- X-Factor #4 is the absolutely loaded second chapter in the 2020 X-Men: X of Swords event, and the story does not disappoint, continuing to raise the stakes set in the Creation kickoff chapter, and simultaneously remains true to the focus and purpose of the X-Factor title in the Dawn of X.

The intro page does a nice job simplifying the purpose of the X of Swords event. It's a tournament between the "evil" Earth (Amenth) and the mutants of Krakoa, winner take Krakoa.
In case there was any doubt about the relevance of particular titles, X-Factor #4 picks up immediately in the aftermath of Creation, with Siryn leading an infected Rictor back to Krakoa, with a very cool visual call for help from the art team.
Each issue is a chapter in this event - X of Swords is not set up to function like most Marvel events, where you can pick and choose your spots. X-Factor is an essential second chapter.

Remember that Summoner also said that Rockslide's true form is energy and his rocky part is just a shell so it may be that his resurrection semi failed because his energy form is still in Otherworld. Get what I'm saying? Maybe when you resurrect someone who's still technically alive, it messes up the resurrection process and sticks these various versions of them in the same vessel.

I just don't think Hickman would have explicitly stated that Rockslide's true form is an energy form unless it was going to have some significance in the story. And no one there seemed to know about this so he is definitely trapped in Otherworld.

@@MetalED No he is not. Then you have to think, Rockslide can't be in 2 places at the same time. So if he is in Otherworld then what is inhabiting his rocks? Oh, and another thing: did they say they euthanized the imposter Rockslide? Like, they killed, um, "it"?
Apocalypse has been nurturing Richter in excalibur as a mentor and in a way like a father, in contrast to his actual children and grandchild who just attempted to kill him
Also, Apocalypse did some very specific modifications to Rictor's body during his rituals, and so maybe resurrection undoes those mods, which is why he didn't want him to die.
Are the other Horseman the second ones, are they too his children?

We didn't see the cerebro sword short circuit, if the cradles are corrupted, maybe the sword is the key to getting the resurrection protocols back in order.

I like how Syrin and Rictor are shown to be close in this first pages, because, duh, they used to be the old X-factor.
The Cerebro sword may play a role in restoring Resurrection or maybe something else. Either way the Cerebro sword will become more important now that the Cerebro helmets are gone.
I bet the failed resurrection of a multiversal Rockslide could introduce us to.....

One thing I really admire about Hickman era X-Men is how they make more or less obscure characters pivotal. Like, the Rockslide issue was very heavily foreshadowed, but who would have guessed this exact result? Why Rockslide of all Mutants?

I don't think there were actually 11 swords listed for the Arakkii.
The listing of Muramasa twice seems to be a way of depicting that the Horseman Pestilence and Polaris were both audibly listing the 20 swords in unison (both speaking at the same exact time).
That's how I understood it too. I guess we'll find out soon with Wolverine next week.
Mora didn't show Charles would happen in her ninth timeline is because she starts the timeline by awakening Apocalypse and killing Charles and Magneto before they careers get started

In the bigger picture, the thing that is so exciting to me about this is how coherent Creation and X-Factor 4 were. Of course, different writers, different artist, but it felt like such as smooth transition between books. Like, the writing team is working well together. Exceeding well even. I’m curious to see how this plays out, but if this team can gel this well now, they’ll be setting themselves up so well for the future. ... which is terribly exciting!!
I believe that moira cradle getting short circuited she is definitely going to blitz xavier and magneto about what happened and make a connection to her 9th life to give some info about akkaro
So she goes off a little like this.
"Charles, Erik. Can I see you in my no-space for a moment?
Now I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed.
Actually no I'm pissed as hell."
This issue was a good continuation of the story. I'm glad we were able to see the story unfold as well as continued Lorna development. Dave and others called it...suspension of resurrection protocols making death in Otherworld something meaningful. Tournament duels have stakes. ✌❤😎

I can see how Brian will be added as he has connections to Otherworld.

Hey All,
Remember the original teaser cover for the new X-men Hickman run? The one with Moira sitting next to Charles on a bench? There are two Storm's and two Wolverines in the cover shot. I wonder if its a hint at the potential outcome of the Otherworld Tournament. Storm and Wolverine are two characters that are in the tournament and possibly this is a hint that they may sacrifice themselves in order to save Krokoa. Considering that ressurection might mean rolling the dice for an amalgam of their characters, they could take the risk to get the new Wolverine and Storm or maybe something else will be given in their place like an alternate version of themselves.
I am just saying potential theory this based off of that minor detail that I never got a clear understanding of in the original cover art for this new series. Why were there two storms and two wolverines? And now there is this specific confrontation that their are representatives for.
Also of note, Cable is not the young cable we know, or the Cable of old who got his arm back. Its the adult cibor arm Cable and we recently got an issue showing an older Cable who is still alive wondering through a strange desolate place. That could actually be the cable that comes forward to fight in the tournament and initiating the Sword station might be the trigger for connecting the two Cables.
Just my thoughts so far on this.
Let’s not forget that the only version of Beast/Hank McCoy in that Mark Brooks poster was Classic Beast instead of Current Beast.

Joshua Kaamiño I liked them too! I liked the New Mutants a lot. Kinda sad that we haven’t seen ANY other mutants from the different squads on Krakoa. Also I really wanna see Windancer and Wallflower again.
I agree. Moire can tell Charles and Magneto about her life with Apocalypse.
It's interesting that in Moira's 9th life they were able to free the original horseman. Obviously something happened to them because we didn't see them in the ending story with Rasputin, Xorn, etc. I wonder if Moira will play a bigger role than what most are expecting in having some inside knowledge about the horseman, and how to free them. I for one would like them to come to Krakoa and get some stories going with them.
Great episode! I just wanted to point out something that I saw someome mentioning: if you compare Polaris' prophecy with Cypher's version, there are some differences in the Magik and Cable parts. I kinda doubt that was a mistake on the part of the writers. I'm more inclined to believe that either the psychics weren't able to retrieve it perfectly or something else is making their job difficult.

Quick possible correction: I think in Moria's 9th life it was stated that She and Apocalypse went outer space to rescue the original horseman.
Speaking of Moria's lives: could it possibly be that those lives could be accessed via Otherworld??? Hmmmm...
And You made me think about something with the malfunctioning Cerebros. Do You think the Cerebro Sword could have had a reaction while in the hands of Xeno??

The Five didn’t need to sabotage the eggs they already had. Professor X points that out. Essentially, having never experienced the type of blunder that they did before, they panicked and axed everything.
Since the X-men's memories are backed up in sort some of "file storage," they should just make "system restore points" like how computers work. Before they enter otherworld, they will log a "save state" of the x man entering, that way if they do perish in otherworld, they could just be resurrected from a previous point pre-otherworld.
Great analysis as usual! Love your theories about the corruption of the Cerebro units! My theory is The cerebro units were searching for a version of Rockslide, but thanks to Otherworld's strange magics and natural laws, suddenly found an infinite number of versions as it extended into Otherworld, so it extrapolated the data into an amalgamated version to transmit back to the Shiar crystals. Shouldn't Professor X technically be able to roll back versions though?
That’s exactly what I’m thinking too. Why not just resurrect rockslide with an essence that was “backed up” before he went to otherworld?If the backups of mutant minds are stores in Cerebro, not on otherworld, how would the iteration of rockslide that died in otherworld corrupt his backup?
@@EtcEtcEtcFilms I missed a page where Hope said that the older versions were overridden by the Otherworld data...still kind of bogus on the writer's part. It's contrived at best!
I think Santo is still alive. His body is energy under the stone and Summoner knew that.
People have been saying that in this issue Apocalypse died from his wound and the plague. But that's not the case because we know he's going to be central to the rest of the story.
I'm excited how S.W.O.R.D and the Phoenix will be involved in this.
Just checked out the new trailer for X of Swords: Stasis #1 on Marvel’s UA-cam channel, which focuses on the powers that these Arakkii Swordbearers inherit, including 3/4 of Apocalypse’s children. Pestilence ends up going solo like Hawkeye, but that’s only the teasers that aren’t showing what she’s truly involved in.

I would like to see Rogue's Excalibur experience addressed, perhaps by your guest, specifically why Rogue wasn't changed more permanently from the Otherworld energies followed by absorbing all of Apocalyse's energy, which previously has led Rogue to permanently or at least semi-permanently keeping the other's abilities and memories.
A separate question is why are the alternate versions of Excalibur who each became a Captian Britain, created by Jamie, are frozen in crystal at the Starlight Citadel apparently by Saturnyne?
If Dave gets Jonathan Hickman to guest on Krakin Krakoa #100...
He should do it live and allow questions from the audience.

One thing i kept wondering: couple of issues back, in Empyre, the X-men were testing mutant power combinations, specifically Magneto using the minerals in the magma, and they made short work of the enemies there. So, with this in mind, and with the presence of multiple Omega level mutants in Krakoa, im sure (not 100% though) that they could retreat from Otherworld and just obliterate everything on the earth side, plus side is that resurrection would be intact.
Edit: Another thing i forgot to mention was that "bonding" between the Five was just Xaviers doing, not some "friendship related" thing, and i think this takes us back to who to really trust in this island, with Professor X probably altering mutants memories and people starting to notice somethings amiss

I read the book as unfolding information as far as the data pages throughout. The Jamie Braddox in UXF death makes the Otherworld hypothesis weird, but maybe it also has to do with the fact that Santo was a magical sacrifice by Saturnyne almost..
I like how this felt like X of Swords: Creation Part 2. It carries the action directly over from that issue, sets up all of the necessary stakes and plot for the entire event going forward and sets all of the characters on their quests for the individual swords. It could’ve been very cut and dry with just the story but it had really nice character moments too.
Looking at the future issues I can only assume this next couple of weeks will be each character finding their sword and Stasis #1 will kickstart the actual tournament
Huge comics crossover events leave me extremely jaded with a lot of the cheap tricks they use but if this issue is any indication of the attention to character and quality we’ll be getting I’m so excited for this
I think moira didn't show/tell Charles everything because of fear his mind would fracture but she is definitely hiding something.
Idk if this has been mentioned elsewhere but I've noticed a trend of these red gems being included on a ton of character outfits. Notably, saturnyne, several horseman of arakko, selene, Madeline Pryor, and more. In excalibur, there's a whole thing about external energy being contained in a gem. Wondering if there isn't a whole lot more to this.
It would be interesting if Apocalypse dies in Otherworld and comes back with his knowledge of Mother Akkaba Moira. Could throw a wrench in Charlie and Mags secret agenda.
I hope Rachel wields the Blade of the Phoenix as I see her wielding it in previews of X of Swords.
Empyre was what it was but this is how you write a story. Kudos to Hickman for figuring out in his to damage an immortal people. It seems Hickman can also use this otherworld death idea to reboot characteristics or maybe even powersets of mutants. Which should be interesting. A small theory I have is that storm although recently dodged death will die in this tournament probably. She was as we've heard have an important part in a upcoming story so maybe this will play into it. Also glad we got to see Moira
Loving this series thus far, think this is a very underrated issue.
6:00 Classic Obligatory Professor X's Wimpy Screaming
I don't think it is Brian, I think it is Betsy and Kwanon. "Womb" can be a metaphor. They swapped and shared body, mind, soul, powers, existence and they are always shadows of one another. Also, they are both swordswomen. A knight from the west, a Ninja/Samurai from the east. "An echo" is how Kwanon felt about herself in the pages of Fallen Angels. I dunno, I think it may be less obvious this one.
So I sat on this issue for a good minute. Like a lot of people, I kinda feel like we are going to find out later that Rockslide coming back altered is because of something that Summoner did to him. I only say that because even with all of the explanation that they gave us to what actually happened to him, I wonder HOW they came to that conclusion. It just feels like an elaborate hypothesis based on what they saw and not what they didn't see (Summoner and his previous interactions with Rockslide) BUT since this is their answer I am sticking with it until otherwise stated, and that leads me to a thought I have that may be of interest to some of you all. This is the first time the X-men have addressed the multiverse since Dawn of X started (not including Moira's timelines). What if this revelation about dying in otherworld sparks the X-men into exploring it? We have seen that many of the books spawning in the Dawn of X reflect certain aspects of necessity concerning Krakoa ( X-Force dealing with mutant security, Excalibur with magical aspects of mutants, Marauders with business trading aspects and ferrying mutants to safety, Hellions with dealing with problematic mutants and mental health, etc) we know after this the SWORD book will deal with mutants in space, but what about the multiverse? So I had been thinking for a long time that we could see the Exiles book brought back for this very reason. Maybe Xavier or Magneto decide its worth looking into where mutants go when they die in otherworld and bringing them back. They may even decide they want to explicitly explore Moira's past lifelines to see how they can keep Krakoa going and prevent the mistakes they made before. I always imagined this team would be made up of X-men that specifically deal with time travel and universe hoping ( Bishop, Old Cable, Rachel Summers, Blink as leader, and maybe Trevor Fitzroy to add spice to the team?)
Now that Moria was teased for a split second, what are your thoughts on 1:where is she? and 2:what she is doing? Looks like she’s under water similar looking to where Xavier and Forge first spoke about mutant back ups. Unless I forgot and it was established where she was, I had a theory that maybe she was staying amongst Namor’s kingdom, regardless any new thoughts or ideas about Moria?
I think Hickman purposefully wrote himself into a corner with the resurrection process. Because based on the comics science, the x-men that died in House of X #4 actually died. The X-men that came out the eggs are the same DNA along with the most recent memory back up. So, they are new versions of themselves and will have new experiences but they are different entities than the ones who died. And this becomes more evident after reading this issue. What if two jean greys are produced at the same time? Who is the "real" one? And that is one of the things that Moira's 11th life "reset button" will fix. It reminds me of the classic argument of Phoenix/Jean Grey and who was real. They were both real because Phoenix created a new body and took part of Jean's soul and then bonded with it. That part then went to Madelyne Pryor and then back to the "original" Jean body, But there is a lot of grey area(no pun indented) with the resurrections protocols and I think Hickman knows this.
they ACTUALLY died, and they ACTUALLY came back, this is the funny thing about this whole new concept Hickman brought to the table- they are never mere clones, like Sinister's copies of his marauders
Thought this was a great follow-up to Creation. Looking forward to the next 3 chapters next week. When's the special guest announcement for KK100?
I wonder how many of these chants from Polaris are not just referring to the sword bearers identities and swords, but to their futures as well? Polaris is the "Prophet" after all. Doug/Warlock's seems to indicate more than just an identification of them but perhaps what they could be up to in the future. Also, WHY THE HECK do we still not have an explanation as to why Doug has been so secretive about Warlock, but now it appears to just be common knowledge? His "slip-up" with Cyclops in X-Men seemed to mean much more, but now it's just done? Was hoping for more for this storyline, but I imagine there is probably more to come. . .
The Phoenix and Scarlet Witch are other alternatives for the Resurrection Protocols.
I'm sure someone has all ready caught this but...5 Fair and 5 Foul Courts/Kingdoms = 10 staging areas for our 10 duels? ✌❤😎
@ComicBookHerald I think the big cypher story that tini Howard and Gerry duggan hinted at a few weeks ago could be that maybe warlock dies and so Doug is left with no sword so he goes back to the council chambers and tells krakoa and krakoa bonds with Doug like how we see him in PoX in moira's 9th life. Could krakoa want revenge for arrakos betrayal?
And also 2 of the swords on the krakoan side are associated with gorgon (grass cutter and godkiller) so could they be bringing magneto or xavier in with the cerebro sword after they retrieve it from mikhail

If this event was only 2 issues - specifically these two issues - I'd say it was near perfect. As you can probably guess, I'm loving the X of Swords.

And could you do a topic about cyclops losing faith in the council and, by extension Charles and Magneto?
I can't help but feel it will happen. In the first issue of X-men, where Polaris asked if she believed in the words of Charles and Magneto; they focused on his saying yes, like as if there will be a future panel of him renouncing them. Then the council decided not to tell him about Alex's mishap that landed him in the Hellions, and post Hellions where Alex asked his brother what did he want, that panel of Scott just looked like the first crack in a dam that would burst!
If you don't mind me adding, there was also that Hellions data page where they compared Psylock to Cyclops mentioning how he's more trusted to lead the X-men than Xavier. Could be a foreshadow for things to come

I think what the protocols say about superseding their mandates should FORCE become necessary, is not exactly what you assumed it to mean. The protocols state the proper amount of time that is needed for the whole process to be completed. I don't think there's any way of that process being accelerated right now unless one or more of the 5 get their powers increased in some fashion, such as MGH(mutant growth hormone), or maybe from a character like Fabian Cortez, even possibly a psychic fiddling around with their brain bits and fixing something that was broke, or a real reality warper sticks his finger in the pot and stirs it around a little bit.
But my point is(sorry for that tangent), that the protocols were talking about FORCE becoming necessary, which is what I can only assume refers to X-Force, and their clandestined and black-ops type, top secret, highly dangerous, and classified missions. And seruptitiously pointing out that people(mutants) are going to fuckin' die trying to pull off some of the more zany missions that only the likes of an X-Man would ever get themselves into; more often than not, bringing their teammates/family/friends into the entanglement with them too. So they are likely going to need some "Instant Rez", so they can get back out there onto the secret front lines and keep defending yours and mine's blissful-ignorance of the monsters they keep us safe from.
But you see what I mean though, right? We'd resurrect navy seals and spys and John Lennon if we could. And they'd all jump the line and no one would, or could, say shit(Lmao, sorry).
I'm saying it. Charles should have brought back Destiny. But he made a stupid excuse.
Moira has been extremely scared of Destiny since the precog ordered Pyro to burn her alive in her third life and made it clear to her that she could stalk her anywhere and anytime
As long as Moira is afraid of / hates Destiny, Destiny will not be allowed to return (but we know Mystique is going to get involved)
And Charles and Erik follow Moira's directions
Great video man!! Also I wanted to ask, in your previous videos you mention that the X-men might not be coming back completely themselves when they resurrect. Do you think that could have anything to do with what Lady Death said in the recent Scarlet Spider run to Ben Reilly? She said that every time someone dies and comes back their soul becomes more corrupted. In this case Ben had died almost 30 times and was essentially a bad guy at that point. Just wondering your thoughts.
My original theory is that Summoner somehow corrupted Rockslide's memory but what you say about an alternative Rockslide or more inside him is interesting. Also I think Moira and by extention Charles and Erik new this was going to happen but they let it happen so they maybe could get the original Horsemen in their side. If that's true it will be a really dark turn out.
They can't kill of mutants now, they just established an island and we're getting more of them, marvel please don't kill them off again

The "out of one comes many" made me think of multiple man, but he doesn't seem to be involved in this story.
Apocalypse x Rictor is so unexpected and so different, but it works so much and I really like it. I wouldn't have any issue with them being romantically together.

I think they have misinterpreted at least a couple of the prophesies. I don't have any better ideas than the ones put forth in the issue but it's way too early in the story for them to have solved those riddles.
I hope when Storm gets her sword she visits Wakanda
That's my guess, on the cover for next Marauders shows Storm and image of Black Panther and what looks like a warrior from Wakanda.

I have not seen the connection between -A- and Rictor as romantic, instead I see -A- sees Rictor as a surrogate son. Which would explain his actions here as he was just betrayed by his first known children, and he reaches out to the adopted son that's acted more loyal
There are a few things that bothered me in this issue:
1. Cerebro's vvarious backup was also zapped when Xavier encountered a disruption. (Yay for a Moira sighting!) It doesn't make any sense. Why have several backups when they can be easily attacked if the main cerebro is attacked? The bacupp point is now moot.
2. The Resurrection issue in OtherWorld - based on HOX #5, Xavier creates the latest 'save state' of the person. I would assume Rockslides' latest backup was done before they went to Otherworld. So when they explained that dying in Otherworld disrupts the resurrection process MAKES NO SENSE! WTF. Unless Rockslide is so very unfortunate that the backup was done when he was in Otherworld thus when Cerebro retrieves Rockslide's copy, the issue explained in this issue is valid.
Damnit, Hickman and White should be careful with this type of storyline beats. What's the point of having an elaborate resurrection details in HOXPOX when they can just easily insert whatever they want anytime.

The selection of the 10 Krakoan swordbearers should not have been just a white page. I wouldn't mind reading an issue with them just selecting the participants.
I mean it pretty much explains that being there and dying causes the disruption so why would it not make sense?
@@kingslim2870 Because as stated in HOX #5 the Cerebro backup are being done weekly, not every second. So when Xavier, picks up the latest backup of Rockslide, that would be before he went to Otherworld. Any essence of Rockslide picked up in Otherworld contradicts the data pages from HOX #5.
raistlin majere Otherworld isn’t Earth the fact that they go there and die nullified the Cerebro units. It’s shown in the comic and explained by the 5. Yes, you’re correct if they have died in a different plane or place but for the fact that they died in the nexus of the multiverse it erased past data.
Example:
Professor X backs up Jean Grey before going to Otherworld. If Jean dies there it will fry all previous data collected. Just like it did Rockslide. Hence the reason why who they brought back was an essence of him.

I never believed for a second that any of the mutants , where ever truelly resurrected. I believe all the characters are copies.
I don't think it's such a good idea for the first thing to do in the first beg story since HoX/PoX is to go back on the resurrection protocols. I hope in future stories they don't fall back on having to find some loop hole

4) just curious. when i look at the amount of work you do for your videos + your site with reading orders. It seems like a tremendous amount of research. do you do it on your own or you have others helping you? either way. amazing work.
5) im getting AVX vibes. When i first read AVX. i was not that into it. i felt it was basically a modern day secret wars of lets have all these heroes matchup to sell toys type of ploy. But over time. with the amount of impact and storylines that developped from AVX still having repercussions to this day. You have to eventually admit that it was a great story for what it birthed. I feel this tournament style of x of swords will also have this similar result. And like HOX / POX / DOX before it. What i am really starting to appreciate a ton is the new connections that are being created. Again story seeds. I feel like Hickman is a gardener and this is his garden.
That's gonna be difficult to bring dead mutants back to life now ...they got immortality only to be swiftly taken away. I wonder if the events of giant size X-Men and children of the vault might conclude in this event...or maybe Krakoa might have to end the whole thing with a giant S.W.O.R.D ??

I’m thinking some heroes will likely permanently die on the Krakoa side. My guesses are Apocalypse and Gorgon and maybe Doug? We know in another timeline he gives his body to Krakoa and previews of New Mutants show Warlock separate and apart from Doug. The Hanging Man card might be Doug. He died a long time ago sacrificing himself to save Wolfsbane, I could see him doing the same for Warlock. (Not thrilled by this theory.)
If Doug dies, whose going to be Krakoa's translator?
"permanently" is an adverb not suitable for the X-Men, never.
Nobody even asked for Doug's comeback the first time around, and they somehow managed to bring him back... so don't worry, even if he dies again, he'll come back sooner or later

@@Comicbookherald I hope that the theory that Brian is now a mutant is true, and I could see as an explanation that the rest of the mutants characters haven't realized yet. I mean if suddenly Brian started to read minds, creat energy blasts or do other things he didn't do before I wouldn't be surprised at all.
