  • Somanathapura with guide Mysore tourism Karnataka tourism temples of Karnataka.Somanathapura temple also known as Chennakesava temple at Somanathpura (also spelled Kesava temple, Somnathpur).Mysore tourism, Karnataka tourism, Karnataka temple.
This Hindu temple is located on the banks of River Kaveri at Somanathapura, Karnataka, India. The temple was consecrated in 1258 CE by Somanatha Dandanayaka, a general of the Hoysala King Narasimha III. It is located 38 kilometers from Mysuru city.
The temple is a model illustration of the Hoysala architecture. The main temple in the center is on a high star-shaped platform. The western sanctum was for a statue of Kesava, the northern sanctum of Janardhana and the southern sanctum of Venugopala, all forms of Vishnu. The outer walls, the inner walls, the pillars and the ceiling of the temple are intricately carved. The ancient stone carved temple of typical Hoysala design , the start shaped base of the temple is well preserved .
The Kesava temple is one of some 1,500 Hindu and Jain temples built by the Hoysala Empire kings in different parts of their kingdom. The other well studied Hoysala temples include those at Belur and Halebidu.
Keshava, Janardhana and Venugopala are names found in the Bhagavad Gita, all in the context of Krishna. The term Chennakeśava means "handsome Keshava". The Keshava temple at the Somanathapura is a temple of the Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism, and one of many Keshava temples built in or before the 13th century in different parts of India, as well as in Belur in 1117 CE about 170 kilometres.
The inscription is in old Kannada.
Previously this was also a famous movie location where movies songs where shot .Tamil super start Ajiths song Thendral Thendral Vanthu from movie Raasi was shoot here. Barthanavva Song from Simhadriya Simha Kannada Movie ft. Vishnuvardhan, Meena and Bhanupriya. was also shot here.
This temple and the others around are part of Mandya tourism. The nearest towns which catches tourists interest are Malavalli, Talakadu, Bannur, shivanasamudra, Gaganachukki falls and Bharachukki water Falls, River banks of cauvery . Mysore Tourism and Mandya tourism have many such hidden treasures waiting to be explored.
Those visiting Chennakesava Temple, Somanathapura on state highway 79 (T. Narasipura -Srirangapatna Road) make it a point to explore the Panchalingeshwara temple which lies a stone throw away just opposite the road in between the green fields. Both the stone carved temple along with the ruins of Lakshminarasimha temple are a treat to those who enjoy Hoysala architecture. These are temples of great heritage.
    How to reach

The distance is about 32km from Mysore.Take SH33 towards Malavalli and Bangalore to come out of Mysore city. At Bannur leave the highway and take the right diversion to Somnathpur. The other road route from Mysore is via T.Narsipur and Sosale. T.Narsipura is about 8km south of Somnathpur. This practice to destroy statues from the past is very old: early Christians destroyed statues and temples built by Romans and Greeks, later on the Protestants destroyed all icons and statues to be found in Catholic Churches, ISIS destroyed Buddha statues and statues found in Irack in archaeological museums, communists destroyed the statues of former kings and generals, later on the statues of Stalin and Lenin were destroyed or removed, in US the statues of Confederate generals, Columbus statues were decapitated or demolished. It is nothing new.

Extremely sad how the muslim invaders destroyed thousands of temples, massacred Hindus and looted Bharat. Glad Somanathapura is still standing. Thank you Sudeesh & Shobha for the detail coverage. How sweet the Kannada language is, the words seem to be etched on one's hearts while the beautiful architecture makes you gape in awe. Karnataka is truly blessed, love from an Odia brother ❤🙏.
There are many interesting things to note here, if you traverse bit by bit and compare, for instance, the 9th avatara of MahaVishnu is considered to be Buddha in Karnataka, while here in Odisha, it is considered to be lord Jagannath( that is, in every Vaishnava temple in Odisha, Jagannatha is shown as the 9th avatara of Sri Vishnu). Can any Kannadiga bro specify whether the 1st inference was correct or not about Karnataka?

Slow and steady guide , we can understand easily and remember the history . 👍👍👍👍 .
Very much sad to say that Malik Kafur a slave whom became general and later even took the Sultan position of the Delhi Sultanate for a short period . He not only looted but also destroyed many temples , I am in Madurai Tamilnadu and I knews the destruction and more than 300 years took to complete the famous Madurai Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple renovation . He destroyed the Kakatiyas and this was the time he got looted the famous Kohi _ noor diamond and I doesn't wants to say it's history because all of us knows how it changed hands with various rulers and at last now looted by the British and were was present in the British crown . It is considered after the loot of Hoysalas and Pandyas the tryant Malik Kafur looted many valuables and it was the largest of the loot ever done .
But one thing which I have to say is , if the brothers Veera Pandya and Sundara Pandya doesn't fight it would not be easy for Malik Kafur to invade and destroy these much temples in Tamilnadu but before he did the Kakatiya invasion and Hoysala invasion . After a attempt of defeat , Hoysalas , Kakatiyas and Pandyas should join alliance and has to fight the invading army or else they have to themselves invade weak possesions which would make an attempt of fear to the Delhi Sultanate's and they would not be much thinking to conquer or invade Deccan as because they are also facing at that time huge threats from the Mongols . That's why Allauddin Khilji sent Malik Kafur southwards while he ( Allauddin Khilji )stayed at Delhi and look after the Mongol threats .
If the course was as that the Pandyas doesn't defeat the Cholas and Cheras , it would be more complicate for the Delhi's army to face threat from 3 kingdoms , as because ancient Tamils fought along themselves but they doesn't even allowed a pit of land to be invaded and looted by foreigners . We cannot say Hoysalas as foriegners as because Hoysalas had matrimonial alliance with the Cholas and Pandyas . That's why when the Pandyas defeated Cholas , Hoysalas however saved the Cholas . So here only the foreigners called as Mlecchas or Yavanas was Delhi Sultanate and all Indian rulers whom where the natives was much pushed to the Deccan region and the northern kingdoms where subjugated . So it's not a lie that we defeat even the strong caliphate army . The Chalukyas themselves defeated the Arab invasion and made them for 200 years not to make any move as they had only Sindh and some parts what is said to be today as Pakistan . There's reference that Chalukya ruler Vikramaditya 2 defeated Arabs by his chieftain . But the Delhi army was now anyway established and was different from that of the Caliphate .Even the Ahom resistance was far great which was for long centuries to Sultan's and the Mughals . So why can't we defeat the Sultan army , it's because the Deccan region was at that time politically crisis and it was one of the crucial aimed Malik Kafur used the chance and defeated us .
This is not to talk of the history but some of the very famous temples were restored and others like this Somanathapura temple was not restored , and there were many temples like this , anyway the government had renovated and also rebuilt the Somnath temple at Gujarat by the former home minister Sardar Vallabhai Patel , but many other temples has not been took any steps to make them more conserved. But anyway thse sites were atleast known by youtubers like Sudeesh Kottikal .
Thanks a lot and a lots of gratitude to share sir 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

In order to keep this treasure alive and to attract more tourists, a new stone statue of the deities be re installed in the three temples following cleansing act means Shuddhi kriya of the premises and Moorthi Pratishthan ceremony. Then more donations will come and more tourists will visit then the temple complex will become famous. Even the damaged statues should also be repaired engaging the sculptors and using the latest joining chemicals. All these actions need money. So the temple be revived installing new statues of Vishnu in all the three temples. I don't know anything of Aagam Shastra. It's my opinion.
