  • This week on The Horti-Culturalists we're taking another seasonal tour around Stephen's garden, Tugurium, to show you just what's going on at this early summer period of the year. Ironically it felt MUCH more like winter! This time of year the garden is all about foliage as we are just in between the profusion of spring and the fullness of mid summer! And we cleverly didn't make a spring tour video (!but we will!) however we did make a winter garden tour video which you can see here: • Winter tour of Stephen...
The plants we look at in this video are:
    Hosta 'Middle Ridge'
    Hosta 'Something Blue'
    Phygelius - Cape Fuchsia
    Hypericum 'Rowallane'
    Daucus decipiens
    Tagetes lemmonii
Humulus lupulus 'Aureus' - Golden Hop
    Semele androgyna
    Arctotis daisy
    Alstroemeria
    Viticella Clematis - 'Polish Spirit'
    Bronze Fennel
    Sambucus Nigra - 'Black Tower'
    Jerusalem artichoke
Atriplex hortensis rubra - Purple Orach
    Sonchus palmensis
    Sonchus canariensis
    Lyonothamnus
    Echium pininana
    Eryngium pandanifolium
    Tetrapanax papyrifer
    Araucaria rulei
    Ilex cornuta - Chinese Holly
    Philadelphus 'Virginal'
    Musschia wollastonii
    Abutilon 'Goblin?'
    Philadelphus mexicanus
    Agapetes serpens

There is no shortage of magnificent plants in that garden, but the highlight of the experience , to me, is the passion of the gardener! I love your Wonga pigeon, as well! I will have to look it up! Hugs from Algarve.

As usual, both informative and entertaining! Your channel is definitely one of the best horticultural features on UA-cam, if not the best. Really happy to see that plants people can have a sense of humour. The garden world is often so unnecessarily serious. Thanks and greetings from Belgium! Patrick

The scent of the Philadelphia Mexicanus is one I associate with Christmas and happily sit on my father's decking and take in This shrub is one that will travel with me to my new home and bring it's scent form and memories of my father and mother.

Gardener in the pacific north west. Love your channel and it always gives me a laugh about the difference in our seasons. Hellebores, daffodils, and crocus are all blooming and a bit earlier than last year after our extra warm December.

I am into birds and nearly fell off the couch seeing the wonga pigeon walking in so close to you 😮😄😄 I could hear it calling before it walked into the frame and O thought what is going on?!.. Funny little bugger. 😄 The story behind it is pretty cool, how it stayed there with you! Love it 😄 Greetings, Judit

Thank you both for your amazing, instructive, humoristic garden/plants programs. Q: Maybe I missed it, but what is your opinion about a perfect lawn in the garden. With an English Allett mower I have a lawn with stripes. I love it, but my wife says it's to much. Greetings from The Netherlands. Jacob du Boeuff

Love your program and never miss an episode.
I have a Philadelphus in my Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island yard. Not sure of the variety but it's probably lewisii. It is huge and has reached the windows of the second floor of the house. I love it... don't want to lose it's beautiful perfume. Can I cut it close to the ground and be confident that it will return in all it's fragrant mock orange glory? Thanks Maureen

How much root space does an Echium pininana require? Could it be a potentially suitable plant to grow a row to get some height in a narrow space alongside a (typical suburban) driveway next to a fence in full sun?

How long does it take for a Finger Lime or Caviar Lime to produce fruit? I planted a small tree in zone 11b 2.5 years ago,. Although the tree looks healthy, it has yet to bear fruit.

Hi Guys, Just wondering what the best way to design and plant a decidous woodland garden would be. I live in tasmania and have been collecting a varitiy of cool decidous trees including oregon maple, dawn redwood and cherry birch, and have a resonable plot to put them. The idea being to have a shade garden in the summer and sun in the winter. Any advice would be helpfull.

    • @thehorti-culturalists
      @thehorti-culturalists  7 місяців тому

Firstly I would suggest repeat planting of at least one species to make a truly woodland look so use them all but repeat one. Prepare the ground well with loads of organic material and mulch well to make sure when you plant the understory that weeds are gone. Regards Stephen
