    I been thinking about building these for my gaming room.

    Why don't you use a Mega 2650 and Port A for a full 8x8 matrix? Yes they are more expensive but that 8k of ram and full ports not shared with the serial IO on pins Zero and One on a Uno is useful. I have, it works just as well.

      Because UNO's are ubiquitous and I was going for a very, very long ticker rather than a matrix. it is easy enough to switch the PORTs if you want to run this code on a MEGA, and then you can have a taller ticker since the serial pins are not shared.

      @@bigjoshlevine I know, The mods my dad did to your original code required serial communications and strip on pin 1 was an issue. Have you tried the analog pins on a micro?

      @@knightsun2920 I have not, but should be possible. Pretty much anything is possible, so all depends on what equipment you have and what you are trying to make!

    Excellent project. Many thanks for sharing.

    The Nano 33 IoT has built in wifi that would be great for something like this. However, the 33 IoT is a different architecture so the code doesn't port. Still seems like the next natural evolution on this.

      If you want WiFi, then ESP32 is probably the easiest way to get there. This project specifically uses an Arduino UNO because they are simple and ubiquitous.

      @@bigjoshlevine Seems that a lot of newer boards have enough processing power that the assembly level code is unnecessary. I am going to give it a go with the help of the FastLED library.

      @@SpeculatorSeth Absolutely! It is only hard to do on something highly memory constrained like an UNO, but that was kind of the point of this project!

    Would it be possible to make a scrolling stock / headline ticker with recent data? I don’t know how I’d feed live data to the strips, let alone make the ticket… lol.
    Edit: I also would like to know if they consume a lot of electricity while in use.

    • @bigjoshlevine
      @bigjoshlevine  3 роки тому +1

      Easy! Find some Python program that gets real time prices from the internet and then just a some code to format them the way you want them to look on the sign and send them out the serial port.
      The one shown in the video is running off of a 2 amp USB charger, so must use less than 2 amp * 5 volts = 10 watts. Bigger and brighter signs will use more.

      @@bigjoshlevine and even at full brightness it only needs 5V of power? How long do you think my ticker tape can be, at full brightness, before I need more power

    • @bigjoshlevine
      @bigjoshlevine  Рік тому

      @@coldshaker9668 More brightness needs more *current* rather than voltage (always 5V). You can supply more current by using a bigger power supply, or by using more power supplies - ideally with the supplies distributed along the length. Check out this example of a long strip with power supplies connected along the length... ua-cam.com/video/I-lR19_kigs/v-deo.html
