Many also view the hardtails to be the most visually stunning of all mountain bikes. just check out Instagram or Pinkbike forums and you'll find a plethora of custom mid and long travel enduro and XC hardtails. If you're a mountain biker on a budget, a hardtail is hard to beat. In this video we explore some for the benefits from my perspective. Hope you enjoy.

    I ride hardtails, always have. I love them and really don't feel I need a full sus. That said I've ridden mates bouncy bikes and they are amazing. Climbing on loose, rough stuff that rear travel just sticks the tyre to the floor and fast off camber roots etc. are a dream.
    Buut, I like the way hardtails make me work at stuff and I definitely like not having to worry about affording a shock rebuild at any time..
    Street cred? Meh. I suppose there is some satisfaction to be had from making it through stuff that others on full sussers have failed on but it's really the very least of my concerns.

    I agree with most of your points except "street cred". I am fairly new to mountain biking but have had an older hardtail sitting in the garage for about 10 years. Blew the dust off it and started riding. Is it the latest and greatest? No. But I will be 57 this year and do not have a need to have the newest. I have updated and fitted it with some newer parts and ride the heck out of it. I am not going to be riding Whistler or doing any massive jumps. No need for street cred here. I ride for fun, enjoyment and exercise and that's enough me.

      Nothing wrong with that in my book! At the end of the day, it's all about the individuals personal motivation, preference and enjoyment. If you're mountain biking at 56, you're way ahead of the game. I might call that street cred 😉

    this is great content that confirms my addiction for hard tails. I owned a full squish a couple of months ago that I never warmed up to it. Sold it and got my nukeproof scout, never looked back ever since. i got my marley frame just now and ready to build my next hardtail! will be transfering the parts from my roscoe 7 to the marley since it offers a much more aggresive geo

    I love this video man, it's so true too. I bought a second hand commencal mini DH bike as a first MTB, and inevitably I hit a jump and the rear shock acted like an ejector seat and I hit a tree and broke my shoulder haha. I had another FS 29er since then it was ok but a bit boring and took the fun out of it. I love hardtails and just bought an on one TikTik steel weapon. I totally agree. I don't do technical trails and rocky terrain, just xc and gravel, smooth dirt and paved roads. When I do come across rocks, roots, varied terrain, I am standing and my legs become the shock obsorbers.

    • @AdrenalineIsLife
      @AdrenalineIsLife  3 роки тому

      You can most definitely adapt to those conditions and it's more satisfying when you smash through a chunky section.

  • @MaplePanda04
    @MaplePanda04 4 роки тому +1

    Steep tech features are way easier and safer on a full squish. Since hardtails can only compress the front (making the bike steeper), slopes greater than around 60 degrees get sketchy when the fork compresses and the bike goes completely vertical. On a full squish, you can shift your weight back to compress only the rear suspension, effectively flattening the slope!

    • @AdrenalineIsLife
      @AdrenalineIsLife  4 роки тому +1

      I can't disagree with you. The hardtail will present a greater challenge when things become more chunky and steep. That definitely doesn't stop people from doing it. There are lots slack long travel hardtails designed with this in mind too.

    awesome video man! i have a hardtail and i like to ride trails a lot, but i also ride regularly with guys in fire roads and run XC marathon and technical races...so i basically need a do it all bike. Guys keep telling me that i should buy a full sus, but i'm doing good with my 29" hardtail actually (i had made some adjustments to make it more trail oriented: shorter stem 40mm, wider rims 29 mm, Barzo XC trail 2.35 front and Barzo XC trail 2.25 back, dropper seat post). Here in Brazil we have to think twice about switching to a full sus, due to the crazy prices (and also the danger of being robbed if pedaling alone). I bought my hardtail for R$11.000,00, and a full suspension here doesn't cots less than R$25.000,00 (think about a bike costing 11.000,00 or 25.000,00 USD in the US)....so it is veeeery expensive. An imported full-suspension here does not cost less than R$40.000,00 (e.g Specialized Epic), so i don't think i'll be switching to a full-suspension if it is absolute necessary. Looking at your video, i don't think it is and my pocket (and wife) will be grateful for that!!

    • @AdrenalineIsLife
      @AdrenalineIsLife  3 роки тому

      The Roscoe is a great bike. The Fuel is also an excellent bike. Very different bikes though. It all depends on your personal preferences and where you do your riding. Some will never ride a hardtail while others will ride nothing else. I love both type of bikes. A hardtail will spice up a ride and you'll learn to pick your lines through a trail. With a full suspension you can smash into most everything with out much consequence. The Roscoe will challenge you especially on rough trails but I bet it'll out climb the Fuel every time.

    I race a 2018 Rockhopper in XC, we've done everything from the Cuyuna Crusher, to the Maah Daah Hey 100. I'm currently building a San Quentin 3, for park. 150mm SR fork, OneUp Components cockpit, and the frame ships to Cali for custom paint, next month. My stoke level is absolutely off the charts. The only conceivable reason I could see needing a full squish, is if you're racing professionally, or you're taking on Megavalanche.

    That street credit is very real. I was riding my local enduro tracks with my dartmoor hornet and i was getting a lot of weird looks. Especially when i finish the trails with a big smile on my face As if a didn't suffer from so much punishment of having no rear suspension. I enjoyed it because i know i made the right decision.

    What’s your thoughts on Steel vs Aluminum hardtails? I’m currently comparing the two .

    • @AdrenalineIsLife
      @AdrenalineIsLife  4 роки тому +1

      A proper fitting bike is more important than the material IMO. All things being equal, steel has better dampening properties and is more durable. The downside is that the frames are heavy. If you ride rough terrain and you aren't looking to win any xc races, steel is a good option. Aluminum is still a good option though. You shouldn't disqualify it. Weight savings and greater stiffness make them more nimble. Also they can usually be had for less money than a comparable steel bike. Hope that helps.

      You get more pop off the lip on a hardtail. So generally it is easier to get air on a hardtail but the landings are harsher. It is harder to get height on a full sus but the landing is cushy. When I see the rear suspension fully compress on a big jump, it makes me nervous because the pedals practically touches the ground. My friend was unlucky and there was a rock there and it ejected him off his bike and it broke his collar bone.

    • @theGiver3
      @theGiver3 4 роки тому +1

      Explore putting a thicker tire on your back tire like a 2.6 or 2.8 if you dont already have those sizes on. It's not much but it does make the landing a bit cushier.

I was torn between the mmmbob and and Marley but ended on the Marley because I don’t have many big descents around here. However coming from a giant fathom Im wondering if the Marley will give me the more aggressive ride that I’m looking for(with the 130mm fork) or if I should put a 140mm fork to squeeze a tad more slack out of the bike. Thoughts on this idea? Thanks in advance. Also what rise are your bars?

    • @AdrenalineIsLife
      @AdrenalineIsLife  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks! Glad you enjoy the channel. 😁 The MMMBOP is a cool bike but it is very slack. Like DH bike slack. The Marley is still a very slack bike with a 65.5 deg headtube. That's deep in enduro bike territory. 140mm will work just fine If you want a little more travel for big hits. IMO you don't need to slacken the bike any more for purposes of descending. Bars are 20mm rise.
