That's enough for today Ellen! Time to do homework! So wonderful to see a child learning from her Father, instead of the Father shoving a cell phone or tablet or game in her hand when he does not want to be bothered. So nice to see this!!
Because of her father having patience and showing her the way, she's instilled with the confidence to say let's try again and not wanting to give up. RESPECT!!!!!!
Hovak, I sincerely admire your patience and determination to help Ellen expand her understanding of developing a groove. She constantly looks back to you for your reaction to her playing. Having raised three kids myself, I appreciate the time you spent developing this lesson and presenting it to her. You recognized when she was reaching a stopping point although she wanted to continue. Awesome job.
This is not only a father teaching his daughter bass. This is an amazing beautiful relationship between the two. Something you don’t see often when it comes to learning music. Amazing pair ❤
@@francktima3473 Oh yes, I can see that too. And her shock when her father suddenly ended the lesson. There is also an impatience in the father, I feel.
@@Binehier Your sensitivity is remarkable. But we should not forget that keeping everything unpleasant and minor disappointments away from children is nonsensical. It does not correspond to reality. If you approach the child gently, with charm and understanding, as Hovak does here, things can't go any better. He recognizes that his daughter, whom he knows better than we do here, is overwhelmed for the moment and sets limits. That is right and good. He explains it to her and does it with charm and kindness. If more parents would do that, our world would be a better place. And, who knows children, knows that it is not a catastrophe for them. 5 minutes later they are already busy with their own affairs. All the best to you.
@@Binehierno impatience at all. He’s a great teacher and he knows when his daughters plays is full for a lesson session. Which was about 30 minutes. I’m impressed
Ellen is at that stage where she is trying to play by ear AND trying to read the sheet music but keep her rhythm going. It's so much going on in the mind and the rhythm and a lot of people just don't understand how hard it really is. Ellen has it in her and she'll learn how to put it all together. It just takes time, patients and persistence and of course DAD being a AWESOME Dad and taking the time and patience to work with her. Keep up the good work 👍🎸🕺
I really appreciate your connection with your daughter. You are such a fantastic instructor and father. Your daughter is a very good bassist too, she seems to really enjoy learning and playing bass. The bond between you and your daughter is priceless. Thanks for your lesson as well, it’s very beneficial to me.
What I like A LOT in this video that it is so authentic. Ellen (who has already a reputation built with amazing and great bass videos) shows to the world that music is a learned behaviour, and the learning goes along with mistakes. Those mistakes are usually hidden for the audience, which makes music for many people like magic. I love this. I have to show this to my pupils as well: look it is 100% normal to make mistakes, even when you are as cool and great as Ellen on her bass. Simple as that. I want to make a deep bow for both Dad and Daughter. Very cool process here. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Absolutely agree with you. I’m going to pick my Bass and play along. Mistakes always exacerbate my frustration. I’m 75 years old. I feel the wonderful energy of these two.
What you and your daughter have is so incredibly special. Soooooooo difficult to be the teacher for your child. Doing a great job, dad, and you've got as good a student as you could ever want to have.
Haven't finished watching the video yet, but just wanted to commiserate with Hovak. "Why is it difficult?" "I just told you." It was difficult because she was watching Dad play some killer fills instead of focusing on the bass! Oh boy have I been there!!! Sir, you have the patience of Job to teach your daughter while maintaining your composure and your incredibly positive relationship with her. I am in awe of you two, and it's truly life affirming to watch you both work together. Ellen, you are fantastic. You're more in the pocket learning a song than most bass players could ever aspire to. Keep up the fantastic work!
Great Dad as musician and patient awesome teacher but most of all a beautifull moment of love between father and daughter. Keep going Ellen .. you will be a great Bass player
I am an educator and a father. I m analyzing every detail in this lesson which requires so much concentration and discipline, yet the teacher gives some flexibility that will open up creativity later. The perfect balance between rigorous work and preserving the joy and passion. Thank you both for sharing the special moment. I truly understand why Ellen is home schooled.
I love the way he, after a mistake or when he steps up the exercises, instead of overexplaining gives her the time to recall what she already knows. I try to use that approach with my students, be patient and let them figure out, and once they realize where they failed, it's very unlikely they make the same mistake. As I sometimes tell them: I'm not here to teach you, I'm here to help you learn. And Hovac does that in a wonderful way.
This young lady learns with a lot of happiness, enjoying the learning process with her own father ... and in a nice environment ... the father has patience with her daughter too ... enjoy this time!!!
Great Dad's rarely get thanked enough so here's a big thanks from me!! Good to see someone taking time to teach their kids fun, constructive and valuable things as opposed to letting them veg out in front of a TV set or video game/computer. Ellen you'll go far with your drive and your Dads love and skills!!
This is the measure of a man. All the other stuff, work, physical strength, courage, intelligence, they all matter...but this is what makes a male a man, the love you have for your child. The time you set aside to prepare them for tomorrow. The patience to help them grow and flourish. This warmed my heart...
Every time dad pushes the exercises one step harder, I am like "Ellen can't surely handle that". Yet, every time she nails it. She is so impressive with her skills.
She exatly understands what she's doing, she "feels" the tones she is playing and she has a perfect instinct for rythm ... She makes my day ! Every day !
This exercise is training her to be a working musician, thinking on her feet and turning a few chords into a performance. Great to see in someone so young.
Watching this little peanut smiling and playing so well is probably the best thing I've seen all year. It really makes me want to find the joy in my playing again.
Being a Steve Vai fan,I just watched the video "I met STEVE VAI" and never heard of Ellen before. So, I clicked on this video to watch her play and I am so impressed. Her 'improvisations' on the 1 and 5 counts (starting 13:45), then later the 1-5-8, etc. just blows me away. You can see the concentration and the enjoyment in her face as she's learning and playing. I will most definitely watch more... Every once in a while, when I hear a young child play an instrument or sing on levels that go beyond comprehension, It makes me tear up sometimes. I have to give praise to the parents here too. It takes a lot of time and patience to learn an instrument, let alone teach it. It's the overall love and enjoyment that makes it easy. May God keep blessing you. Rock On, Ellen!!!!
OMGOSH!! I'm almost in tears at the sheer joy this sweet lady shows us every time we get to hear her play. And Dad, you sure can bring on the funk! You two should both be proud of your first original. It is so fantastic to see daughter and dad have so much fun together! I went to send my grandkids some of your video links. I think the best thing about your videos is to see what a great dad you are and how much your sweet girl adores you. These memories will last a lifetime! Gotta love that fun Ellen is showing us at the end and the sense of accomplishment! Bravo and Brava!
I found it fascinating to see how Ellen processes your direction. She has a solid foundation in intervals, which made this exercise possible. She is picking this up very quickly, and she is still enjoying the challenge, which is beautiful to see.
You guys always make my day. These are such precious moments. Ellen's concentration and timing are excellent at this stage. Kudos to you Dad. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏾🌞
I am a Brazilian engineering (38 years old) and I am learning a lot with you. Thanks to share this practice and success to both. Please, keep posting this kind of video!
The world's most adorable bassist. I quit. I will keep producing and mixing. I can't compete with this kind of talent. I love to see little ones playing music. My oldest began playing guitar at 7. Today she plays guitar and piano. She also plays paying gigs. Never give up on your dreams. There are no limits.
She is a doll, and its awesome to see her learning and the patience of her Dad to encourage her!! Amazing!! She is heading toward being a great musician!!
Hovac you are an awesome dad and top notch instructor. I like how there's discipline and structure to your teaching, and you keep it fun and interesting. Ellen, you are a gem, and an excellent student, who can learn and play anything you hear. A true natural. You're both lucky to have each other, both musically and emotionally.
What an absolute little gem - her powers of concentration are amazing and her pure joy in learning is beautiful to watch. And what a wonderful and patient Dad - as well as talented. Mum must be so proud of them both. I’m so glad I stumbled on this channel - whilst watching the January 6 hearing - a most refreshing change.
I am a musician and so is my daughter. What you and Ellen do would have been a dream for me. I love watch you guys. Ellen is so cute and such a little pro....and you work so well with her. I have a feeling she is going to have a great future
Ellen you are a fantastic young bass player and with a teacher like your father it sure will come right. He's patient and stays calm, but persistent. And he understands a young child's mind and concentration level. Many teachers (and parents😁) can take an example out of this. He reminds me of the teacher I had when I started on drums at the age of 10 (I'm 57 by now). Because of him, the support of my parents and hard work, I managed to go to the conservatory. Keep on rockin', girl😎👊🎸
Ok, I’m 71, been playing Bass since I was 13. I always learned on the fly in a room full of impatient musicians. I have never given any conscious thought setting up a groove. I’ve always just organically came up with cool stuff. BUT, this video is extremely cool. I’ve always Been able to find a good note for a minor chord but never intellectually knew why. In short, I learned a lot from this. Also, very cool that the dad knew that the girl had the knowledge and resisted grabbing the bass and demonstrating. I just subscribed. It was inspiring that they used a rhythm machine. That alone makes it more enjoyable to practice. 👍
A great example of teaching. Hovak makes sure that Ellen understands and accomplishes each step but still keeps it fun. Ellen knows what it takes to be good,
I am so in love with this little girls talent! i play bass myself and shes running through the scales with ease! I mean' look how tiny her fingers are! As she grows and i will bet by the time this little lady becomes a teenager ahe will be a superstar! Great work dad you must be so proud bless both of you...
I've discovered her only recently, and I'm amazed every time I see her fingers fit all together in the space of one single fret, and still she's capable of playing some crazy riffs 😄
I've been trying to learn bass again for a few months. I taught myself guitar over 50 years ago, had many teachers, and my brother told me some theoretical things that were better than anything any teacher or the university taught me. A lot of different people and techniques were used. I'm a singer, R&B, soul/funk with blues roots, so I knew what I needed. One of my teachers was a famous blues guitarist (also one of my best teachers, but he died right after he offered me free lessons for life). My point is that you are both amazing! How I wish I could have had the influence of the dad growing up. You are an amazing teacher! You can't teach soul, but improv is important to learn first, before reading, IMO. I had a good ear, but when I was finally old enough to take piano lessons, the good, local teacher retired, and the available teacher was terrible. A teacher makes or breaks you! Absolutely! I hope you are creating more and more creators. Your talent is so rare and dynamic! God bless you 🙌. BTW, I'm in awe of Ellen. She is already a teacher for me and professional standard. Such a beautiful, happy, intelligent, and humble too, young lady. You are truly blessed to have her.
Excellent lesson Hovak. You are an excellent teacher and you have such an amazing knowledge of music, plus you have an excellent way of teaching. Ellen, it is always a pleasure to see you and to watch you learn and to listen to your music. It amazes me how much you have learned and your knowledge of music at this young age. You are a joy to watch and your music is a pleasure to listen to. Keep up the good work! I look forward to future videos. And thanks for helping me to learn also!
Wow. Your very fortunate to be able to teach your daughter. What a bond. Raising a family like this the way it should be. Very heart warming. I can't believe those tiny hands have such amazing reach. I can't get rid of this claw in have. But this inspires me to work harder. Thanks so much.
I love watching you learn, Ellen!! ..Sometimes we get confused and frustrated with the learning process ...But, I think you are doing fantastic!! ...And once again ...you have the "Coolest and most patient Dad Ever!!"...He is a "Very good" teacher!!! ...I see lots of "Love and patience" in the studio here!! :D
This is magic. As a parent musician who has brought my kids into music and have enjoyed jamming with them for years, I can say that your combination of discipline and "do what feels right" has helped create a child musician who has both structure and creativity. Kudos!
This was awesome.... she started out just sort of playing and then you could see the look in her face and she was serious. A great exercise. Thank you for sharing. In time it will become second nature.
What a Great way to spend quality time with your family... teaching this young lady something she is going to carry with her the rest of her life. Music is Amazing...
What a beautiful gift to be able to make music with your sweet girl! I had wished the same for myself, but no luck. Keep the music coming! You are amazing, Ellen!
First off! Watching the 2 of you and the interaction positive reinforcement not only as father and daughter! But musician to musician and the intensity of her drive to learn and absorb anything and everything you are giving her, allowing her to do so and the willingness to change direction to give her the advantage of making mistakes and learning from them. Once she's got it then stepping in for her to hear the end results of the lesson and playing along at her speed and upping the game by random note to use when she wants! I'd say by the time she's in high school, come prom time (If the kids have them) She'll be too busy playing with a band for the dance! Hat's off dad, Keep it up young lady!!
Lovely dad to Ellen, it's a God's gift to you dear child, fun learning but very cute to understand the notes step by step. Very much impressed. God bless you both!
I agree with you 100 percent! Ellen is so good at 10 years old that I wish I could buy publicly traded stock in her! At the rate she's progressing, another 10 years of lessons and practice could make her the next Tal Wilkenfeld. 👏👍🤙
This reminds me of my guitar lessons as a young man. Ellen, you have a wonderful talent and (most importantly) an eagerness to learn. That's the gift. To Hovak, you're a kind, but disciplined mentor. I respect that.
👍🙂‼️I love how she casually sneaks in a little of Victor Wooten's "The Lesson". Excellent! 😂 I also love how she explains the repeat sign and then repeats it!! 😂🤣‼️👍
Wow! Ellen, you and your dad are SO much fun to watch! And you are getting so good!!! I am learning the bass and I REALLY enjoy learning by watching your videos (I am old and it takes a lot longer to learn when you are old🥺🙂) What an amazing and great thing to do with your dad too! Todays lessons really helped me a lot learning how to groove by adding 5th’s 8th’s and 7th’s and bringing some on the upbeat. Thanks to your dad for that!!
Nice conformity between Dad and Daughter. Ellen has great talent and perception of rhythm and harmony. I like this teaching method, timing and sound of bass as well as some cool guitar licks, thanks 👌🍀
Encouragement is the key to successful teaching. I found that out the hard way. I should say the prudent use of encouragement and praise. My Dad did not understand this, so did not learn much from him. You have good patience. She loves her Dad and wants to please you. She is a good girl, you are lucky, and you both will share your musical gifts with the world.
Hahahahaha 25:06, this! is what makes her a real musician! She is searching for the right notes, listens, recognizes that it sounds a bit Arabic…and immediately is acting with her head, face and body, like an Arabian dancer!!! Woooow! She surprises me whole the process of this lesson and very well done dad! She is going to really build, think, count and later on feel it and make it her own, the whole time! I love it and it brings me to tears 😭. Also this way of learning gives her, her dad and us the viewers great Joy! I hope you keep doing this for life, and I will follow your journey, the whole way through! Thank you for sharing this to the world! 😘 Ellen your adorable and fantastic! One day I come to your shows, and buy your albums where you collaborate with a lot of world famouse musicians like yourself will be! You are already a star to me! And Dad, it’s is sooo Funky what you did on the guitar, those spicy riff’s!
You are an awesome dad. Spending time and teaching your daughter music. She will always remember these great times with her dad. Valuable musical and life lessons. Being able to share a passion with your child is priceless. She is an amazing player thus far. She definitely has it in her dna. Just the right feel for music and that instrument.
Just picked up bass at 50+…this lesson was great for me too! I’m a classical flutist, so improv and that sort of thing is like a different language to me. I will be returning to this video to get more tips from Ellen and her dad 😊 What a fantastic young musician! We need more Ellen’s and more parents like her dad in the world.
Hey ellen, you did a greaz job. But there is one thing I spotted, which might really help you, when you watch the video again. Watch it, and pay attantion on the movement of your legs. At times, they are moving totally on-point to the beat, thats the part you really march throug it. But sometimes your legs are swinging restlessly, which is totally normal, but steals your focus/concentration. You are awesome and doing great. It's just a small hint to help :) You are a real angel, enlighting my day with your smiles.

Ok, I’m 71, been playing Bass since I was 13. I always learned on the fly in a room full of impatient musicians. I have never given any conscious thought setting up a groove. I’ve always just organically came up with cool stuff. BUT, this video is extremely cool. I’ve always
Been able to find a good note for a minor chord but never intellectually knew why. In short, I learned a lot from this.
Also, very cool that the dad knew that the girl had the knowledge and resisted grabbing the bass and demonstrating.
I just subscribed. It was inspiring that they used a rhythm machine. That alone makes it more enjoyable to practice.
👍
I love those moments when he waits patiently for her to realize that she already knows how to do something. That's teaching at its best.
Thank You for teaching Ellen, you are doing absolutely the best.
We love you Ellen just keep going and learning everything!!
This video is like a love movie, the chemistry is raw, love the fact that mistakes where not cut out of the sequence... the young lady is a genius
Kudos!
YES! She's got the feel factor going. You guys are beautiful together. Nice. Practice can be fun!
I love her determination and Dad's excellent instruction. Kudos to you both!
She is so very lucky to have a Dad to teach her with all the great equipment at the touch of her fingers to practice with
Thank you so much for showing the work that goes into it. She is special, thanks for showing how she got special.
What a beautiful gift to be able to make music with your sweet girl! I had wished the same for myself, but no luck. Keep the music coming! You are amazing, Ellen!
Such love and respect from parent and child, this is how the world should be...
Very Cool... Cool Dad and Adorable, bright and talented Daughter... what a great combination !!!
I’m blown away by Ellen’s willingness to work , learn and stay focused at 9 years old! Great job Ellen!✌️😁
Lovely dad to Ellen, it's a God's gift to you dear child, fun learning but very cute to understand the notes step by step. Very much impressed. God bless you both!
She's already incredible. imagine her in just a few years if she keeps practicing like this
I agree with you 100 percent!
This is a magic moment, so much respect for teaching your daughter these very valuable skills. Fantastic 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Quel plaisir de voir cette entente entre père et fille,père pédagogue ,et cette joie de jouer, bravo!!!!j'adore!!!!
👍🙂‼️I love how she casually sneaks in a little of Victor Wooten's "The Lesson". Excellent! 😂 I also love how she explains the repeat sign and then repeats it!! 😂🤣‼️👍
I play guitar and I will start playing bass guitar along Ellen. All my congrats to Ellen and to his dad too for teaching so well.
Ellen, you have the most amazing Dad in the world, he is SO patient and supportive... always keeping things fun and creative. Well done Dad! ❤
Man, she is going to be soooo good if she sticks with it. Such a great start.
I love the look of confidence on little Ellen's face. She is awesome.
Nice conformity between Dad and Daughter. Ellen has great talent and perception of rhythm and harmony. I like this teaching method, timing and sound of bass as well as some cool guitar licks, thanks 👌🍀
She is very talented and obviously has a good teacher. Every teacher should be patient like him. She will go far.
Love the groove you are playing in this video Ellen. Sounds great. Your dad is a good teacher. I play guitar myself. Keep up the good work Ellen.
Right ! That Arabic moves cracked me up too ! She's so charming !
So cool to see behind the scenes. Also appreciate the awesome production value, lighting and camera work is on point!
You are a very special and good man. God has really blessed you with smart, gifted and beautiful daughter.
Let your fingers fly, Let your fingers roll. Gifted is a gifted soul.
The most quality moments with dad & her daughter to make music the way the love. Even I too as a father do spend my time with my son on a guitar to have a quality time together. And the look at her smile just make my day.
OKAY THIS TOOK ME THREE GOES TO GET THROUGH - MY BRAIN HURTS - I NEED CAKE! Ellen you make my day with your posts. BIG THANK YOU -to you and your dad.
