have not even .... not even once, not have i ever, just once tried the cinematic settings yet. The colors look good dude. Nice video, great video!
Ha ha! You did your own cinematic vlog, just not in the Cinematic Vlog mode...which is probably a net positive!
@@BrianCatalano only the UA-cam gods know ... LOL cheers pal.
Very good showcase video and I actually agree with you on those choices. But I also like the fresh gold by the pool a lot!
Thank you so much... That's a good one, too! It's definitely nice to have the options
thank you for this tutorial.. really helps me to understand my zve1 more
You're so welcome... Glad this helped!!
I liked S-Cinetone Gold and might try Chic Gold (if I'm feeling adventurous). My least favorite was Fresh, probably because it reminds me of a GoPro default color profile. Thanks for walking us through all the different options.
I completely agree...and great comparison, the Fresh does have that GoPro color vibe. And also, S-Cinetone Gold is great because S-Cinetone for me is fantastic but too green, so the gold corrects that nicely. I wish we could get these color profiles outside of the cinematic vlog mode, but happy we got them at all!
Yes, do try that Chic Gold. I'd be curious to hear what you think...
dying to pick up one of these as a second shooter to my fx3.
I don't think you'll regret it... I keep my FX3 rigged up, and my zve1 as my pick up/travel cam... If it's in your budget, it's a great b (or A) cam!
Very good demonstration of the Cinematic Vlog feature. I know a lot of people have referred to this mode as "gimmicky". But, I think it can be used quite creatively. The fact that it bakes in the aspect ratio bars saves time in post if you want that cinemascope look. I liked the Chic Gold look, too. I think it could work well on narrative films.
I couldn't agree more! I'm noticing a lot of people are hating on this camera (who don't have it), and particularly hating on this feature, but gimmick or not, I was also pleased with the results... And I may make a whole short with the chic gold as it's a legitimately interesting way to speed up our creativity. Thanks for taking the time to watch it and share your thoughts... Thanks again!!
@@BrianCatalano Yep. I have a handful of creators, like Gerald Undone, who I look to for detailed breakdowns of a camera's features. And I tend to make decisions based on that, because Gerald does it to help not to sell the cameras. Like you said, a lot of the complainers don't even have the camera but probably are getting their queues from creators they like. It's a popular misconception that if someone is highly critical of a product that must mean their unbiased. Which is not a valid belief.
To be honest, I have been looking at the Panasonic S5iix as well. For the same price as the ZV-E1, the S5iix has a lot of features that are most wanted by filmmakers like myself. I currently own the FX30, which is a great camera. So, I'm in no rush. But, I am being pulled in two directions. If I had a lot of "spare change" lying around I'd probably get both. These are good times for creators of all levels and styles. The choices are tough right now.
@@AllThingsFilm1 thank you for that! It's nice to hear another level headed perspective... not always common to read in these comment sections!
A big UA-camr, I won't name names but a friend of Gerald's, basically called me stupid in a response to a comment on in his Lumix S5iix review where he dumped on the zve1... because I said I love the Lumix but chose to go with the ZV-E1, but both cameras are great and my unique needs will not be everybody's...but I was thankful that will all have so many great options.
He clearly didn't watch Gerald's review who is also the only person I rely on for an honest take. I think a lot of people hated how overhyped the camera was by a lot of creators, so now they want to be contrarians as an overcompensation. I can't understand anything more silly as they're just cameras, and we all have different needs.
I have the fx3, and I just fell in love with the sensor, but I never want to bring the camera with me when I travel, so I'm grateful that I can now take this guy with me. I'm actually at the airport now with it in my small sling. I'd never do that with my fx3.
The good thing is that I get to use all my small APSC lenses with it, with dynamic stabilization... So that might make sense to stay with Sony if you also have a collection of lenses for your fx30. Yet, the S5iix is not only a beast, it's beautiful. The form factor is special, plus obviously all the specs. I wish I had open gate on any of my Sonys--among other features in the Lumix. Again, either choice you make is a good one!
Interesting videos Brian and I'm finding them more interesting and informative on the ZV-E1 specifically that a log of what's out there!
I've ordered this camera after much deliberation, I mainly shoot wildlife and nature and also plan on using it just for days out filming family life without faffing too much with grading, so it's cool to see what can be achieved straight from camera. How do you like this camera yourself? I shoot mainly A7IV these days and thought this would be a great addition to take out when only shooting video. I shoot lots in low light and slow motion so I'm looking forward to testing out these features!
Keep up the great work, new sub - greets from Vancouver!
I really appreciate all that... Thank you so much!!
I think you made a good choice, and funny enough, my main two cameras are the zve1 and the A7Cii. I love that sensor in the a74/ A7Cii but I prefer the image quality in the zve1. There's something to it that I can't quite put my finger on, but together, they are a great combo... So I don't think you'll regret that choice!
Looking forward to seeing what you do with it...
Thanks again!!
P.s.
Are you still posting videos?
Thanks for the helpful video. I tried the Cinevlog mode and really like the Clean Auto color profile. The disadvantage of the Cinevlog mode is the automatic aspect ratio and the fixed frame rate (24p). Do you know a color profile that is closest to Clean Auto? Or is it possible to export the Clean Auto color profile as a LUT and then install it as an individual profile on the camera?
That's a great question... And I do imagine you could replicate clean auto as a LUT and load it in. Shouldn't be too difficult with some trial and error, but since I've never tried it (but now I want to), I can't say for sure. That being said, I always use picture profile 11 (S-Cinetone) as my default as it's great as is...or really easy to color grade in post. So I would probably just shoot in s-cinetone and then create a LUT in post to match the clean auto which might be just shifting the color temperature ever so slightly--with some saturation. Hope that helps! Thanks for that question... really got me thinking!!
@@BrianCatalano Thanks for the reply. I also use S-Cinetone, but the advantage of CineVlog is that you don't have to do color grading in post anymore. Maybe it's also possible to adjust S-Cinetone (PP-11) in the camera so that it looks like Clean Auto in the end.
@@Spidertrax007 I get all that... And that's a good point, you can adjust each picture profile setting to create your own and might be able to get it to a clean auto look and then not have to color grade. This is how you can customize it: ua-cam.com/video/2f4Cp4dMWuo/v-deo.html
Hey Brian nice video. Can tell me how many luts we can save in camera slots wise if we import luts in it?
Thank you so much, and you can load in 16 luts!
Clean auto & clean gold bro
Yeah, those are great... Some interesting colors all around making me not have to color grade stuff in a pinch is nice
Hey Brian. Shooting a travel Vlog this weekend with the ZV-E1. Right now I have it in Flexible ISO with 709 800%. Should I only use the flexible iso option in lowlight? Or can I leave it on all the time
Great question, and to be honest, if I were you, I'd probably keep it in S-Cinetone (PP11) as my default for run and gun situations, especially during the day because of the Base ISO of 100... And maybe at night kick it into SLog3 if absolutely necessary. However, S-Cinetone's second base ISO of 2000 is still pretty fantastic, so that's what I'd do. Slog3 is great and if you're really good at color grading and have a good variable ND and keep a close eye on exposure while sticking to the base ISOs, it is the best. That being said, for run and gun travel stuff, s-cinetone is so much easier and a lot cleaner than it gets credited for. As well, it's flat enough that you can grade on top of it. That's what I'd do.... Hope that helps!
@@BrianCatalano thats great information man. I’m still learning my way around color grading, so I think I agree, for run and gun vlogging, I will switch to S-Cinetone. Really appreciate the help!
@@EliMichaelMedia you're so welcome... And I know how sometimes we all overcomplicate things with the 'shoulds' of shooting, but I keep all my Sony's in s-cinetone as the default and very rarely stray because how great and easy to use it is. Best of luck!!
Is there a way to use these color formats but without the aspect ratio (cropping)?
Great question, but sadly, no there isn't a way to use these colors outside of the cinematic vlog mode and without the crop. It's weird that you can't... Wish they would change this in an update
@@BrianCatalano Fair enough! Thanks for the quick response :D great video's
@@BarendvdBrink you're welcome...and really appreciate that!!
I can’t tell if I’m doing something wrong but when I transfer the footage to my iPhone everything looks darker and less saturated
@@cchungy interesting, I guess the first question is, how are you transferring the footage and in what color space or picture profile are you shooting in? My guess is you are compressing it massively to get it on your phone, which will effect the colors. Also, the phone is HDR rec2020 (a different color space) to (likely) you colors that you recorded rec709 which is more standard... There's a lot of variables that can influence this process, which is why I have never even tried it!
@@BrianCatalanoit’s definitely being compressed. I’m just looking for the best setting to be able to post short form straight from my phone after transfer.
@@cchungy I get it... That can be one of the most frustrating issues with using a proper camera over the phone. I honestly don't know of a good solution to that other than transfer/edit in your computer first and then put it in the cloud and download onto your phone to share.
I like clean auto
Yeah, it's so... Clean!
can you get Chic Gold in 16:9?
No, sadly you can't. You can only get these custom colors in the Cinematic Vlog setting. What I may do is just crop in, in post and know in advance that I will be cutting off the sides a bit, if I want to use the chic gold in 16:9
@@BrianCatalano these look so clean and polish native. Really great for busy travellers. Now I wonder whether to get this or the A7R5
@@paulchiu wow, those are two great options and two very different cameras! The RV is better in almost every way except for price, size, lowlight, and file-sizes. Tough choice though...
@@BrianCatalano I ordered the ZV-E1. look forwards to using it! Thanks for your help.
@@paulchiu amazing! Hope you love it as much as I am!!
The auto looks the best, others are too coloured.
That's my usual picture profile because it's the most neutral... I was just surprised that there were some others that I didn't hate!
DO A VID ON FLEXIBLE ISO
That's a great idea... I will as soon as I can!
@@BrianCatalano yes everyone keeps saying it’s the same sensor etc etc but no one actual does a test , so you could be the 1st because that is what a lot of users are looking for..the fx3 an fx6 has the same sensor but they have 2 different looks in slog3
@@TwinCityTV1 yes, I definitely again thinks that's a good idea to compare the fx3 with the ZV-E1 in SLOG3!
You inspired this video directly.... Thank you! Here's your video on Flexible ISO: ua-cam.com/video/_oKWQTYZo4k/v-deo.html
Clean auto looks the closest to real-world colors, but I imagine each color tone has its uses! I'm still jealous you have this camera!! Stop making videos ahowing it off hahahah
Yes, that clean looks pretty natural... I do wish I could use these colors outside of the cinematic vlog setting, but it's definitely a cool feature that you will love--as soon as you trade your zv1 and a7s3 for a mini2 and the ZV-E1 (kidding, not kidding!)
@BrianCatalano loooooool, my camera man told me to trade in the fx30 and A7s3 for the FX30 lol. No one respects the A7s3 these days lol
@@francoismarc3 ha ha... Im obviously playing 'cause you already have like 5 amazing cameras!
@@BrianCatalano Need a drone now! But want the ZV-E1 hahahah
Auto Cinetone 😉
That's my default favorite too, but was surprised that I didn't hate some of the others!!
My new ZV-E1 has the bars virus. You don’t show how to dissble
Ha ha... "Bars virus", that's clever! So when swiping right on the screen the quick menu comes up to control the modes and you should see the cinematic vlog button to turn on and off on the screen. You should be able to just press it off to resume the normal aspect ratio
@@BrianCatalano thx for getting it is a joke. I had no idea how I turned it on.
@@jannarkiewicz633 hahaha!
