The first time I can remember hearing this hymn was at the funeral of a high school friend who was killed in vietnam. He was barely out of school. That Was 1968. I have never forgotten it.
I was a choir boy growing up in England. We sang this hymn very often at Evensong. I noticed that it made many people cry.l didn't understand, now at my age I do.
I was thinking about this hymn yesterday, and here it is my feed today. I often sing it softly as twilight falls, especially when I think about how many of my family and friends have preceded me in the inevitable journey. It is gives solace to the lonely. Thank you.
Me neither. Sometimes I try to sing along, but since my voice broke when I reached puberty, (I used to sing in a boys choir), I can hardly carry a tune now.
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide When other helpers fail and comforts flee Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away Change and decay in all around I see O Thou who changest not, abide with me I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me Abide with me, abide with me
This takes me back to my seminary days. There was a real sense of peace as we sang this hymn, accompanied by the small chapel organ, before retiring for the night.
I hope when you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror, you see a reflection of an angel. You are so talented. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! You made many people cry with this video, and wish they could perform as you do. Enjoy your youth!
Absolutely achingly beautiful .. you literally put your heart and soul into your playing .. so beautiful to see as well as to hear .. Truly appreciated the different sounds you achieved using the pedals and stops .. playing an organ well demands a true artist.. and you are definitely that. .. Thank you so much for your brilliant playing .. and especially allowing us to hear you play via video ⚘ Jen999💜💙
I heard this hymn being sung in the war movie, "A Bridge Too Far" when wounded British paratroopers sang this song that they were being taken prisoner by the Germans. It is a great hymn to be song to remember the comfort of the Lord in sorrow and hardship.
The first time I heard it was from that movie. I was in my elementary school days. It haunted me till this very day. That hymn for me is the hymn of all hymns.
Beautiful piece .One of my favourite hymns of all times .Had that as one of my mum and dads funeral hymns .In fact mum after dad died very suddenly mum wrote list of her wishes and Abide With Me Was One of her choices . Thanks so much .x
I had this at my mother's funeral and it will be at my father's funderal when the time comes and also at my own, hopefully not for some years! It is indeed beautiful and Ben plays it brilliantly
Ben, as small a tracker organ as this one seems to be, you make it sing eloquently. Like several other commenters, this hymn was played at my wife's funeral before the homily. Please keep posting hymn tunes.
Thanks so much John, this means a lot to me. The organ sounds much bigger thanks to the acoustic- Olivier Latry gave a recital here and said it sounded like a cathedral organ!
Thank you for not taking this at a lugubrious pace. You kept it moving, but still well-phrased and singable. Also enjoying your harmonies on the "organist's" verse.
There are many wonder I have learned from Ben. One certainly is slowing of hymns. Our parish has 😅a well trained talented organist but I may suggest slowing hymns!! Possibly jovial speed in hymns is an American malady?😮
I agree Ben and you played it beautifully. I love these pipe organs very much it is always a treat to see the other keys coupled with what you play. Very beautiful indeed.
I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness Where is deaths sting? Where grave thy victory? I triumph still if thou abide with me.
I have a few hymn requests. I was Glad that was played at Prince William and Kate's wedding, Onward Christian Solider, and All Creatures of Our God and King. You do such an amazing job with playing the organs.
The finest voice version of this touching gym can be found in the 2001 film “Latter Days”. You may find the clip on you tube. I never tire of it. Enjoy Ben Cheers.
Beautiful legato playing Ben. Your use of the different keyboards is so effective. Well done. I also accompany our congregation quite often with this Hymn. Rudi from South Africa

Beautifully done, Bravo!!!! For suggestions I'd love to hear The Holy City, as I believe it's another beautiful hymn and gives this gorgeous instrument another chance to REALLY shine! Congrats on an AMAZING job!
Here are the lyrics in english and croatian: Ostani sa mnom, brzo pada večer Abide with me, fast falls the eventide Tama se produbljuje Gospodine, sa mnom ostani The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide Kad drugi pomagači zakažu i utjehe pobjegnu When other helpers fail and comforts flee Pomoć nemoćnih, o, ostani sa mnom Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me Swift do kraja istječe životni mali dan Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day Zemaljske radosti se gase, njena slava nestaje Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away Promjenu i propadanje posvuda vidim Change and decay in all around I see O Ti koji se ne mijenjaš, ostani sa mnom O Thou who changest not, abide with me Ne bojim se neprijatelja, s Tobom pri ruci da me blagosloviš I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless Bolesti nemaju težinu, a suze nemaju gorčinu Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness Gdje je žalac smrti? My understanding is that the author of the hymn (Henry Francis Lyte?) was a priest who wrote when he was actually dying. (Of TB?) So it's utterly honest, from a believer looking death in the face.
This was the most requested funeral hymn I played. In the last verse I built up to full organ, with a lift in the last line at each of the commas. This gave extra power to the words.
This tune, hymn isn't known that well here in the U.S, which is a shame. I want to suggest Abide in Me to Elder Phillip, in our church, who spent a year (or more) in the U.K. after seminary, doing his musical internship. He is quite familiar with English hymns.
Excellent example of how to get different colours from a 2-manual instrument. I'd guess there are easily twice as many again. I was hoping for a verse with lots of suspensions (on most notes!), but this would probably not be appreciated by an accompanying choir. Lovely tempo, not dirgy.
Lovely, fabulous job. When I was a little girl, Granny always cried when this hymn was played. Now I am old and I understand why.
Me too.😢
My granny played this. The words are so moving.
Yep it’s commonly played at funerals that’s why it’s such a moving hymn
The first time I can remember hearing this hymn was at the funeral of a high school friend who was killed in vietnam. He was barely out of school. That Was 1968. I have never forgotten it.

Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee

Yes me too now in my nineties and many now living with Jesus in my family and friends 🙏❤
I love hymns like this! Sad thing is, I generally can’t sing them, as the emotion overcomes me!
Me too.
Me neither. Sometimes I try to sing along, but since my voice broke when I reached puberty, (I used to sing in a boys choir), I can hardly carry a tune now.
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide

The lyrics are so moving, so gorgeous, but that last verse, it never fails to bring the tears . . . Thank you for posting this in the comments
Thank you!
Powerful hymn by Henry Francis Lyte
That's a marvellous performance. It made me feel that I am entering through the gates of Heaven while the music was being played. Amen💖🙏🙏🙏💖

I listen to you from New England USA. Thank you for the beautiful music and teachings about the churches
This was my Dad’s favorite hymn..i like it a lot too..thank you!
Thank you for those precious minutes of calm.

This hymn was sung at my Mothers graveside, I love the poetry and history of this hymn.
I heard this hymn being sung in the war movie, "A Bridge Too Far" when wounded British paratroopers sang this song that they were being taken prisoner by the Germans.

wow , this church is so blessed to have you Ben.
Oh Lord abide with me 🙏🙏please don't leave me!
Jesus loves you
Peace to you as well in Jesus' name love
Amen
He won't
Jesus dearly loves us. Sometimes we need him more and he reveals himself in a sunset or the whisper of the wind.

Thank you for sharing the hymns of Praise with the You Tube world.
The hymn that helps me sleep at night
Ben, you have such a wonderful gift, even more so that you share that gift. Nice!
Superbe. Merci à vous pour cette très belle interprétation. ⚜️😉

. What a community you have
Love those subtle chord changes you do on this simple tune!
Oh how I miss the organ at our church-beautiful job!
I cry everytime I hear this.
Tempo ,registration , beautiful ,and you let the light in Ben, thank you
I love the way you play these modest size pipe organs , you know how to coax everything from them. This one is very beautiful.
Very Nice rendition of this Hymn. Nice to hear someone play with true feeling.
Very well played. Great phrasing and nice variations on the last few verses.
Simply put: beautifully played, with true understanding of the hymn.
I miss my grandmother 😭😭💞💞🇿🇲🇿🇲love you so much. I wish she could be here to help us!! Mama mama mama😭😭
Thank you for not taking this at a lugubrious pace. You kept it moving, but still well-phrased and singable. Also enjoying your harmonies on the "organist's" verse.

@@mafakefootSlowing hymns can make it harder to sing complete phrases, to make sense of the poetry.
Loved this hymn as a church chorister
I love this song!
The solemnity and comfort of this performance are unrivaled, indescribable and outclassing
❤ amen 😊
Very meaningful voicing.
Yes this Hymn has one of the most moving sounds especially at a funeral.
My absolute favorite hymn. Thank you for this performance.
I agree Ben and you played it beautifully. I love these pipe organs very much it is always a treat to see the other keys coupled with what you play. Very beautiful indeed.
I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight and tears no bitterness
Where is deaths sting?
Where grave thy victory?
I triumph still if thou abide with me.
I was brought up with this hymn on an 80 RPM 12" record sung by Dame Clara Butt, the greatest of contraltos. Thanks, Ben, you have done this justice.
Well done. Beautiful organ.
Thank you!! A great hymn,
beautifully voiced and lovingly performed! ❤
Common for many Episcopal processionals. Beautiful!
From another church organist over here in New York - gorgeous! I'm totally borrowing your chord changes in the last verse!
This is what I would like to be played at my funeral.
Beautiful playing.
I have a few hymn requests. I was Glad that was played at Prince William and Kate's wedding, Onward Christian Solider, and All Creatures of Our God and King. You do such an amazing job with playing the organs.
A glorious hymn
Wow beautiful please upload many videos
Beautifully played. A lovely hymn.
Very beautiful played ❣❣❣
I love this Hymn. Thank you!!
Keep playing forever
The finest voice version of this touching gym can be found in the 2001 film “Latter Days”. You may find the clip on you tube. I never tire of it. Enjoy Ben Cheers.
Beautiful. Discovered this hymn just yesterday and I had it on my church hymnary! I will try to teach it here in Portugal.
You beauty 👍.
Thank you for a lovely performance
Beautiful legato playing Ben. Your use of the different keyboards is so effective. Well done. I also accompany our congregation quite often with this Hymn. Rudi from South Africa
Enlivening!!!

So beautiful. Thank you.
Indeed. One of my favorites.
Fabulous
Thanks
Thank you!
Beautiful! Great registration! Good crisp sound. Thanks!
Love this. Well played, my friend.
Beautiful video work, the whole presentation is pefection!
Wonderful music Ben.
I grew up singing this hymn at so many funerals.
Perfection!
[V1]
Reste avec moi !
C'est l'heure où le jour baisse.
L'ombre grandit... Seigneur, attarde-Toi !
Tous les appuis manquent à ma faiblesse :
Force du faible, ô Christ, reste avec moi !
[V2]
Le flot des jours rapidement s'écoule ;
Leur gloire est vaine et leur bonheur déçoit ;
Tout change et meurt,
tout chancelle et s'écroule...
Toi qui ne changes point, reste avec moi !
[V6]
Je ne crains rien quand ton bras me protège ;
Mes pleurs n'ont plus d'amertume, et l'effroi
Que m'inspiraient la mort et son cortège
A disparu... Seigneur, reste avec moi !
[V7]
Montre ta croix à ma vue expirante,
Et que ton ciel s'illumine à ma foi !
L'ombre s'enfuit, voici l'aube éclatante !...
Dans la vie et la mort, reste avec moi !
Beautiful.
very nice recording...All notes heard...the BASS is a big thing to me
perfection
Absolutely banging tune
Beautifully done, Bravo!!!! For suggestions I'd love to hear The Holy City, as I believe it's another beautiful hymn and gives this gorgeous instrument another chance to REALLY shine! Congrats on an AMAZING job!

Help of the helpless, o, abide with me.
Beautiful - thank you 🙂
Very beautifully played. I shall soon upload my little ornamented version of this tune.🙂
Beautiful!!
Friede Friede den Nahen und den Fernen. Ich will sie heilen, spricht der Herr
Here are the lyrics in english and croatian:
Ostani sa mnom, brzo pada večer
Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
Tama se produbljuje Gospodine, sa mnom ostani
The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide
Kad drugi pomagači zakažu i utjehe pobjegnu
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Pomoć nemoćnih, o, ostani sa mnom
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me
Swift do kraja istječe životni mali dan
Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day
Zemaljske radosti se gase, njena slava nestaje
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away
Promjenu i propadanje posvuda vidim
Change and decay in all around I see
O Ti koji se ne mijenjaš, ostani sa mnom
O Thou who changest not, abide with me
Ne bojim se neprijatelja, s Tobom pri ruci da me blagosloviš
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Bolesti nemaju težinu, a suze nemaju gorčinu
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness
Gdje je žalac smrti?
Where is death's sting?
Gdje, grobe, tvoja pobjeda?
Where, grave, thy victory?
I dalje trijumfiram, ako Ti ostaneš sa mnom
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me
Drži svoj križ pred mojim očima koje zatvaram
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Sjaj kroz tminu i uputi me prema nebu
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Jutro neba sviće, a zemaljske sjene bježe
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
U životu, u smrti, Gospodine, ostani sa mnom
In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me
Ostani sa mnom, ostani sa mnom
Abide with me, abide with me
Beautiful hymn
As a variation I play the melody with RH on one manual, the Alto and Tenor with LH on another manual and the Bass notes on the Pedal
God Bless you man🙌🙌🙌🙌 heavenly organ music 🎶 🙏 Thanks for sharing....

Well played where is this church please?
St Martin’s Church, Salisbury, UK
William Hill organ 1869
little fast for mine but sounds nice
Clara Butt (UK) sang a different "Abide With Me"
This tune, hymn isn't known that well here in the U.S, which is a shame. I want to suggest Abide in Me to Elder Phillip, in our church, who spent a year (or more) in the U.K. after seminary, doing his musical internship. He is quite familiar with English hymns.
I grew up I the South (US) and heard this hymn in every church over several denominations my entire 78 years.
Cannot believe you said that , it was Thelonious Monks favorite . The Opening track on his album , Monks Music.
Have heard all my 80 years in churches in my life!!❤
Where were the low pedal notes to shake my subwoofer silly????
What's the tune name?
Excellent example of how to get different colours from a 2-manual instrument. I'd guess there are easily twice as many again. I was hoping for a verse with lots of suspensions (on most notes!), but this would probably not be appreciated by an accompanying choir. Lovely tempo, not dirgy.
