Here's Why You Shouldn't Go Into Dentistry Just For The Money

  • Recently, I've been seeing dentists condemn the price of dental school and increasing amounts of debt that new dentists are graduating with. On top of that, the dentists are discussing how the field does not provide the financial freedom and dream life that it once did. In this video I discuss my thoughts on why becoming a dentist is not the right decision if your only goal is to get rich and live lavish.
If you're new to the channel, my name is Eli and I am a 3rd year dental student at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. I attended the University of Maryland, College Park for undergrad, and I did a post-bacc program at George Mason and Georgetown Universities, called G Squared.
On my channel I vlog my dental school journey as well as make videos for pre-dental students who want advice on getting into dental school. I didn't have the easiest journey to dental school, and a unique story, as I was interested in medical school for 2 years after graduating before switching to dental. Follow along my journey as a dental student and after I graduate, I want the channel to be a way for young Black men and women to see someone that looks like them working in the healthcare field. Also, share the channel with anyone you think may find it interesting! I appreciate all the support and really want to get my UA-cam out there.

Bro, thank you so much for your input on everything regarding dental school & the reality behind it. It's a huge sacrifice, but your videos excite me and motivate me to pursue dentistry post-undergrad. I’m at community college right now, trying to save as much money as possible and avoid loans until I need them. I know Dental school is pricey, especially since I hope to attend UT Health SA School of Dentistry. At first, I chose to pursue the field because of the money, but once I did my research, I realized my love for the field, teeth, and how great it sounds to one day be able to help people feel comfortable with their smiles.

Sheesh , thank you for being raw and real about your loan debt. I went to community college and had my job pay for school for me for undergrad ( so I don’t have that many loans) . I was going to be a pharmacist for the money because my job will pay for my schooling but that’s not what I want to do . I love the dental field, I’m just scared to make this sacrifice

Of course. Everything on the channel is raw and real! I completely understand why it is a tough sacrifice to make. Aside from the debt of how expensive school is, you have 4 years of not working a job/making money as well.

The fact that I was just calculating how much I’ll have to take out in student loans to pay for dental school if I get in lol. I agree that the opportunity cost is not worth doing it just for money.

schools do offer scholarships and there are ways to get around the debt if you want to do HPSP or NHSC scholarship, but these scholarships are competitive and limiting!

Thank you for your video. well, I was a dental student in another country, and I had very difficult times in dental school. But here as they require me to study again to get DMD as second four years, I was wondering if it worth it or not. Now by seeing this video and also considering my feeling, I know deeply I don't like to pursue dentistry anymore. But social pressure and expectation of others to continue your education.... and also, I don't know what else to do to make money here. it is a very difficult life decision.

I can only imagine how difficult it has been for you to make a decision. I hope whatever you decide to do, it brings your mind some peace. Thank you for commenting!

Damn I feel you, exactly the same situation for me here in Germany - kinda got an interest for dentistry and I think it’s a cool career but I honestly don’t find teeth that exciting and deep down I think it’s just a means to make money and do some good in the world. But certainly not my childhood dream. Idk switching is a tough decision…I think in the end most of it is going on in the head and the fear of failure but I guess one just has to go through it to find out it’s probably not that bad after all. But that’s just my guess, since I didn’t drop out yet, cuz I don’t know what else to do.
Wish you best of luck and in the end it’ll probably be all fine if you focus on the things that make you happy, also outside of the job.

I was shocked to find so many pple interested in dentistry just for “the money”, I already knew coming in Id never be a millionaire lol

You can definitely be a millionaire, but it most likely won't be from just dentistry. I think what attracted me to the field money-wise was knowing that I'd have work/life balance that would allow me to put extra time into my passions and side hustles that would increase my income

@@StudentDoctorEli I just wanted a good 9-4 job thats pretty active (not sitting down at a desk all day), hands-on, involves a lot of science/chemistry daily, will let me have a life outside work, keep me above living paycheck to paycheck, and pays enough to be able to retire at all lol. I think a lot of people underestimate though how much +$300k loans accruing interest is. They cant immediately live lavishly from their postgrad jobs when they have to take care of their loan debt first
