather have the exact same characters navigate through this very different time. You can just feel how Eddie, John, Judge & even Bronson slipped right back into their characters like an old pair of slippers! There was only 1 thing I was hoping to at least hear (or see) & Axcel only mentioned this once - who is Jane’s mother? Janice from BHC3 ?? - after all she was about to take him to the ‘tunnel of love’ at the end of the movie 🤪
This would've hit way stronger if I had seen this in a theater. Beverly Hills Cop was my childhood so I've been waiting for this. My viewing experience was just okay watching this at home. Not bad, not great.
I was taken aback when I saw your thumbs up in the thumbnail of the video. As someone who recently watched the first three Beverly Hills Cop movies, I can say this is on par with BHC 2.
This looks "good" (funny), but we're doing a Cyborg marathon today. Just found Cyborg 2 on Roku, &, bizarrely, my wife has never seen Cyborg 1. *I think that I had it on VHS long ago.
BHC 1 and 2 is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I wish it was in theaters like Top Gun Maverick. Was nervous Netflix released it since majority of their movies suck. So glad your review is positive.
@@LordLOC Yes I seen it many times. The first two are edgy and has the Eddie Murphy rated R style. The third seemed more PG 13. Plus only a few characters returning from the previous two movies. I hated it.
See, I think that's interesting. Most people are saying they "enjoyed" it...not that it's good. That's my feeling as well. I saw in in the theater and I really enjoyed it and there are a lot of things that I really like about it...however, would I say it is a "good" movie. Not really.
@69johndz Agree. I enjoyed it also but it was more about the nostalgia of seeing these characters together again because it sure wasn't the acting, the story and the jokes fell mostly flat for me. JGL was horrible but I actually really liked the actress that played Eddie's daughter. Her character wasn't very well written but I thought she made the material better.
Wasn't expecting much, but damned if I didn't enjoy Axel F. Heavy on callbacks, and nostalgia (I don't think there was one unique note in the soundtrack) which normally turns me off after so much, but for this I didn't mind. Eddie Murphy easily resumed his role as Axel as well as his other 80's cast mates. Joseph Gordon-Leveitt was excellent as well. Looking forward to Captain Foley of BHPD.
It is absolutely fantastic. The most enjoyable film I’ve seen in ages. Eddie Murphy rolling back the years to his comedic peak. I have a couple of minor quibbles but really, they’re very minor. Wonderful.
I enjoyed it. I wish Taggert didn't play the typical chief. He should have been pretending to be on the take or something to that effect. We didn't get the iconic laugh either, but thats ok.
Eddie did mention how everything needed to be right for another Beverly Hills Cop movie to come out and I'm glad they took their time with it. Anything rushed could've been as bad or worse than the 3rd film
I did get to watch this in a theater, since I live close to Pacific Palisades, and this was a great film to see at the movies, even if my mom and I were the only ones I could hear laughing. I honestly don't know why this wasn't given a bigger release. I want the DVD!
I was watching this and at one point I definitely was like, oh man, I really wish I was watching this in a theater. It was so good. And I’m a huge Beverly Hills Coo fan.
It's interesting to me that you say Axel's daughter isn't just a one note character and their relationship isn't just one note because I watched Sean Chandler's review and he was saying that he found her to be very one note and that was probably his biggest criticism of the film. Just a neat little observation.
The helicopter scenes were so well done. I genuinely watched it wondering how the hell they shot it without cgi. Truely great stunt work. Good movie as well
Excellent review, Dan. Pretty consistent and a very tough nut to crack - could have done with more laughs but probably much better than could reasonably be expected.
I agree if would be better with a crowd and in the theater. My wife and i watched it last night. we enjoyed it, but had a hard time staying engaged from our couch.
I didn’t think it was as funny as the first two, but the action scenes were spectacular. I’m so glad they didn’t pull a Die Hard 4 moment (John evading a fighter jet with a semi and somehow destroying it). Solid B. I will say the ticket cop at the beginning of the Beverly Hills moment had me rolling. She was awesome
I also thought that, but I'm kind of happy they didn't focus on relationship building between him and Fey's daughter. He played the part time partner to Foley and then was done after the case, and it also sets up another sequel if that's in Netflix's future for him to come back and have that resolution
@@ther3aper561 you're right. I kind of think having him in the hospital room with Foley would have been nice, maybe explaining fritters or something. The last scene of JGL in the movie is him shooting the villain and looking over in concern to Axel. Maybe JGL just wasn't available to film a final scene?
I really enjoyed it. A lot of people seem very mixed, but it felt like an 80s movie time traveled to today and that's what we got. Eddie Murphy has some legit laugh out loud moments and the lady playing his daughter is really acting well in it. It was pretty basic and you could tell the bad guy immediately, but hey sometimes a straightforward story is ok Hell, even the establishing shots and color grading are straight from the 80s
I think everyone knew Keven bacon was the bad guy the moment you saw his name during the credits. I mean he was so obviously the bad guy he was like I don't care if everyone knows lol
Fun fact: The kid at the beginning who flips off Foley and says “Fuck you Foley!” was me! Happy you enjoyed the film Dan!

Janice from BHC3 ?? - after all she was about to take him to the ‘tunnel of love’ at the end of the movie 🤪
Wow I thought this was really bad. Guess I missed the magic.
No you didn't miss the magic. It was absolute garbage.
Top Gun 2-Hit the mark. Ghostbusters- Hit the Mark .Axel F- Hit the mark. Back to the Greaties.
This would've hit way stronger if I had seen this in a theater. Beverly Hills Cop was my childhood so I've been waiting for this. My viewing experience was just okay watching this at home. Not bad, not great.
Loved it!
I was taken aback when I saw your thumbs up in the thumbnail of the video. As someone who recently watched the first three Beverly Hills Cop movies, I can say this is on par with BHC 2.
BCH 2 was better, but I still enjoyed BCH 4
It was a great movie
This looks "good" (funny), but we're doing a Cyborg marathon today. Just found Cyborg 2 on Roku, &, bizarrely, my wife has never seen Cyborg 1. *I think that I had it on VHS long ago.
BHC 1 and 2 is in my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I wish it was in theaters like Top Gun Maverick. Was nervous Netflix released it since majority of their movies suck. So glad your review is positive.
I'm honestly curious - have you seen BHC 3 and what do you think of it?
@@LordLOC Yes I seen it many times. The first two are edgy and has the Eddie Murphy rated R style. The third seemed more PG 13. Plus only a few characters returning from the previous two movies. I hated it.
Definitely should've been in theatres. Making this a streaming release was baffling.
Im shocked by how positive reviews are. Its not horrible but its not good.
@@dblshotz75Bingo! I enjoyed it soley based on the fact that I thought it was gonna suck😂
Part 3 don't exist to me!!
FACTS!
It does to me😂 I like it even the dumb parts in the plot and writing. Better than much of what we get now!
I enjoyed it! For some reason, I feel like the 80s/90s big stars are actually just as good or better during this phase of their lives.
Eddie did mention how everything needed to be right for another Beverly Hills Cop movie to come out and I'm glad they took their time with it. Anything rushed could've been as bad or worse than the 3rd film
Exactly. Same with the Top Gun sequel.
And I’m a huge Beverly Hills Coo fan.
thanks Dan because i wasnt sure if i wanted to watch this after wasting time with Coming 2 America
It's interesting to me that you say Axel's daughter isn't just a one note character and their relationship isn't just one note because I watched Sean Chandler's review and he was saying that he found her to be very one note and that was probably his biggest criticism of the film. Just a neat little observation.
I don’t know🤔…I can’t sense the same passion from the first 3 films in this one, it seems….sorta disconnected from what we have become used to😐
The helicopter scenes were so well done. I genuinely watched it wondering how the hell they shot it without cgi. Truely great stunt work. Good movie as well
Yeah I wasn’t sure about this but was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. You are right it feels like Axel! It felt thought out and fun
Fun movie... 2nd half was funny
I am so happy to hear this is good. I love the Beverly Hills Cop series. I will be watching!
Excellent review, Dan. Pretty consistent and a very tough nut to crack - could have done with more laughs but probably much better than could reasonably be expected.
I was so Happy watching this movie. Serge being Serge.
I am so excited for this movie
You earned another subscriber my friend.
Just goes to show you how good movies can STILL be. Great movie and it brought me back to my youth. Weird that Eddie Murphy didn't age at all.
Great review!
I agree if would be better with a crowd and in the theater. My wife and i watched it last night. we enjoyed it, but had a hard time staying engaged from our couch.
I liked it hopefully we'll see a physical media release to compete my Beverly hills cop collection
Loved it but... What happened to JGL's character in the end? No resolution?
I said the same thing when it ended!
It was pretty basic and you could tell the bad guy immediately, but hey sometimes a straightforward story is ok
Hell, even the establishing shots and color grading are straight from the 80s
I think everyone knew Keven bacon was the bad guy the moment you saw his name during the credits. I mean he was so obviously the bad guy he was like I don't care if everyone knows lol
Even Axel calls him out as a probably dirty cop immediately after meeting him, based on his expensive shoes.
Yup I mean it was so obvious lol I loved how obvious it was.@@pitui1987
I wish those Beverly Hills Cop toys that Shaq was promoting were real
the movie geve me 10 more years of life!!!! Its a great movie!!! I grow up with those type of action movies! So happy its so old school
Shooter McGavin? I snorted at least 5 times. 11/11.
