As a native Texas I didn't expect to lose power for seven days in the snow of Feb of 2021. I had plenty of pantry food (& water), but no way to cook it. We ate gas station food for a couple of days, no big deal, but could have been worse. Emergency cooking is something I take much more seriously now.
I keep up with a lot of prepper videos. you guys are like the ultimate preppers you really have it in your hearts you're very thorough you break it down you study and analyze it. I generally don't comment but you guys are awesome. Thanks 😊
AGREED!
Y'all not crazy, y'all are insanely SMART, thank y'all for what you do.👍👍💯💯
I absolutely LOVE my Coleman oven. They sell for under $40 and I have made bread, muffins, cookies, etc.
Everything turns out perfect once you realize the interior is hotter than the what it reads on the outside door. Putting a baking tile or brick on the bottom is what helps give the oven even heating. Just set it on one burner of a propane camping stove. Worth walking outside to get those delicious baked goods during a power outage!
I love the safe heat. Easy storage too. I took scrap wood (4) 2x4s, 2 ft long each. Screwed 2 of them together on top of each other. Then screwed the 2 on top of each other. Place them about 3 ft apart on top of a counter. I took my oven rack out and placed it on the top of the 2x4s. Placed safe heat underneath the rack (I did it on my glass top stove). Big enough space for 2 safe heat to cook in both a pot and a pan.
Iron skillets are the best!
Thank you so much! Y'all are amazing! Having lived through the recent Texas snow-mageddon, with no power for 4 days in -2 degree weather, we are researching safe options for cooking and heating. Thanks so much, you're clear, concise and practical! And y'all have a great sense of humor!
Tremendously well organized information. Thank you.
Than you guys.. most people need to know safety of cooking inside without power.
I really love the information but you guys are willing to share with all of us! May you be blessed
A friend of mine who is a very talented welder (Husband of Suzanne that you know) helped me design and build this rocket stove. We have built 5 of them so far and are very impressed with the heat they generate and the portability, another arrow in our quiver for cooking well in a stressful situation. Thanks for your help to build confidence in my skills! (unable to post photo and video.
I found an old tea light wax warmer.. the base could easily hold a small pot. 1$
Oatmeal
Instant grits
Ramen
Can soup or chili
Instant rice ( maybe)
I would have never thought about it if out werent for your vids
Loved all the information. Thank you for putting it all together for us!
Right now Im going through a shft. My stove just died. But I have a backup.
Thank you for showing the many options of off-grid cooking. For fuel for the butane stove. Check out Asian market stores. They have cases of these guys in packs of 4 or five for $5/pk. Also to maximize natural fuel, any leftover burning wood we boil water and store it in a large 2L Air Pot thermos for hot drinks later.
Asian markets have so many goodies for prepping.
This is so dang good!! Getting a gameplan!
Love the tea lights in oven idea!
Good timing! At 5pm Pacific Time today they announced rolling power blackout alert for tomorrow in Western States from California to New Mexico. Tomorrow is also peak temperature day in the current heat wave, plus a Spare the Air day.
Harvested my first snap peas yesterday from my plot in community garden, despite attack of the birds the first week of planting. The idea of garden cats won’t work here, unless I declare them “service animal”. More snap peas ripe tomorrow. Having lots of fun.
You know I will. I grew up with A/C, and still don’t have A/C (except in cars) but use all of the passive cooling methods for our home. Plus, a few weeks ago we replaced ALL of our outside windows with super rated double pane ones. The difference is amazing. Thank goodness we live where the cold flows first after 2 or 3 days of hot weather.
Living in the deep south, cooking outside is best. I have a rocket stove outside. My neighbor has a fire pit that they put a rack over and cook on.
Oh
!
What if there’s a scenario where it’s dangerous to go outside?
A very excellent and informative video. Thank you for this useful information.
An experiment that I contemplate but have not performed yet involves outdoor charcoal cooking. I do not have a camp dutch oven but do have two stove top cast iron dutch ovens. One is 4 quart capacity and one is 7 quart capacity. They seem to nest reasonably one within the other. What I plan to do is line the larger pot with aluminum foil, light 8-10 charcoal briquets and distribute them around the bottom and attempt to cook a stew in the smaller pot. It may be necessary to prop the smaller pot on metal chopsticks to increase ventilation a bit. I think this may be a fairly economical way to use charcoal but will find out when the outdoors is a bit cooler than now.
Any updates?
200 pounds of charcoal, 8 twenty pound propane, 50 one pound propane, 10 gallons white gas (Colman), butane, iso propane, wood. Finally an item that I fill that I’m ready!
@Utah Mike where do you store your little 1lb propane bottles?
@@JessieLynn6697 storage shed, I was at a meet & greet with local fire department-they suggested it. They where adamant Do not store fuel in home.
If you have to use the campfire set up, use the racks out of your oven. In fact my oven has 2 racks and a broiler pan. All could be used over a campfire.
Wow lots of options. And I love the option of helping your neighbors to
As always slap full of great information. Really enjoy my go sun solar cooker. The thermos is a great idea for a single meal
Going with Safe sterno because we don’t have a lot of sunlight here
Homemade alcohol stove (made from 2 soda cans, a nail, and rock-wool).
Alcohol is easily made (and therefore renewable), clean burning (no Carbon Monoxide).
The stove itself can be designed to deliver a constant and safe amount of heat, though I would advise using a floor tile to protect kitchen worktops 😁😁😁.
Like using a Thermos flask as well.
Have used it myself to cook pasta and rice, and would think it would be perfect to cook freeze-dried food for a hot meal.
Loving the channel, even more.
Peace and Blessings to all
Amazing video that has such a nice clear explanation and helpful list of resources available for us in the description. Thank you for helping people to learn all possible options available in case of emergency!
u did it again, Awesome VIDEO.. Thanks for the time to make and process this video for us.. Great Info!!
Skills and knowledge,l ike in this excellent series, are your best preps. But don't forget to regularly practice the skills you learn.
We have been living offgrid for 8 years and these options work well for us. For everyday uses in the summer we have a natural gas full size stove with oven changed over to propane. We also just got a char griller acorn that is an excellent cooking option. It's the best grill we have ever owned. And for winter a traditional wood cook stove. We have 17 acres so we have an endless supply of wood and can also make charcoal
Sounds like you guys are living the good life! Smart thinking!
The camp chef oven is the exact same height as a regular stove top when it's in the back of a grand caravan. I use the blowtorch tanks they're the slightly smaller by volume shorter runtime, but i find them easier to find and they are usually cheaper by volume. They're also thinner than the regular green bottles so fit behind the oven nicer too.
Wow! Such a wealth of information! Thank you so much!
@@TheProvidentPrepper I especially liked the ways to cook without smoke that attracts others. Have you tried Mountain House freeze-dried meals?
Thank you very much for your advises!where can i find the cooking stove with the water tank by the side?
Made a 'hay box' a few years back to save fuel and used expanded polystyrene as insulation. BAD idea. The heat from the pot started to melt it slightly and released gasses that permeated all of my food, which had to be thrown away. It was foul smelling (and I did try tasting it, yuck!)
Excellent video guys! Thank you
I my self soooo want to purchase a solar cooker. I think it’s the smartest alternative, and use my Colman stove or my fondue burner it gets really hot.
Awesome once again... I keep learning great stuff, all thanks to the both of you! Thank you for sharing.
Hello from the Jersey. Question for your hubby. Were should I store lamp oil? I have it in my top floor with my food. I do not know if the plastic bottle will leak. What dose Johnathan suggest.
Foil packs on grill when you don't have electricity or water is the best.
Do you have a video on storing fuels safely and how long they last
@@TheProvidentPrepper O man I am really kicking myself. I saw one of those yellow cabinets that you mention in your article at habitat re store several months ago for maybe a $100. But I had no idea what it was used for
The best on UA-cam.
Great ideas! Thanks!
Hi, I read a post you had surgery. Hope everything went well. 🙏 I recently saw a vintage beautiful wood burning stove for sale in good condition. If i live in Ca would this only be helpful to cook during winter ? Can you only use it outside and not in garage because of smoke/ sprinklers going off I can imagine? I have a big family but I'm having to prep little by little. My spouse isn't against me but I'm sure thinks I'm crazy so doing this alone.
Lots of great information!
this is a great idea
With my grandson, we built a two tower rocket stove with yard red bricks, 2 burner, one small, one larger.
Boy, I thought that I had carbon monoxide in the house one day when I woke up with a headache that you wouldn't even believe. It had been there since the day before. So I immediately left the house and went to Lowe's and bought two carbon monoxide detectors. They didn't have any with a readout, yet they still cost a small fortune. I'm sure I could have gotten a better deal on Amazon, but I had to take what I could get. I agree that the digital readout is much nicer. But, I've got what I've got now. I was lucky that I did not have an issue with carbon monoxide that day, but it just reminded me of how important the detectors are.
Well, thanks for the tips and i have myself a Trangia stove wich is nice i use alcohol in at the moment but i need to get something to have extra because i follow the rule 1 is none 2 is 1.
So for that solar funnel cooker, would it work to wrap the jar in a black sock?
Just random thoughts while thinking about emergency power. Generatters about solar generator etc.
How would the freeze dyer work with these alternate energy sources. I know you break down energy usage as do some other you tubers. I am Very bad at kw hours Watts yada yada. Would the freezer dryer remain a viable long term piece of equipment?
Iknow along with my Cosori dehydrator. and solar drying in Florida I would be one of the ways to preserving foods in my freezer along with my propane burner and canning jars. Once those are handled I would not use electric freezer for storage again till gris is up and stable. But I thought once the immediate food is handled that going forward if the freezer dryer Could be run that would be more ideal than canning or in addition to canning as propane may not be easy to obtain. A large dollar array with storage batteries May be reasonable. Using my propane for cooking a nd some canning. Any thoughts?
Kris in Orlando
Hey Kristie...great questions! You can definitely design and build a solar power system that would run the freeze-dryer, but it would need to be fairly large, and much bigger than most (or perhaps all) of the portable power stations on the market. On average, our freeze-dryer batches run for about a day and consume about 15,000 watt-hours. Most of the power stations store about 2000 watt-hours or less and could not charge enough with solar to come close to keeping up. Freeze-dryers are a great tool for preparing now, but probably not very usable in a grid-down crisis when available energy will be needed for more pressing needs. Thanks for being part of the solution!!
Just got a sun Oven. I love it and the food is delicious.
New to your channel, why not.....Las Vegas
Very good information 👌
I have all the back up heat sources, able to cook without power, battery operated fans, solar lights, etc. But Washington State was hit by a heat wave! 112* today! My HVAK can't keep up. 89* inside with ac and fans. I had to bug out to a neighbors house!
U r my Heros!! I’ve learned from u than anyone. Wish my husband was on board but he’s not . Thx🐾💕
Very thorough discussion, thanks
Have you heard of the Omnia oven? It is used on the stove top.
Ty for a great video. Can I use my stove top and a oven during a power outage?
Could you do a review on the "Energy Wise Premium Solar Oven" as seen on Amazon. I have priced the more expensive ovens and they are out of my budget. Can this solar cooker perform as the more expensive ones???
Remember to write down or print cos power outage means no computer, no internet & no mobile communication.
Yeah. If your using vids, watch repeatedly to memorize info a well as write it down
I know this is an older video but I'm hoping someone sees this question and can help me. I have a small tv "dish" and am thinking of painting it with chrome pain to make a solar oven out of it. Can anyone tell me if this paint would be safe to have around food?
I originally was going to use my small chest freezer as an oven but we have tunneling squirrels who have eaten my huge garden so now the freezer is a giant garden pot! Finally something the squirrels cant get to and eat all my veggies.
@@TheProvidentPrepper
Wow, thank you, I didn't even know about BBQ paint! {my BBQ & smoker could use it too lol}
I will be sure to send pix after my project is done. Being old and disabled it takes me a little longer to do things as hubs had a stroke and is unable to help me.
I already disassembled the stand that was attached but don't have a clear idea what I'm going to replace it with, something easily adjustable is the plan. I live in the Cali desert and it's still in the 80's & 90's but I still need to be able to track the sun.
I just found the paint on Amazon, figuring 2 cans should work. Also seeing the silver BBQ paint so I might just get some for whatever I am going to cover it all with unless I just use the silver car sun shade like you showed on one of the vids.
Thank you for helping me!
@@TheProvidentPrepper No problem, glad to share. Since the cable companies won't take the dishes back & so many just leave them on the roof it seems a good way to upcycle these things with a very good supply available.
Hubs and I talked today about a stand & came up with: using fence posts and a piece of chain link fencing and just setting the dish in it's own little hammock to make it very easy to change directions and follow the sun.
Hi Virginia...sorry I am late to this discussion. If I understand right, you are going to use the tv dish (painted with a chrome paint) to reflect energy into a cooking box? If so, that seems like an interesting and reasonable approach. I would be interested to see pictures or a sketch of how this would work. I am always excited to see people being creative to get the job done. You may also want to look at other designs online...there are some really creative ideas. Keep me posted. Thanks for being part of the solution!
@@JonathanBJones Sorry I am so late to get back, I'm a caregiver to my DH who is disabled due to stroke & several other medical probs so my time is divided into bite sized pieces lol.
I already painted the dish and a friend built a platform for it. I just need to do the surround and cook something on it! I was trying to figure out how to possibly cut a shower door to build a cover but I think that is off the table {glass cutter told me it's almost impossible to cut that shatter proof glass} so now I am trying to figure out how to use my silver windshield cover around the edges {frame wise to hold it}; I have a lot of tulle {netting like in bridal veils, I buy bolts of it to use on veggie plants against the bugs} so I figured I can use it above the food against bugs & dirt. Obviously I'm still experimenting but feel this project is has a good chance of succeeding, unlike my fight with the burrowing squirrels!
Hints welcome!
I live upstairs in an apartment. I won't be able to go outside in an emergency. I do have two rooms (bed, craft) that I will not be using in case of emergency, and can vent through them. After watching your videos I can't decide which cooking sources are best for me ( your dual cooking-heating source is no longer being made :( Can you recommend what to cook with that is safe for apartment dwellers with limited or no vent sources?
Thank you @@TheProvidentPrepper

What is the difference between sterno and safe heat?
How would you go about preparing if living in a 15ft old caravan? Storage is tricky!!
Store your preps elsewhere. Find a friend or family member with more space available. Friends and neighbours are some of the best pre p s.
Can anyone tell me if you can buy bags of rice and put them still in the bag and put it in a 5 gallon container for years
I cook 80% of all of my food outside. I use an old converted grill to use wood.
