3:00 A note about the Apollo 12 mission that was struck by lightning (twice) on ascent. The first lightning strike at 36 seconds caused the three fuel cells (think of fuel cells as generators that use the fuel and oxidizer from the main tanks) to shut down. The Spacecraft has three auxiliary batteries which the system automatically switched over to. This sudden draw of power from the batteries caused the voltage to temporarily drop which in turn caused many systems to start producing garbage data. What happened is that a bunch of warning lights popped up on the control panels (just like in a car) with a bunch of different systems going offline. The issues were hard to debug because the telemetry was garbled. However they eventually solved the problem by flipping a switch changing the SCE (Signal Conditioning Electronics) to auxiliary power which sort of fixed the issue and allowed them to reach orbit and have more time to diagnose and fix issues.
