The Making Of Prinze George’s “Dividends” | Deciphered

For the second edition of Deciphered, New York-based synth-pop trio Prinze George came to our converted Carriage House studio to collaborate on a new track with world-class engineer and Soundtoys superfriend Ariel Borujow. Lauded for their multilayered synths, hypnotizing vocals, and fusion of analog and digital sounds, the band inspired us to build a unique studio that featured classic instruments and synths from our collection, alongside purpose-built effects stations designed to put control of select vintage gear into the hands of the artists.
With a sketch of a song produced in their home studio in hand, the group explored the sonic possibilities of the gear with our engineers and began to build upon the original vision. Over the course of three rugged Vermont winter days, they discovered new sounds and moods while writing, recording, and fending off the weather with red wine and whiskey. The result was “Dividends,” a gorgeous hybrid of analog and digital sounds that bloomed into a cinematic pop anthem with the help of Ariel’s direction over the session.

The Cue Mix from Pro Tools consisted of Outputs 1-8 routed to a Mackie 1202VLZ4 mixer. This allowed for a monitor mix to be dialed in and shared among all members of the band. From the Mackie, the mix was sent to multiple Presonus HP4 Headphone Amps, which not only provided headphone volume control but also allowed for control of a personal Meyer Sound monitor for each individual. For the most part, however, the Cue Mix was a copy of Pro Tools Outputs 1 & 2.
