Beautiful Jim McNeely’s composition performed under his direction by WDR Big Band! Incredible solos by Paul Heller, Billy Test and Hans Dekker! On a gloomy rainy day here it’s what you could have asked for. On other days as well. Thank you all.
Wait a second - although disguised pretty well throughout and echoing at the end, I’m Old Fashioned was written for the movie You Were Never Lovelier (1942, Fred Astaire, Rita Hayworth) by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Sung years later by Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, played by John Coltrane, Paul Desmond, etc - a genuine American songbook classic. Nice arrangement!
@@dshey6802 Funny, what sounds like "free improv" to someone else's ears, to me is simply all the horn players playing the exact same unison melody - only not exactly in the same rhythm but rather each in their own rubato pace within a loose common tempo :)

Thank you all.
Hi Galina, we have made a mistake. The arrangement is by Jim McNeely, but the composer is of course Jerome Kern.

Oh darn, you're right! We made a careless mistake. We'll correct it quickly, also in the thumbnail!

That "bizarre" ending is rather interesting!
I'd love to know how that ending is written. Brilliant!
Were they doing free improv at the end?
