- Howdy folks. This is the first of (probably) 3 clips we're releasing from a livestream version of The Erickson Exchange, a podcast ish series we record every once in a while.
In this video we talk about our thoughts on Nintendo's approach toward their video games in recent years, and how we feel they are leaving dedicated gamers behind.

Personally I dont like the whole everything has to be online these days. Maybe its because I'm a loner but I hate how the COD games all are basically online play with ur friends nowadays instead of having a proper story.
I hate to be that guy, but Nintendo owns only one-third of the Pokémon brand. Gamefreak makes the main games, but Nintendo and The Pokemon Company most likely pressure them.

I'm 100% with James on this 1. I get that there does come a point where it does become pretty much impossible to carry over everything from past games, for example I point to Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but in the past Nintendo would always strive to keep as much as they could.
But this is what really ticked me off with Pokemon. While I admit I am not an expert, I do dabble in 3D Modelling and when word got out that the models being used in Pokemon Sword and Shield were the same models in the 3DS games but with some minor changes, that was when I'd hit my limit with them and just decided to abandon that ship.
But back to the original topic; Games like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, and so don't suffer from this problem because every game offers a different story and world for you to explore. I never expected Super Mario Odyssey to be "Super Mario 3D World 2", I simply expected it to be a new game featuring our favourite plumber which is exactly what we got.
But when it comes to games like Mario Kart, I hate seeing them cut stuff, I still miss playing as Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, Wiggler, ROB, and so on but they have no problem making them appear in games like Mario Kart Tour which most people don't care about. I'd love to see them give Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the same amount of support they give Mario Kart Tour but it's looking like that ain't gonna happen.
I love Nintendo and I hate to speak of them like this but this is just the sad reality.
I too have issues with Nintendo. Joy con drift is a serious issue & the Nintendo executives don't care about, they even deny that it's real. They got the circle pad to work on the 3DS.
And I just tested this on Mario 3D land, the 3DS has some pretty advanced analog controls with the circle pad. Mario can walk at several different speeds depending on how much you push on the circle pad.
But they just couldn't do it for the Switch because they wanted to do it cheaper I guess. Nintendo doesn't love its customers anymore. Nintendo under Satoro Iwata, may God rest his soul, in general was a time when Nintendo had love for its fans.
They put a lot of love into their Wii & 3DS games especially under Iwata, but now they only care about money & it pisses me off! They're going to lose their fans & their money if they keep going down this path.
I could ramble on, but basically Nintendo needs to love its fans again.

I think that if Nintendo when to next gen with good graphics and a good new content with older games like legend of zelda or splatoon and maybe a new game with a good story and caraters that they can shape into there own unique characters and story i think that if they did that they could really be one of the best game companies out there

What else is new, what with them shutting down that famous UA-cam channel that extended music, that lackluster port known as 3d All Stars, not to mention the scummy thing they did with turning on the "Share Your Data" option in an update?

There's also the fact that Nintendo doesn't have competition. Hear me out here. PS and Xbox compete agaisnt each other because a lot of games are released on both systems and they are both consoles. But Nintendo is the only major video game company that does hand held. PS used to have a handheld in the PSP and PSP vista and I'm noit sure if Xbox ever released a handheld but they seemed to think that they "failed" when a lot of people including myself loved the PSP this means that Nintendo no longer has the need to compete with PS and Xbox because they have no competition for hand held market.

I agree with a lot of things you 2 said. But I think I remember a few years ago (I think it might have been during a breath of the wild developer interview) where Aonuma and/or Miyamoto said that they HAD hired all these younger talents to work on their biggest and newest games, and breath of the wild turned out the way it did bc of it. I’m sure people like Miyamoto, aonuma, Tezuka, etc. are plenty open minded, but I’m really not sure BoTW would’ve been as groundbreaking as it was without all the younger talent. And well there’s also Monolith Soft and they’re full of absolute legends
That's a perfect example then! Look at how great Breath of the Wild turned out with all this new talent behind it haha. A mixture of veterans and new talent is a great recipe in my opinion.

Its been so long since l last sat down and watched your videos and I agree.
Over time nintendo (and gamefreak since they own pokemon and are considered a separate company) just been getting worse over time with some of their IPs and cooperate decisions. Especially recently.
Not even mentioning what they were doing with the competitive scene for smash.

The Mainline Pokemon games are all handled by The Pokemon Company which is a 3-way partnership of Creatures Inc, Gamefreak, and Nintendo. In other words; All 3 of them are heavily involved in the course the Pokemon franchise takes.
The corporate side to The Pokemon Company contains higher ups from all 3 divisions whom the developers answer to. People need to realize that Masuda, Ohmori, James Turner, and so on all have to answer to them which naturally includes Nintendo. Why do you think Pokemon has remained exclusive to Nintendo systems? Because that's part of the agreement. If it was all up to Gamefreak, they'd likely release all the games for all the systems but clearly they cannot.

Yes because the TPC is own partly from Nintendo but that only really means they must only put pokemon games on Nintendo/Moble systems. but the Development of the main series. everything that goes in to the game and people behind making the game is mostly GameFreak/Creatures. Nintendo until recently has not played any major part in making any game From Red and Blue to Sword and Shield EXCPET! for Satoru Iwata who helped with Gold and Silver back when he worked at HAL. and Reacently when GameFreak moved to Nintnedo Headquarters. AND with that move i hope that means that the teams at nintendo can give GameFreak a helping hand so later pokemon games can be great.
@@GamingWarlord64 It's true that Gamefreak is the main team that handles the development of Pokemon but they are not the ones that set the deadlines, the Pokemon Company are the ones that decide that.
The blame is technically on all 3 because Gamefreak put their efforts into games like Pokemon USUM and Pokemon LG, something fans never asked for that should have been put towards Pokemon SwSh, and it's the fault of Nintendo's division of TPC for making the deadlines too tight in order to keep up their "1 Game every Year" nonsense.
As I said; All 3 parties have a hand in the pie so therefore all 3 are to blame for the course the franchise takes.

I know what you guys mean. But first I think its important to know is with companies your voice it heard through your wallet. If you're not sure with a game because the last one wasn't as good then don't buy it. Zelda is my favorite series of all time but I refuse to play anything from the BOTW world because I do not like the changes they made to it. I don't need to play their games as much as Nintendo needs me to buy their games.
Now for me I'm not a serious gamer but I've played games a long time and I do it for enjoyment. I don't want to be a pro gamer but I'll do a No Sword Run on the original NES Zelda just to see if I could (which I can). I don't invest much in graphics since I can enjoy games from the Atari age as long as it has good gameplay and maybe a good story. Usually Nintendo excels at delivering on this aspect. Most of my favorite games are Nintendo first party so that's why I stick with them.
Now I have quite a few problems with Nintendo and it does seem they're getting worst. First is the rather disposal of great IPs. F-Zero, Golden Sun, Custom Robo, Eternal Darkness, Nintendo Wars, Star Tropics, and the Mother Series are just abadoned and forgotten. If you want to play F-Zero GX or Eternal Darkness then you better have a Gamecube. If you want to play Lucas' Mother 3 then you'll need an emulator with a fan made translated copy. Nintendo realizes this as shown in their Japanese Wii exclusive game called Captain Rainbow which is about an island of forgotten Nintendo characters. I feel like there is a demand for a quite a few of these games and I just wish it didn't fall on deaf ears.
Another issue I have with Nintendo is how they treat their fans. Banning streamers showing their content, shutting down fan made games, or banning Smash Melee or Other M tournaments they are really hurting the fandom and shows how much Nintendo really cares about us.
So I know this was a really long speal and thank you for reading this far. But in short if people makes games I like then I'll buy it. If they don't then I'll turn on my NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, or Wii-U and play those games I know I love until Nintendo fixes itself.
Unfortunately, not buying the game from Nintendo's perspective is literally without consequence. I stopped following the Pokemon franchise after Pokemon USUM. I was planning on buying Pokemon Sword/Shield but given the BBND and just the clear lack of polish the games had, I decided to keep my money.
Did it matter? Nope, Pokemon still prints money and any motivation The Pokemon Company has to fix the issues is pretty much gone out of the window.
We can hope 1 day they really will begin to feel the blow to their wallets but as things stand right now, it's not happening.
