Any modern tank with a stabilization system can do what you are talking about...even the T-90 and T-14 can do it. That's 80s tech. Yes, this is a dig at Russian armor that can't even take a mine hit or withstand a hit in general, won't be broken down, or they don't even have enough to equip a tank battalion. Armor made of paper mache, claiming they can stop an M829A4 APFSDS, looking like it only has one forward speed and the other 7 are for reverse.

Also the difference is is that when a western tank hits a mine, the crew 9 time sour of ten is unharmed, when a Russian tank get hit its turret becomes part of the Russian space program. Also I find it funny when Russia shows videos they are always low quality grainy explosions far off in the distance, and Ukraine puts it in HD-4K. You can replace the tank, you can’t replace the crew, new crew take years to train, however considering Russia is resorting to WWI trench warfare because they haven’t a clue how to conduct modern warfare. 140mm is not for certain. That is the french proposal from Nexter, France has started some tests using a modified Leclerc tank with a newly design 140mm gun which seems to have done extremely well during testing. Rheinmatel (Germany) has also toyed with various canons, incluinding a 130mm gun with a shorter barrel which was portrayed as a good compromize.

Nope, darts are getting longer again. Hence why so many new guns are using autoloaders. Just too long for a manual loader to handle. If you're 5'11", have fun loading a shell the same height as you.
I think the darts are approaching their physical limits in speed by now. Guess all that propellant is mostly going to be needed for heavier darts (i.e. thicker uranium/tungsten core "telescopic" darts).

That's why the crew is reduced or not necessarily inside the tank. The armour is also upgraded. Like saving lives is the entire design concept of every western tank now. So mentioning it would be like "water is wet"

Tanks matter in the context of a land war between Russia and Ukraine because they share a border, the United States and Russia however, do not. Russia isn’t going to be using tanks in a war with the United States…. And the United States isn’t likely to use tanks in a war with Russia. NATO of course is a whole different can of worms because they do share borders and they do love the traditional set piece choreography of tanks….. but most future conflicts are going to be determined to buy drone systems and air power, not tank maneuvering

The drone could be easily defeated by scrambler or a jammer, not to mention mention the 30mm auto-cannon Or just add a modular top armor to protect from chemical based weapons, just like Challenger did

This tank was designed by Hasbro in the 80s as a GI Joe toy. Yes, all MBTs are big targets, but taking out most MBTs doesn't remove both a 100+ mm cannon and an autocannon from the fight.
Why do you think they added a vertical facing 30mm autocannon? Hint: it's to shoot down drones. This tank will be a lot less vulnerable to a serious battlefield threat. (I am just wondering if each tank will have its own radar, or if they will share a radar.)

The armata will either be built in larger numbers once they fix whatever last they stated was not yet up to spec or they decide against it and either start something new or keep upgrading their older fleets of tanks.
Not with that autocannon on top, which is specifically designed to spot and shoot down drones. Do not mistake Ukrainian warfare as the be-all-end-all of war.
@@kirtjames1353 Yes, they very well are. They are linked to radars which detect the drones and any rounds the gun fires, allowing the system to automatically "walk" the burst to the drone. Proximity airburst rounds have been developed for just this purpose.

We can make really nice futuristic tanks....the real question is how many can we make for a given budget. And that's why these tanks are ultimately useless in a real war, because the time and resources it takes to build one of these, can be used to build a dozen lesser tanks that can do nearly the same job. In modern warfare, numbers do mean a thing. And with the advent of hypersonic missiles, the entire way we think about the battlefield goes out the window. A hypersonic missile might even be more expensive than the tank it's destroying, but when you factor in how much damage that tank can cause if allowed to go unchecked, then it can easily surpass the cost of the hypersonic missile, therefore the hypersonic missiles cost is justified. And you don't need a big missile either, at those speeds even something smaller than a normal anti tank round would be enough to destroy the tank. What we've primarily seen with hypersonic missiles is the bigger variants meant to carry a payload to be used over a large area....for something you only need kinetic power with, and maybe a tiny amount of payload, these can be miniaturized quite a bit to the point that a hypersonic anti tank missile can actually end up costing relatively cheap. Hypersonic missiles change the game completely, because they mean nothing is safe, there is no defense, so if it's sent at a target, it's going to hit that target as long as it functions properly.
Projectile catching doesn't work at all the same with APFSDS as with APBC and has pretty much never been a thing with HESH or HEAT. APFSDS experiences practically no contact normalization and shatters rather than ricocheting if it doesn't begin to penetrate, so shot traps really aren't a thing.
You clearly never saw the Naval gun fitted in a metal shed at top a Centurion chassis the British came up with back in the day.. 183mm and bore/ barrel length to match.
those optics on the turret look pretty vulnerable to shrapnel to me. Paint balls would knock that tank out because, aimed at the optics, the paintballs would blind it.

It works out pretty well if you know how to use it. Against anything other than another MBT all you have to do is raise that top turret above a deffalade, fire on coordinates, and profit.

The armata will either be built in larger numbers once they fix whatever last they stated was not yet up to spec or they decide against it and either start something new or keep upgrading their older fleets of tanks.

@@kirtjames1353 Yes, they very well are. They are linked to radars which detect the drones and any rounds the gun fires, allowing the system to automatically "walk" the burst to the drone. Proximity airburst rounds have been developed for just this purpose.

We can make really nice futuristic tanks....the real question is how many can we make for a given budget. And that's why these tanks are ultimately useless in a real war, because the time and resources it takes to build one of these, can be used to build a dozen lesser tanks that can do nearly the same job. In modern warfare, numbers do mean a thing. And with the advent of hypersonic missiles, the entire way we think about the battlefield goes out the window. A hypersonic missile might even be more expensive than the tank it's destroying, but when you factor in how much damage that tank can cause if allowed to go unchecked, then it can easily surpass the cost of the hypersonic missile, therefore the hypersonic missiles cost is justified. And you don't need a big missile either, at those speeds even something smaller than a normal anti tank round would be enough to destroy the tank. What we've primarily seen with hypersonic missiles is the bigger variants meant to carry a payload to be used over a large area....for something you only need kinetic power with, and maybe a tiny amount of payload, these can be miniaturized quite a bit to the point that a hypersonic anti tank missile can actually end up costing relatively cheap. Hypersonic missiles change the game completely, because they mean nothing is safe, there is no defense, so if it's sent at a target, it's going to hit that target as long as it functions properly.

Projectile catching doesn't work at all the same with APFSDS as with APBC and has pretty much never been a thing with HESH or HEAT. APFSDS experiences practically no contact normalization and shatters rather than ricocheting if it doesn't begin to penetrate, so shot traps really aren't a thing.

those optics on the turret look pretty vulnerable to shrapnel to me. Paint balls would knock that tank out because, aimed at the optics, the paintballs would blind it.
