Actually, these cost-effecient skeletal super structures are among the most advanced lighthouses built in the United States. They were designed to allow hurricane winds to pass through them! Not only were they storm proof, they were (nearly) erosion proof as well, and could be dismantled, moved, and reassembled at a much more reasonable cost than completely rebuilding a new tower.

No problem, I'm a huge lighthouse and Delmarva history buff, and the story of Hog Island and neighboring Broadwater, VA is quite possibly one of the most interesting legends on the peninsula. We build closer and closer to the ocean it seems, yet this quaint community just got up and left, accepting that the ocean didn't want them there. Incredible story how they barged those houses to Willis Warf. Did you know at one point, Hog Island was among the brightest in the world at 7 mill. candlepower?

And PS, next time you guys plan a trip out there, I'd love to go, and would pay to experience Smith Island or any of the other islands like Hog, Parrimore or Cobb Island. I've always wanted to photograph/climb this lighthouse! I myself tend the Fenwick Island Lighthouse, climbing the 112 steps, cleaning the lens, and enjoying a view few get to experience as part of the New Friends of The Fenwick Island Lighthouse.

That being said, Cape Charles' taller sister light, Hog Island, was still dynamited in 1948 because erosion was so bad. Interestingly enough, a bid of $78,200 was accepted to construct exoskeleton towers at both Cape Charles and Hog Island 20 miles to the north, which was fairly reasonable for the time period for two lighthouses.

Interesting anecdote, they say the Fenwick Island Lighthouse is haunted. I myself can't disprove this, as the first year I cleaned the lens, in 2008, the lens turned on at about 11:30am, of course I credited this to the cloudy rainy day and the solar sensor, but alas this has never reoccured on any given cloudy rainy day since. Maybe someone was watching over me, satisfied a new generation still has the appreciation for lighthouses that our ancestors strived so hard to keep burning.

That being said, Cape Charles is listed as 191ft, and Hog Island (though listed as 150ft, this is incorrect considering the two were replicas) was 194ft, Hog Island had this large antenna on it's west side that bumped it a little taller than Cape Charles. If you factor Hell Gate Lighthouse (255ft) then Cape Hatteras (208ft) Hog Island would have been the third tallest lighthouse built in America followed by Cape Charles. Obviously both Hell Gate and Hog Island no longer exist.

@Umpqua1012 That seems crazy. It doesn't look like the sturdiest of towers...and wouldn't it make more sense to stay in a smaller building?
