    I will have to try those techniques at my local pond in Cali. I mostly use the buzz air or rubber legged frog and those work great right now

    I just snapped a med/hvy Pfluger working toolies, I would suggest heavy broomstick unless you're working more open water.

    I recommend a high gear ratio reel so you can pick up slack faster and quickly turn a fish around to pull them out of heavy cover

    How are you casting further down for longer retrieves? Bc I've tried to use frogs but I never seem to get long enough cast doing side arms, if I try to overhead casts it goes maybe 20ft then down towards to water... I don't understand why, I'm using a baitcaster on a 7 ft med/heavy rod with 10lb mono... Info please and tips on what I can do. Please and thanks.

    What is a good gear ratio for crankbaits and what is a good rod that works well for cranks baits but also other baits like jigs, spinnerbaits, chatter baits, etc? @Lucky Tackle Box

    • @redsoxcardcollector1788
      @redsoxcardcollector1788 8 років тому

      5 or 6 is what I run

    • @travismoran693
      @travismoran693 8 років тому

      +Getting it Reel fishin I use Castaways Skeleton V2 Series 6'10" Spinnerbait rod. This will work for spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, but may have a little too much backbone for a crank bait. You can offset this by using mono line and loosening up the drag. The idea is to not let the fish get enough leverage to pull the treble hooks free. As for a gear ratio, I like as low as possible. Your 5 will work best but you can also use the 6. Good luck and thanks for watching!

      +Robert Rodriguez I do not do any guiding but have the names of some incredible guides in Northern California. Paul Baily and Matt Allen can provide some of the most exciting fishing trips but also are some of the best teachers of fishing that I have ever come across.

      +Daniel Mtanous Hahahaha, yes, that is actually my stunt fish! I bring him in a fish bowl like the movie, "What about Bob" and any time I can't catch any fish I throw him on!!
      *Disclaimer* This is only a joke, I do not have a pet bass

    gear ratio doesn't matter? rightttt

    • @travismoran693
      @travismoran693 8 років тому

      +Joshua Henn For topwater it really isn't much of a factor. I tend to use a fast gear ratio so I can quickly retrieve slack line on blow-ups.

    • @joshuahenn6189
      @joshuahenn6189 8 років тому

      +Travis Moran Not true. high year ratio for picking up slack line, and when that fish hits it from behind and runs toward the boat. if you don't have a high speed you can't catch up

    • @travismoran693
      @travismoran693 8 років тому

      I used to think the same thing but have slowly changed my opinion on how important a high speed reel is for topwater. I miss far more fish because I set too fast than having a fish hit the bait on the run at the boat and I am unable to catch up to it. When I get hit on topwater I count 2 seconds before setting the hook so the fish has time to turn away from me.
      In the situation of a fish hitting a frog as it is running straight at the boat you have to realize if that fish is really coming straight at you, you will more than likely pull the hook straight out of the fishes mouth. A good hook-set comes when you are pulling in an opposite direction of the fish.
      If you want me to go into more detail on this I can always do a Periscope where I can show this a little better. This is something I have had many discussions about with a lot of different people. Your experiences may be different but do you have a lot of situations happen when a bass hits your topwater so hard on the run that you can't catch up in time? I would bet that if you are having fish hit that hard it doesn't matter how fast you reel in slack they will more than likely still be on.
      All that being said, I do tend to use a high speed gear ratio for topwater. I flat out have more control over the line. The reason I say it doesn't matter in the video is because I don't want people who are trying to learn how to throw frogs to get caught up in what reel they need. When it comes to topwater, it is definitely the least important detail.

      @joshuahenn6189 8 років тому

      Travis Moran I respectfully disagree, one of the biggest fish I ever missed hit and ran toward me, the whole time I was reeling trying to catch up. I caught up when she was under the boat, but never did get a good hookset. I brought her around and the second time she jumped she tossed my lure. I firmly believe if I had a faster gear ratio than 6:4:1, I would have caught that fish. But regardless, you make good points. But to say it doesn't matter what ratio? I would at least recommend it. That's just my 2 cents.
