Fantastic advice. I am friends with two other detailers in town. One called me to do paint touch ups on a Camaro he was working on, and I gave him an assist on another vehicle he needed a hand with. The other I gave him business to put a front end PPF wrap on my new car because he does quality work. He doesn't do interiors, and I do so we help each other out.

I'm putting some effort into starting a small detailing business. What I've actually been trying to do is break down what each process done to the vehicle should cost individually
    For example
    Decontamination costs X amount
Tires /Rims cost X amount depending on a tire coating or a dressing
    Compounding costs X amount
Then I've been figuring out the time to do each process.
    Then add my hourly wage

Very interesting information, thanks for sharing. Watched a few of your videos on Detailers Business Academy, but did not see them “linked” over to DIY Detailing. It seems like the info you share here would be good to share there too - possible playlist? Thanks for considering this request. One other request … Detailing for me is not full time job, and don’t want it to be, it is what used to be called hobby-income. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on business side when it is part-time by choice.

Great point about 1099’s. As a former HR Leader, I can definitely tell you that many detailers think this is a cheaper way of doing things. The IRS (and state & other federal agencies) will eat you for lunch! And you can’t keep solid employees which could end up damaging your business.

Yvan, I've always taken a lot from your advice. Thank you! This series shifting from detailing to business is very timely and often a "reality check" for those (like myself) who came to this from a place of passion. I'll be following along.
Your perspective on some of the often-overlooked fundamentals, like insurance coverage, would be great. How to think about what you need and what questions to ask a potential provider. Other ideas might be how a detailing business should approach testing new products and methods for the sake of efficiency/profitability rather than "chasing perfection".

Another great video Yvan, I have looked the majority of the competition around me before doing my prices and guess what, I did what you said in the video ! I’m not the highest one but I’m definitly not the lowest also and far from them, Even if I’m new in the real world of detailing, I know who I am, how I work, how my service is, how I treat my customers so yes I charge more than others...even if I’m new in detailing business ! I just have to take your advise about what the customer want instead of what he need and I think I will be good for starting my business !

Yvan, the video subject I find good but you hit at too large of the picture from that simple concept.
I am struggling with the start-up phase, finding customers. At this stage I am not worried about the exit strategy, that could come as a pack and run decision, bad one at that. I understand the difference with mobile and shop, but ease of access leans more toward your first subject, bucket and hose. Commitment of a shop upfront is a big and part of a long range plan, something now I fight with given my HOA rules on listing a mobile business with your home address. Ugh! Keep this up Yvan for your experiences are so valuable and dead on point.

Sorry, but I have to disagree on mobile being more costly. People appreciate the fact that you come to them. Because of that, they are more flexible, and they don't have access to their vehicle for a shorter period of time. They are comfortable with moving appointments due to scheduling conflicts (I just got another job on your side of town, can I come by earlier? Sure!) The actual cost of a shop is definitely higher, but the upside is much greater. By having more space, and the ability to employ people easier, and the ability to do higher cost (margin) jobs makes the upside much greater. Having both would be best. Flexibility for customers is a game changer!

I think we would all like to have a shop, but finding a suitable location that doesn't cost an arm and a leg is often an obstacle. This is especially true if you live in a small town - limited locations, and much smaller customer base to support the overhead.

@@celestial7150 Is there a mechanical shop or body shop you could rent space from? That's a win, win, win situation. You help their cash flow, you find a location people already know, you get access to their customers and they, in turn, can provide more value to their existing customers.
