  • This week we start on the Big Manistee chasing steelhead with some very good fisherman! We also learn a lot about the ongoing negotiations between the sport fishing groups and the Tribes here in Michigan.

Bennett was a piece of work, one time he was fishing a hole at the top of a wide bend. I had fished there many times before, and had seen him rip up river nearer the far inside bank a 1000 times before, so it was my turn to go up river, but Bennett was waving me down, raising a big river owner stink wanting me to go behind him in the 20 ft between him and the bank. He was trying to get me to run over some submerged logs just down river from him as I had to manuver to get behind him, but I knew where they where, so eventually passing close by behind him I told his clients how he normally cuts the river to go up stream when someone else is fishing that hole and about the logs he was feebly attempting to 'guide' me onto. Bennett didn't care he owned the river, I didn't mind as I knew how to pass him there and it would mess up his fishing that hole motoring directly over the prime fish holding spot. The way he went up river was the best way not to spook fish. It was just good fun for him, if you fished one of HIS holes before he did, he held a grudge.

Here's an idea: The Indians agree to give up their 'treaty rights' for hunting and fishing, and abide by all state regulations. In return, the state agrees to only allow Indian casinos. Otherwise, open Michigan to unlimited casinos, similar to South Dakota or Nevada and let the Indians have their treaty fishing but no monopoly on casinos. Which do you think the Indians would prefer?

Most assine coment ive ever hear and racist too boot. Its not indians its native americans. Indians are from india which is on another continent. The name was only applied because of a mistake. Maybe educate your self before trying to coment on what should be done.

@@daniel1697855 Yet, you know exactly who is referenced in the comment. As far as "educate your self (sic)", have you ever heard of proofreading? Proofreading addresses issues such as spelling, grammar, and usage. It assumes you are educated in those areas and that your errors in writing are the result of carelessness not ignorance.

Are you going to interview the Native American fishermen viewpoint. What would they like to see happen. What are they willing to do to sustain the fishery.

The brown trout Steelhead trout and salmon wer never there until the state continued to plant them and the lake trout wouldn't be in good shape ether..... if the tribe's want to gill net then they should have to get a license from the state like every other commercial fisherman and being native should have nothing to do with it... or the tribe's need to actually start taking care of the the fishies and try to improve things.... one of the two..

Interesting point of view - if in fact it wasn't completely factually inaccurate. Each of the 5 fishing Tribes (sovereign nations) spend a much much much larger proportion of their governmental budget (than either the state of fed) on natural resources (stocking, stock assessment, monitoring, invasive species).

And out come all the racist people with the stop the tribal fishing crap. Never mind the fact that the lands and waters were stolen from the native americans and thats why the fishing and hunting rights were granted to them in the first place. One person here says if they dont like it being shut down they can leave the US if you dont love the US get out well sorry but they were here first so your the tresspasser not them get use to that.
