The plane at the beginning is the lone Hawker Siddeley HS 748 Srs.2 flown by Gabon Express as TR-LFW. This plane encountered mechanical problems on June 8, 2004 after departing Libreville Gabon, and was ditched just offshore while returning. 30 people on board, 11 survived, including the crew. This incident marked the end of operations for Gabon Express.
One of the Caravelles crashed on landing somewhere in Africa. Just unfortunate nothing to do with bad maintenance...Bearing in mind these planes are over 50 years old at the time of the documentary, it's well serviced and a great aircraft.
This reminds me of my time as relief manager Gabon for BCal in 1983.LBV was a weekly stop for flights from Lgw to Lun by A310..Air Gabon then operated F28. Libreville was a brilliant place to spend 3 months ..Thanks for bringing back good memories
the story is that it was an DOUGOLAS engineer that got the idea to put the engines on the aft fuselage but EDOUGLAS was afraid of the structural problems it could devellope so the engineerv mowed to RFRANCE and aerospatiale they took up the idea and it seems to be a success by then.----
I noticed on the Caravelle Landing that the blocker doors for engine #2 did not deploy for reverse thrust. Here is the reason for engine #1 not smoking. It was down. The plane was being flown on one engine. Obviously they had suffered an in flight engine failure.
Rolls-Royce Avon power plants alike any Pratt & Whitney JT8D-1 and General Electric CJ-805-23C plants, do smoke when the CANs air flow is not proficient to enhance combustion the list for smoke is quite big, and smoking burners are normal of those designs, it wasn't a concern in those days. Having one power plant for a show flight with no payload is possible, but too risky for them to lose their investment if something goes wrong.
An amazing and special airplane....I remember it from my childhod. when my mother and I went to Lake Garda with the Super Caravele...1970- 1980 STERLING AIRWAYS ...amazing memiries...and that staircase behind the engines...ohhhh ...))))
it just need another fuel control or just adjustments i n military pover setting those pratt & whitney is probably the best jet engine ever built many was running 40000 hrs without major overhaul just on condition with special cheks now and then.----
Wow, this video was quite a difference from the Air Canada B777 video two or three weeks ago!! Interesting to see older aircraft types and their particular operating conditions and procedures.
I respect them for flying these aircraft, to me these old aircraft with dials instead of digital screens look like death traps but the front of that HS748 defiantly reminds me of the nimrod that used to fly over my house out of kinloss till the UK decided to retire them. Still wouldn't feel as safe like that.
The Aviation-Safety.net database says the plane here, registered in the clip as 3D-SEP s/n 251 crashed as 3D-KIK near Goma, Dem rep of Congo, on Aug 28, 2004. Fortunately with no casualties but it was a loss of airframe.
Front gear tires dangerously worn. Wonder how many airframe hours were on this thing when the carrier acquired it. Maintenance standards in Gabon? Precarious scenario for sure! But a beautiful airplane for sure.
Super cool little plane. Graceful, beautiful, and quaint. From the beautiful cockpit windows to the little bell that rings at rotation. Does anyone know what it's really for???
Last time I rode in the back of a DC-9, with the #2 engine screaming over my shoulder, it was plenty noisy back there. If the Avons seemed smoother, it's likely because the JT was generally a larger and more powerful engine.
Black smoke coming from engine #1 LOL. Fucking awesome, these guys in Gabon pretty much still make the old classic liners work to the limit of their lifes.
Good point about the "new challenge". It's fun to know that the real PILOTS flying the planes (instead of computer sim playing modern pilots) are in Africa nowadays :)
HI JSUT PLANES. EXELENTE JOB :) BUT I HAVE TO ASK YOU WHY YOU HAVE NOT MADE A MOVIE OF AVIANCA(COLOMBIA), CAUSE IT WAS THE SECOND AIRLINE FOUNDED IN THE WORLD AFTER KLM. THANKS :)
A SUD Caravelle first on the late part of the video.. The Plane first on video is Convair 440 with turboprops? Like this video, good to see Caravelle on duty!
I have this video, it is super! Gabon Expresss was the world's last Caravelle passenger operator. Are any Caravelles still flying cargo, perhap in South America? I can't remember.
the lift dumping devices vas put in ARMEED position before landing and when the mainwheel spun up an engaged the antiskid system the lift domping devices vas automatic deployed and the reversers could not be deployed in thev air the throttle had to be in idle position first and also the anti skid activated (as far as i remember)
Re; James Stapletons comments - I'll go with that....Like the pilots SOH, and by the way what a place to fly. If only I'd not been such a scaredy cat when I was young.
Very nice video! :) But the JT8D engine # 1 on this 11R caravelle is overdue for it´s repair*s* I would say that bearing station # 5 before the HPT. Very common fault on this engines....
Fairly common with IL62 but dangerous...if you needed to go around with reversers open (clamshell), you could not close them because of the pressure of the air, i.e. going around on two instead of four engines. :o
Man that port turbofan engine has a problem. I sure would not fly that aircraft until that engine is thoroughly checked out. Low budget airline with crappy maintenance I would suspect. I doubt by looking at that airframe if the thing is even airworthy.
@speedbird7471 maybe for 2 reasons 1_because the airplane is so old ,, and in old days they didnt care about saving environments so they didnt put filters in the engines to reduce the burning smoke 2_Because the quality of the kerosene is too bad Good Luck :)
How do I begin to express my love for the beauty of this plane! Future generations will look back marvel!

Libreville was a brilliant place to spend 3 months ..Thanks for bringing back good
memories
I flew a caravelle in 1990, Turkish airlines, from Istanbul to Ankara.
Brings back great memories... They were grand little aero's - I loved the speed brakes and landing in Geneva
This brings back some really vague childhood memories of when the old french airline UTA flew one into Port Vila from Noumea
great these Caravelles, inspired Douglas to make its DC-9s :)

There are no blocker doors on the Caravelle which are visible from outside.
Its possible that the TR for the right engine was deferred.
Watch closely at 5:23, ENG#2 is running, you can see smoke while on reverse thrust.
great video!, Glad to see the caravelle who helped revolutionize jets planes
We flew on the HS-748 with Fiji Airways from Fiji to the Solomon Islands back in 1968...really nice aircraft!!! and airline!!! Laurie
One of the best videos I have watched with JustPlanes, if not the best. Thanks!
Boy...Tell me you would'nt have a headache after a long flight in this beautiful bird. God I love the H/S 748. Thanks for the great video Just Planes!
An amazing and special airplane....I remember it from my childhod. when my mother and I went to Lake Garda with the Super Caravele...1970- 1980
STERLING AIRWAYS ...amazing memiries...and that staircase behind the engines...ohhhh ...))))
that left engine is a smoker....
Is it normal?
needs some overhaul...
Jean Carton The right engine smoke injector is faulty....
it just need another fuel control or just adjustments i n military pover setting those pratt & whitney is probably the best jet engine ever built many was running 40000 hrs without major overhaul just on condition with special cheks now and then.----
Or their flying on one engine. Notice on landing only the left reverse thrust was used
Wow, this video was quite a difference from the Air Canada B777 video two or three weeks ago!!
Interesting to see older aircraft types and their particular operating conditions and procedures.
The first airplane i flew on in 1963. this is a super airplane! thank you for posting this video.
great video ! flying as in the old days, really cool
I respect them for flying these aircraft, to me these old aircraft with dials instead of digital screens look like death traps but the front of that HS748 defiantly reminds me of the nimrod that used to fly over my house out of kinloss till the UK decided to retire them. Still wouldn't feel as safe like that.
Thanks... Not every airline is interested in what we do... We've already filmed 250 so I think we're not doing too badly... :)
Real an true aviation, regards from Brazil some of us living this.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Unfortunately I do not believe this aircraft is still flying...
Great video! Smoky engines on the Caravelle!
Now this what i call extreme old- school thanks for the video
Congratulations to all those people! that make it possible! long life to them, and long live the Caravelle, awesome material
oh my godness, the Sound of the engines is incredible :-)
I live in Colombia and I haven't seen nor heard of a Caravelle since the mid 1990's. I'm afraid they are not flying anymore. :(
OMG, just awesome ! The time is stopped in the 70's. Good job & thank's for this one !
You gonna love those bell chime annunciators of Sud Caravelle and it has black contrails.. LOL
Im getting a big Gaboner from these nice aircraft!

HS748 was the first plane I flew on, great video
I know the earlier models used RR Avons-this looks like one of the later Pratt & Whitney powered models
the pilot look like thy njoy the work...
Front gear tires dangerously worn. Wonder how many airframe hours were on this thing when the carrier acquired it. Maintenance standards in Gabon? Precarious scenario for sure! But a beautiful airplane for sure.
Awww thats very kind of you! Thank you :)
ya you gotta love the old classics with all that black smoke
Love the noise of those RR Darts...
Super cool little plane. Graceful, beautiful, and quaint. From the beautiful cockpit windows to the little bell that rings at rotation.
Does anyone know what it's really for???
Looks like a lot of fun. Love the Caravelle!
Last time I rode in the back of a DC-9, with the #2 engine screaming over my shoulder, it was plenty noisy back there. If the Avons seemed smoother, it's likely because the JT was generally a larger and more powerful engine.
Only one motor smoking ..Not too shabby !!
very precious material, thanks!
Just great stuff Air Gabon rocks Thanks Justplanes.
Responsible 'real' pilots don't fly aircraft around that aren't insured or airworthy, putting both their passengers and people on the ground at risk.
cool! the left engine seems to be smoking more than the right one!?
the right engine was down
Wow....these things are still flying? Check out that reverse thrust at 5:25. These pilots are so chilled.
Amazing footage. Kick the tires and light the fires.
These pilots just look happier than big airline pilots
@Fpulz Third person is the flight engineer. a Common sight in older generation jetliners.
best airlines I've never seen...
HI JSUT PLANES. EXELENTE JOB :) BUT I HAVE TO ASK YOU WHY YOU HAVE NOT MADE A MOVIE OF AVIANCA(COLOMBIA), CAUSE IT WAS THE SECOND AIRLINE FOUNDED IN THE WORLD AFTER KLM. THANKS :)
Very silent Caravelle, indeed! Nice memories though! Tks!
A SUD Caravelle first on the late part of the video.. The Plane first on video is Convair 440 with turboprops? Like this video, good to see Caravelle on duty!
Excellent!! Thanks a lot.
I have this video, it is super! Gabon Expresss was the world's last Caravelle passenger operator. Are any Caravelles still flying cargo, perhap in South America? I can't remember.
this is Classic stuff man....
thank you, very interesting and nice
looks like only 1 engine working. thurst reverser on engine 1 only can be seen @ 5:26
very nice !!
i just hope those werent the pilots in the crash of their HS748 (company went broke after that)
Wow really cool. In the Caravelle did they really go idle, speed brakes, and reversers deploy BEFORE touchdown?
the lift dumping devices vas put in ARMEED position before landing and when the mainwheel spun up an engaged the antiskid system the lift domping devices vas automatic deployed and the reversers could not be deployed in thev air the throttle had to be in idle position first and also the anti skid activated (as far as i remember)
the speed brakes could of course be deployed in the air it was their main job .----
@@TheTagrende hey thanks for the reply!
Great video, funny pilots! , ''welcome to Bitan international airport''.
Re; James Stapletons comments - I'll go with that....Like the pilots SOH, and by the way what a place to fly. If only I'd not been such a scaredy cat when I was young.
Was is that cable hanging on the right side. Is that safe ?? 😜
they probably still have mixture controls on those old engines, lean out the left engine !!! (just jokes)
+triplanelover LMFAO..sure right. looks like only one engine working
Reverse before touchdown!! Nice!
Very nice video!
:)
But the JT8D engine # 1 on this 11R caravelle is overdue for it´s repair*s*
I would say that bearing station # 5 before the HPT.
Very common fault on this engines....
wow
caravelle was a noisy beauty. flowns dozens of times in thhe 60s and 70s.
funny guys, another great vid!!!
les enfants ont enfin vus leurs papa au commande de cet avion.
the draggie was a fantastic aircraft
The EU would never allow that plane to go anywhere near their airspace with their draconian ETS. Good clip.
this plane crashed in 2004, HS 748 crashed too.... Robert Sobek Czech pilot living many years in Africa....
It wwas the HS748 who crashed on june 2004 ;).
2:01 is that a crack in the windscreen ?
he reverse before tuching down, the firt time i see something like this
When was this? I didn't know any Caravelles were still flying.
caravelle is a beautiful aircraft!
Haha I have a Pineapple as handlugage! Awesome!
Fairly common with IL62 but dangerous...if you needed to go around with reversers open (clamshell), you could not close them because of the pressure of the air, i.e. going around on two instead of four engines. :o
That #1 needs a tune-up!
Why is there so much smoke coming out of the engine on the caravelle ?
Man that port turbofan engine has a problem. I sure would not fly that aircraft until that engine is thoroughly checked out. Low budget airline with crappy maintenance I would suspect. I doubt by looking at that airframe if the thing is even airworthy.
It is correct that GABON EXPRESS actually ceased operations in 2004? If so what was the fate of the very rare Caravelle?
That Black Smoke LOL!!!!
I see it now.. Duugh! :)
What window is that? around 2:30, it's forward but it don't look like the front
windscreen?
very beautiful aircraft but, sincerely... no courage to fly in this one... lol
nive vid of classics
Does it have turbojets or turbofans?
This should read P&W JT8D.
This guy is the man with the plane ah?
arrrr
@speedbird7471 maybe for 2 reasons
1_because the airplane is so old ,, and in old days they didnt care about saving environments so they didnt put filters in the engines to reduce the burning smoke
2_Because the quality of the kerosene is too bad
Good Luck :)
Is it me or is the left engine on the Carvelle smoking a bit too much?
Wow i have never seen this aircraft before,, on take of 4+ it doesnt seem to have aenough power to give it proper rate of climb :P
Alto padrão de segurança hein....
sad that gabon express no longer operates caravelles...
What is he doing at 5:00?
Showboating for the camera?
What's the first officer saying at 1:08 ? Which language is that ?
Why is the number 1 engine on smoke
